Characterisation of jarosite, fly ash and clay for their possible usage in the construction industry
In this paper, the mineralogical and physical characterisation of Jarosite, Clay and Fly ash was investigated. The XRD results revealed the presence of alacranite (AsS) and jarosite (K (Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6)) mineral phases in the hazardous jarosite, while clay was composed of Kaolinite (Al2Si2O5 (OH)4), Anatase (TiO2) and Quartz (SiO2). Furthermore, Fly ash contained phases Mullite (Al4.64Si1.36O9.68), Quartz (SiO2) and Calcium oxide silicate chloride (Ca2O2Si3Cl2). The XRF results confirmed that the Fly ash used is in class F (Hazardous material) . There were hazardous elements such as As and Pb in the Jarosite sample. Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) revealed differences in surfaces morphology and EDS results were in agreement with the XRF analysis. The densities of the samples were 3.13 g/cm3 , 2.67 g/cm3 and 2.21 g/cm3 for Jarosite, clay and Fly ash respectively. There was an increase in density with the increase of the percentage of Jarosite in the mixture whereas a decrease in density was noticed with the increase of Fly ash percentage in the mixture of Jarosite and clay
Antibiotic resistance profiles and relatedness of enteric bacterial pathogens isolated from HIV/AIDS patients with and without diarrhoea and their household drinking water in rural communities in Limpopo Province South Africa
Antibiotic resistance profiles and the correlation of enteric bacterial pathogens from HIV positive individuals with and without diarrhoea and their household drinking water were determined using the KirbyBauer disk diffusion and polymerase chain reaction methods respectively. The sef gene of Salmonella enteritidis was amplified with the primer pair sefA-1 and sefA-2. The fliC gene of Salmonella typhimurium was amplified with the primer pair flicA-1 and flicA-2. Heat-labile toxin (LT) primers (Lta and LTb) were used to amplify Escherichia coli isolates and VirA1 and VirA2 for the Vir A gene of Shigella dysenteriae. Results of antibiotic resistance profiles of enteric bacterial pathogens isolated from stool samples of HIV positive and negative individuals with and without diarrhea and their household drinking water showed very similar drug resistance patterns. Over 90% of all the organisms isolated from the various study cohorts showed resistance to penicillin, cloxacillin and amoxicillin. Conversely, almost all the organisms were sensitive to ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, meropenem and imipenem. About 50% of E. coli isolated from the various study cohorts showed multiple antibiotic resistance to penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, tetracycline, doxycycline and cotri-moxazole ( PR, AR, APR, ER, TR, DXTR, and TSR ) whereas less than 10% resistance was consistently reported for ofloxacin, gentamycin, meropenem cefotaxime, cefuroxime and imipenem ( OFXS, GMS, MEMS, CTXS, CXMS and IMIS ). The majority of Salmonella and Shigella isolates from all the groups were sensitive to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, amikacin, meropenem, imipenem, nalidixic acid, kanamycin, piperacillin-tazo bactam, cefuroxime, doxycyclin, cefepime and ceftazidime (CIPS, GMS, AKS, MEMS, IMIS, NAS, KNS, DXTS, CXMS, CPMS, CAZS and PTZS). For Campylobacter, over 30% of the isolates were resistant to erythromycin, ampicillin, tetracycline,cotrimoxazole and ceftazidime (ER, APR TSR and CAZR) whereas over 85% were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, gentamycin, amikacin, mero-penem, and nalidixic acid (CIPS, OFXS, GMS, AKS,MEMS and NAS). In addition to penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin and erythromycin, Aeromonas and Plesiomonas spp were more resistant to chloramphenicol, but were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, gentamycin, amikacin, meropenem, imipenem and nalidixic acid (CIPS, GMS, AKS, MEMS, IMIS and NAS). Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) experiments using targeted species genes of S. enteritidis, S. typhimurium, E. coli, Sh. dysenteriae showed that isolates from stool samples of HIV positive and HIV negative individuals with and without diarrhoea were also present in the household drinking water of the same study cohorts, suggesting that drinking water may have been the sources of the organisms in stool sample. Furthermore, by showing that the primers were able to amplify the genes in both clinical and environmental isolates, the link between the virulence of the pathogens was established
Risk profile of postnatal women and their babies attending a rural district hospital in South Africa
BackgroundMaternal and neonatal mortality remain unacceptably high and inequitably distributed in South Africa, with the postnatal period being a dangerous time for both mother and baby. The aim of this paper is to describe the risk factors for poor postnatal outcomes, including postnatal mental health disorders, in a population of postnatal women and their babies utilising rural district hospital services in Limpopo Province, with a focus on HIV. We also describe health care provider compliance with relevant guidelines.MethodsAll women discharged from the postnatal ward of the district hospital who consented to participate were enrolled. A research nurse used a structured questionnaire to collect data about sociodemographic information, pregnancy and pre-existing conditions, complications during labour and birth, pregnancy outcomes and mental health risk factors.ResultsThe questionnaire was completed for 882 women at the time of discharge. Only 354 (40.2%) of participants had completed secondary education, and 105 (11.9%) reported formal employment. Chronic hypertension was recorded in 20 women (2.3%), with an additional 49 (5.6%) developing a hypertensive disorder during pregnancy. HIV prevalence was 22.8%. 216 women (24.5%) had a mental health risk factor, with 40 reporting more than one (4.5%). Having no income, no antenatal care, having HIV and any hypertensive disorder were significantly associated with a positive mental health risk screen in multivariable analysis. There were 31 stillbirths and early neonatal deaths (3.5%), and 119 babies (13.4%) were born at a low birth weight. Stillbirth or early neonatal death was significantly associated with no antenatal care in multivariable analysis.ConclusionsWomen and babies in this study experienced multiple risk factors for poor outcomes in the postpartum period. Postnatal care should be strengthened in order to address the dominant risks to mothers and babies, including socioeconomic challenges, HIV and hypertension, and risks to mental health. Tools to identify mothers and babies at risk of postnatal complications would allow limited resources to be allocated where they are most needed
Role of community health workers in type 2 diabetes mellitus self-management: A scoping review
Background:
Globally the number of people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has risen significantly over the last few decades. Aligned to this is a growing use of community health workers (CHWs) to deliver T2DM self-management support with good clinical outcomes especially in High Income Countries (HIC). Evidence and lessons from these interventions can be useful for Low- and Middle-Income countries (LMICs) such as South Africa that are experiencing a marked increase in T2DM prevalence.
Objectives:
This study aimed to examine how CHW have been utilized to support T2DM self-management globally, their preparation for and supervision to perform their functions.
Method:
The review was guided by a stepwise approach outlined in the framework for scoping reviews developed by Arksey and O’Malley. Peer reviewed scientific and grey literature was searched using a string of keywords, selecting English full-text articles published between 2000 and 2015. Articles were selected using inclusion criteria, charted and content analyzed.
Results:
1008 studies were identified of which 54 full text articles were selected. Most (53) of the selected studies were in HIC and targeted mostly minority populations in low resource settings. CHWs were mostly deployed to provide education, support, and advocacy. Structured curriculum based education was the most frequently reported service provided by CHWs to support T2DM self-management. Support services included informational, emotional, appraisal and instrumental support. Models of CHW care included facility linked nurse-led CHW coordination, facility-linked CHW led coordination and standalone CHW interventions without facility interaction.
Conclusion:
CHWs play several roles in T2DM self-management, including structured education, ongoing support and health system advocacy. Preparing and coordinating CHWs for these roles is crucial and needs further research and strengthening
Understanding intellectual capital disclosure in online media Big Data: An exploratory case study in a university
Purpose: Intellectual capital disclosure (ICD) in universities is gaining increasing attention, especially through the adoption of innovative technologies. Online media, as a relevant source of Big Data, is shifting ICD. The purpose of this paper is to explore how Big Data generated through online media, such as websites and platforms like Facebook, can be used as rich sources of data and viable disclosure channels for ICD in a university. Design/methodology/approach: This is an exploratory case study, following the methodology in Yin (2014), that examines how online media data contributes to closing the ICD gap. The IC disclosed through different online media channels by a private university in Albania is analysed using Secundo et al.\u2019s (2016) collective intelligence framework. The online data sources include the university\u2019s website, Facebook page, periodic reports and statements outlining future goals. Findings: What the authors discover in this research is that IC is an important part of how universities operate, and IC is communicated through social media, although unintentionally. However, this only serves to highlight the importance of IC, and if researchers want to discover IC and understand how it works in an organisation, they need to include social media and a prime resource for developing that understanding. Research limitations/implications: Most importantly, the findings add to a growing consensus that ICD researchers, and researchers in other management and accounting disciplines, who traditionally rely on annual corporate social responsibility and other periodic reports, they need to change their medium of analysis because these reports no longer can be relied on to understand IC and its impact on an organisation. Originality/value: Online media tools and the advent of Big Data have created new opportunities for universities to disclose their IC information to stakeholders in a timely manner and to gain relevant insights into their impact on the society. The originality of the paper resides in the contribution of Big Data to the ICD research stream

Molecular Detection of Integrons, Colistin and β-lactamase Resistant Genes in Salmonella enterica Serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium Isolated from Chickens and Rats Inhabiting Poultry Farms
The rapid growth of multidrug-resistant Salmonella is a global public health concern. The aim of this study was to detect integrons, colistin and β-lactamase resistance genes in Salmonella enteritidis and typhimurium. A total of 63 isolates of S. enteritidis (n = 18) and S. typhimurium (n = 45) from fecal samples of layers and rats at chicken farms were screened for antibiotic resistant genes. Conventional PCR was performed for the detection of integrons (classes 1, 2, and 3), colistin (mcr-1-5) and β-lactamase (blaCTX-M, blaCTX-M-1, blaCTX-M-2, blaCTX-M-9, blaCTX-M-15, blaTEM, blaSHV, and blaOXA) resistant genes. Of these isolates, 77% and 27% of S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis harboured the mcr-4 encoded gene for colistin, respectively. The prevalence of class 1 integrons for S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis was 100% for each serovar, while for class 2 integrons of S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis it was 49% and 33% respectively, while class 3 integron genes was not detected. Our study also detected high levels of β-lactamase encoding genes (bla gene), namely blaCTX-M, blaCTX-M-1, blaCTX-M-9 and blaTEM from both S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis. This, to our knowledge, is the first report of mcr-4 resistance gene detection in Salmonella serovars in South Africa. This study also highlights the importance of controlling rats at poultry farms in order to reduce the risk of transmission of antibiotic resistance to chickens and eventually to humans
