Repeatability and Reproducibility of Compression Strength Measurements Conducted According to ASTM E9
Ten commercial laboratories participated in an interlaboratory study to establish the repeatability and reproducibility of compression strength tests conducted according to ASTM International Standard Test Method E9. The test employed a cylindrical aluminum AA2024-T351 test specimen. Participants measured elastic modulus and 0.2 % offset yield strength, YS(0.2 % offset), using an extensometer attached to the specimen. The repeatability and reproducibility of the yield strength measurement, expressed as coefficient of variations were cv(sub r)= 0.011 and cv(sub R)= 0.020 The reproducibility of the test across the laboratories was among the best that has been reported for uniaxial tests. The reported data indicated that using diametrically opposed extensometers, instead of a single extensometer doubled the precision of the test method. Laboratories that did not lubricate the ends of the specimen measured yield stresses and elastic moduli that were smaller than those measured in laboratories that lubricated the specimen ends. A finite element analysis of the test specimen deformation for frictionless and perfect friction could not explain the discrepancy, however. The modulus measured from stress-strain data were reanalyzed using a technique that finds the optimal fit range, and applies several quality checks to the data. The error in modulus measurements from stress-strain curves generally increased as the fit range decreased to less than 40 % of the stress range
UV Induced Oxidation of Nitric Oxide
Nitric oxide in a gaseous stream is converted to nitrogen dioxide using oxidizing species generated at least in part using in situ UV radiation sources. The sources of the oxidizing species include oxygen and/or hydrogen peroxide. The oxygen may be a component of the gaseous stream or added to the gaseous stream, preferably near a UV radiation source, and is converted to ozone by the UV irradiation. The hydrogen peroxide is decomposed through a combination of vaporization and UV irradiation. The hydrogen peroxide is preferably stored at stable concentration levels, i.e., approximately 50% by volume and increased in concentration in a continuous process preceding vaporization within the flow channel of the gaseous stream and in the presence of the UV radiation sources
Understanding the Effects of Climate Change via Disturbance on Pristine Arctic Lakes—Multitrophic Level Response and Recovery to a 12-Yr, Low-Level Fertilization Experiment
Effects of climate change-driven disturbance on lake ecosystems can be subtle; indirect effects include increased nutrient loading that could impact ecosystem function. We designed a low-level fertilization experiment to mimic persistent, climate change-driven disturbances (deeper thaw, greater weathering, or thermokarst failure) delivering nutrients to arctic lakes. We measured responses of pelagic trophic levels over 12 yr in a fertilized deep lake with fish and a shallow fishless lake, compared to paired reference lakes, and monitored recovery for 6 yr. Relative to prefertilization in the deep lake, we observed a maximum pelagic response in chl a (+201%), dissolved oxygen (DO, −43%), and zooplankton biomass (+88%) during the fertilization period (2001–2012). Other responses to fertilization, such as water transparency and fish relative abundance, were delayed, but both ultimately declined. Phyto- and zooplankton biomass and community composition shifted with fertilization. The effects of fertilization were less pronounced in the paired shallow lakes, because of a natural thermokarst failure likely impacting the reference lake. In the deep lake there was (a) moderate resistance to change in ecosystem functions at all trophic levels, (b) eventual responses were often nonlinear, and (c) postfertilization recovery (return) times were most rapid at the base of the food web (2–4 yr) while higher trophic levels failed to recover after 6 yr. The timing and magnitude of responses to fertilization in these arctic lakes were similar to responses in other lakes, suggesting indirect effects of climate change that modify nutrient inputs may affect many lakes in the future
Structural basis of human LRG1 recognition by Magacizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody with therapeutic potential
The formation of new dysfunctional blood vessels is a crucial stage in the development of various conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurological disease and inflammatory disorders, as well as during tumor growth, eventually contributing to metastasis. An important factor involved in pathogenic angiogenesis is leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1), the antibody blockade of which has been shown to lead to a reduction in both choroidal neovascularization and tumor growth in mouse models. In this work, the structural interactions between the LRG1 epitope and the Fab fragment of Magacizumab, a humanized function-blocking IgG4 against LRG1, are analysed, determining its specific binding mode and the key residues involved in LRG1 recognition. Based on these structural findings, a series of mutations are suggested that could be introduced into Magacizumab to increase its affinity for LRG1, as well as a model of the entire Fab–LRG1 complex that could enlighten new strategies to enhance affinity, consequently leading towards an even more efficient therapeutic
Active Membrane Fluctuations Studied by Micropipet Aspiration
We present a detailed analysis of the micropipet experiments recently
reported in J-B. Manneville et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4356--4359 (1999),
including a derivation of the expected behaviour of the membrane tension as a
function of the areal strain in the case of an active membrane, i.e.,
containing a nonequilibrium noise source. We give a general expression, which
takes into account the effect of active centers both directly on the membrane,
and on the embedding fluid dynamics, keeping track of the coupling between the
density of active centers and the membrane curvature. The data of the
micropipet experiments are well reproduced by the new expressions. In
particular, we show that a natural choice of the parameters quantifying the
strength of the active noise explains both the large amplitude of the observed
effects and its remarkable insensitivity to the active-center density in the

Economic Relations between the EU and CIS (An Overview)
The purpose of this paper is to examine the economic aspects of EU policy towards its Eastern neighbors in the former Soviet Union. For a long period of time, this region was considered as less important for the EU, as compared to Central and Eastern Europe, which was the subject of a far-reaching economic and political integration offer materialized in two rounds of EU Eastern Enlargements (2004, 2007). However, moving the EU's geographical frontier further to the East and Southeast increased the importance of the CIS region as a potential partner of the enlarged EU. In 2004, East European and Caucasus countries were invited to participate in the European Neighborhood Policy a new EU external policy framework also addressed to the Southern Mediterranean countries. Russia has been attempting to build a strategic political and economic partnership with the EU outside the ENP framework but the content of this relationship is, in fact, very similar to the ENP. A general weakness of the ENP is that there is a lack of balance between farreaching expectations with respect to neighbors' policies and reforms, and limited and distant rewards that can potentially be offered. Thus, making this cooperation framework more effective requires a serious enhancement of the rewards using, to the extent possible, the positive experience of previous EU enlargements. The nature of contemporary economic relations in the globalized world calls for a more complex package-type approach to economic integration rather than just limiting cooperation to some narrow fields
