    In this paper we present a new polynomial function for calculating the local phase transformation temperature (Ae3 ) between the austenite+ferrite and the fully austenitic phase fields during heating and cooling of steel:[Formula: see text] The dataset includes the terms of the function and the values for the polynomial coefficients for major alloying elements in steel. A short description of the approximation method used to derive and validate the coefficients has also been included.     International audienceThis paper addresses the question how hydrologists and other researchers can best contribute to the water management practice. It reviews the literature in the field of science and technology studies and research utilization and presents the results in the form of seven "rules" for researchers. These are (1) Reflect on the nature and possible roles of research; (2) Analyse the stakeholders and issues at stake; (3) Choose whom and what to serve; (4) Decide on your strategy; (5) Design the process to implement your strategy; (6) Communicate!; and (7) Consider your possibilities and limitations. Key notions in this paper are that research always involves selection and interpretation and that the selection and interpretations made in a specific case always reflect the values and preferences of those involved. Collaboration between the researchers and the other stakeholders can increase the legitimacy and utilization of the research and can prevent that the specific expertise of the researchers is lost

    Breeding value estimation for somatic cell score in South African dairy cattle

    Two fixed regression testday models were applied for variance component estimation and prediction of breeding values for somatic cell score, using testday records of the first three lactations of South African Holstein and Jersey cows. The first model (ML-model) considered the testdays of the different lactations as different traits in a multiple-trait animal model and the second analysis (RM-model) treated later lactation records as repeated measures of the first lactation. Heritabilities from the RM-model were more in the range of literature estimates compared to that of the ML-model, i.e. 0.19 + 0.003 for the Holstein breed and 0.18 + 0.003 for the Jersey breed. Rank correlations indicated that minor changes occur in the ranking of proven sires between breeding values obtained from the ML- and RM-models. Although genetic correlations between parities are not unity, the RM-model estimates more competitive variances and requires extensively less computer time to predict breeding values compared to the ML-model and are therefore recommended for breeding value estimation on a national basis. The authors note that such conflicts frequently involve poor, mainly rural people who are struggling to maintain access to the resources on which they depend for a living. The volume is concerned mainly with conceptual approaches to the issue of conflict. Given the diversity of conflict and cooperation dynamics and their relation with natural resources, the authors argue that general causal theories are problematic. Rather than aiming for grand explanations, the volume therefore is aimed to realise what Merton (1949) has termed ‘middle-range theory’

    Relative difficulty of early grade compare type word problems : learning from the case of isiXhosa

    Abstract: Word problems form an important part of the early grade mathematics curriculum in South Africa. Studies have shown that the relative difficulty of word problems differ: learners are more likely to solve certain types of word problems than others, with compare type problems being the most difficult. In order to help early grade learners understand and solve compare problems, it is important to understand the relative difficulty of different types of compare type problems and the factors that contribute to their relative difficulty. While these factors have been studied in English, less research has attended to word problems in other languages, such as isiXhosa. In this study a typology of isiXhosa compare type (difference unknown) word problem was set up. The typology included two dimensions, namely the problem situation and the comparative question. The relative difficulties of specific word problems from this typology were compared by analysing the results from an early grade mathematics assessment administered to two cohorts of Grade 1–3 isiXhosa learners in five rural Eastern Cape schools. The analysis showed that in isiXhosa, as in English, some compare type problems are easier to solve than others. Problems with ‘matching’ situations are easier to solve than problems with ‘no matching’ situations. Problems with alternatively formulated comparative questions, specifically those using -shota or kangakanani, are easier to solve than those using a more classic formulation. This study highlights the importance of understanding the ways in which African languages express mathematical ideas in order to identify and leverage affordances for teaching and learning mathematics

    Test-day models for South African dairy cattle for participation in international evaluations

    Variance components and breeding values of production traits and somatic cell score of South African Guernsey, Ayrshire, Holstein and Jersey breeds have been estimated using a multi-lactation repeatability test-day model, including tests of the first three lactations as repeated measures and fitting the permanent environmental effect across lactations. Multitrait evaluations were done for the production traits (milk, butterfat and protein) and single trait evaluations for somatic cell score. Heritability estimates were comparable with yield and somatic cell score estimates obtained by test-day models from other countries (17-24% for milk yield; 10-13% for butterfat yield; 14-19% for protein yield and 6-8% for somatic cell score). Proofs of qualifying sires were sent to the International Bull Evaluation Service (INTERBULL) for participation in the March 2005 test runs. Genetic correlations between South Africa and other participating countries, estimated by INTERBULL, compared well with those amongst the other participating countries. Trend validation tests were successful using this methodology for all traits and breeds except for somatic cell score of the Guernsey breed, due to insufficient data for this trait. South Africa can now participate in routine INTERBULL evaluations to obtain Multiple Across Country Evaluation (MACE) breeding values, using this methodology.
