    Reduction of nitrogen oxides by injection of urea in the freeboard of a pilot scale fluidized bed combustor

    The ‘thermal deNOx’ process using urea has been investigated in a 1 MW fluidized bed combustor. NOx reductions of up to 76% were obtainable by using this method. The experimental results show that urea is at least as active as NH3, which is commonly used in this application, but which is far more toxic and corrosive. Emission levels of 200 mg m−3 for NOx could be achieved by injecting the urea at a height of 2 m above the distribution plate in a molar ratio urea:NOx = 1.5. The SO2 emission value also appeared to be reduced when the urea was injected at a urea: NOx molar ratio > 4

    Regional geothermal aquifer architecture of the fluvial Lower Cretaceous Nieuwerkerk Formation – a palynological analysis

    The primary challenge for efficient geothermal doublet design and deployment is the adequate prediction of the size, shape, lateral extent and thickness (or aquifer architecture) of aquifers. In the West Netherlands Basin, fluvial Lower Cretaceous sandstone-rich successions form the main aquifers for geothermal heat exploitation. Large variations in the thickness of these successions are recognised in currently active doublet systems that cannot be explained. This creates an uncertainty in aquifer thickness prediction, which increases the uncertainty in doublet lifetime prediction as it has an impact on net aquifer volume. The goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the thickness variations and regional aquifer architecture of the Nieuwerkerk Formation geothermal aquifers. For this purpose, new palynological data were evaluated to correlate aquifers in currently active doublet systems based on their chronostratigraphic position and regional Maximum Flooding Surfaces. Based on the palynological cuttings analysis, the fluvial interval of the Nieuwerkerk Formation was subdivided into two successions: a Late Ryazanian to Early Valanginian succession and a Valanginian succession. Within these successions trends were identified in sandstone content. In combination with seismic interpretation, maps were constructed that predict aquifer thickness and their lateral extent in the basin.     A Framework for Directional and Higher-Order Reconstruction in Photoacoustic Tomography

    Photoacoustic tomography is a hybrid imaging technique that combines high optical tissue contrast with high ultrasound resolution. Direct reconstruction methods such as filtered backprojection, time reversal and least squares suffer from curved line artefacts and blurring, especially in case of limited angles or strong noise. In recent years, there has been great interest in regularised iterative methods. These methods employ prior knowledge on the image to provide higher quality reconstructions. However, easy comparisons between regularisers and their properties are limited, since many tomography implementations heavily rely on the specific regulariser chosen. To overcome this bottleneck, we present a modular reconstruction framework for photoacoustic tomography. It enables easy comparisons between regularisers with different properties, e.g. nonlinear, higher-order or directional. We solve the underlying minimisation problem with an efficient first-order primal-dual algorithm. Convergence rates are optimised by choosing an operator dependent preconditioning strategy. Our reconstruction methods are tested on challenging 2D synthetic and experimental data sets. They outperform direct reconstruction approaches for strong noise levels and limited angle measurements, offering immediate benefits in terms of acquisition time and quality.     MutS inhibits RecA-mediated strand transfer with methylated DNA substrates

    DNA mismatch repair (MMR) sensitizes human and Escherichia coli dam cells to the cytotoxic action of N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) while abrogation of such repair results in drug resistance. In DNA methylated by MNNG, MMR action is the result of MutS recognition of O(6)-methylguanine base pairs. MutS and Ada methyltransferase compete for the MNNG-induced O(6)-methylguanine residues, and MMR-induced cytotoxicity is abrogated when Ada is present at higher concentrations than normal. To test the hypothesis that MMR sensitization is due to decreased recombinational repair, we used a RecA-mediated strand exchange assay between homologous phiX174 substrate molecules, one of which was methylated with MNNG. MutS inhibited strand transfer on such substrates in a concentration-dependent manner and its inhibitory effect was enhanced by MutL. There was no effect of these proteins on RecA activity with unmethylated substrates. We quantified the number of O(6)-methylguanine residues in methylated DNA by HPLC-MS/MS and 5–10 of these residues in phiX174 DNA (5386 bp) were sufficient to block the RecA reaction in the presence of MutS and MutL. These results are consistent with a model in which methylated DNA is perceived by the cell as homeologous and prevented from recombining with homologous DNA by the MMR system

    NG-nitro L-arginine methyl ester: systemic and pulmonary haemodynamics, tissue blood flow and arteriovenous shunting in the pig

    The effects of NG-nitro-Lrarginine methyl ester (L-NAME), an inhibitor of the endothelial nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis, on systemic and pulmonary haemodynamics, and tissue as well as arteriovenous anastomotic blood flows were investigated in the anaesthetized pig, using simultaneous injections of radioactive microspheres of two different sizes (diameter: 15 and 50μm). L-NAME (1, 3 and 10 mg·kg-1) reduced systemic and pulmonary artery conductance and cardiac output, but heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure remained unchanged. L-arginine reversed the systemic and pulmonary haemodynamic changes induced by L-NAME. As detected with 15 μm microspheres, L-NAME (1 and 3 mg·kg-1) decreased tissue blood flow to and vascular conductance in the eyes, lungs, atria, kidneys, adrenals and liver. Furthermore, the difference between blood flows simultaneously measured with 15 and 50 μm microspheres, which can be equated to blood flow through arteriovenous anastomoses with a diameter between about 28 and 90 μm, was reduced by L-NAME (3 mg · kg-1) in the skin of head and gluteal regions and, as indicated by the microsphere content of the lungs, in the total systemic circulation. These results suggest that in the anaesthetized pig (i) NO is involved in the regulation of both systemic and pulmonary vascular conductance, (ii) the decrease in systemic vascular conductance is in part due to constriction of systemic arteriovenous anastomoses, and (iii) the decrease in pulmonary vascular conductance, leading to reduction of cardiac output, seems to negate the expected rise in arterial blood pressure observed, for example, in rats and rabbits following inhibition of NO-synthesis

    Development of an improvisational music therapy intervention for young adults with depressive symptoms:An intervention mapping study

    Depression is a highly prevalent and seriously impairing disorder. Evidence suggests that music therapy can decrease depression, though the music therapy that is offered is often not clearly described in studies. The purpose of this study was to develop an improvisational music therapy intervention based on insights from theory, evidence and clinical practice for young adults with depressive symptoms. The Intervention Mapping method was used and resulted in (1) a model to explain how emotion dysregulation may affect depressive symptoms using the Component Process Model (CPM) as a theoretical framework; (2) a model to clarify as to how improvisational music therapy may change depressive symptoms using synchronisation and emotional resonance; (3) a prototype Emotion-regulating Improvisational Music Therapy for Preventing Depressive symptoms (EIMT-PD); (4) a ten-session improvisational music therapy manual aimed at improving emotion regulation and reducing depressive symptoms; (5) a program implementation plan; and (6) a summary of a multiple baseline study protocol to evaluate the effectiveness and principles of EIMT-PD. EIMT-PD, using synchronisation and emotional resonance may be a promising music therapy to improve emotion regulation and, in line with our expectations, reduce depressive symptoms. More research is needed to assess its effectiveness and principles
