    Being heavily energy dependent, it is not much of a surprise that Europe pays special attention to reducing the use of fossil fuels. Each one of the ten new member states is characterized by relatively low per capita energy consumption and relatively low energy efficiency, and the share of renewables in their energy mix tends to be low, too. The paper examines the problem when policy measures create a decrease in environmental capital instead of an increase. In this case it hardly seems justified to talk about environmental protection. The authors describe a case of a Hungarian rapeseed oil mill which would not be of too much interest on its own but given that almost all similar plants went bankrupt, there are some important lessons to learn from its survival. The enterprise the authors examined aimed at establishing a micro-regional network. They completed a brown-field development to establish a small plant on the premises of a former large agricultural cooperative. By partnering with the former employees and suppliers of the sometime cooperative, they enjoyed some benefits which all the other green-field businesses focusing on fuel production could not. The project improved food security, energy security and population retention as well

    Triplet repeat DNA structures and human genetic disease: dynamic mutations from dynamic DNA.

    Fourteen genetic neurodegenerative diseases and three fragile sites have been associated with the expansion of (CTG)n (CAG)n, (CGG)n (CCG)n, or (GAA)n (TTC)n repeat tracts. Different models have been proposed for the expansion of triplet repeats, most of which presume the formation of alternative DNA structures in repeat tracts. One of the most likely structures, slipped strand DNA, may stably and reproducibly form within triplet repeat sequences. The propensity to form slipped strand DNA is proportional to the length and homogeneity of the repeat tract. The remarkable stability of slipped strand DNA may, in part, be due to loop-loop interactions facilitated by the sequence complementarity of the loops and the dynamic structure of three-way junctions formed at the loop-outs

    Kalman filter density reconstruction in ICRH discharges on ASDEX Upgrade

    Plasma density is one of the key quantities that need to be controlled in real-time as it scales directly with fusion power and, if left uncontrolled, density limits can be reached leading to a disruption. On ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), the real-time measurements are the line-integrated density, measured by the interferometers, and the average density derived from the bremsstrahlung measured by spectroscopy. For control, these measurements are used to reconstruct the radial density profile using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). However, in discharges where ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) is used, the measurements from the interferometers are corrupted and the reconstructed density is false. In this paper, the existing EKF implementation is improved, implemented and experimentally verified on AUG. The new EKF includes a new particle transport model in the prediction model RAPDENS as well as a new representation of ionization and recombination. Furthermore, an algorithm was introduced that is capable of detecting the corrupt diagnostics; this algorithm is based on the rate of change of the innovation residual. The changes to the RAPDENS observer resulted in better density reconstruction in ICRH discharges where corrupt measurement occur. The new version has been implemented on the real-time control system at AUG and functions properly in ICRH discharges.</p

    Atomic Force Microscopy of DNA, Nucleoproteins and Cellular Complexes: The Use of Functionalized Substrates

    Progress towards rapid and simple characterization of biomolecular samples by scanning probe microscopy is impeded mainly by limitations of the current approach to sample preparation. We are working on approaches based on chemical functionalization of mica. Treatment of mica with aminopropyltriethoxy silane (APTES) makes the surface positively charged (AP-mica) and able to hold DNA in place for imaging, even in water. We have shown that AP-mica is an appropriate substrate for numerous nucleoprotein complexes as well. The AFM images of the complex of DNA with RecA protein are stable and indicate a structural periodicity for this filament. AP-mica holds strongly such large DNA complexes as kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) and is an appropriate substrate for their imaging with AFM. We have further develop this approach for making hydrophobic substrates. Silylation of mica surface with hexamethyldisilazane (Me-mica) allowed us to get AFM images of chlorosomes, an antenna complex isolated from green photosynthetic bacteria. Me-mica may be converted into a positively charged substrate after treatment with water solutions of tetraethylammonium bromide or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. These activated surfaces show high activity towards binding the DNA molecules

    Excess Risk of Temporomandibular Disorder Associated With Cigarette Smoking in Young Adults

    Evidence suggests that the effect of cigarette smoking on chronic pain is stronger in younger than older adults. This case control study investigated whether age modified an effect of smoking on temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in 299 females aged 18–60 years. It also investigated the extent to which this relationship was explained by psychological profile, inflammatory response and allergy. Cases were defined using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders based on clinical examination. Psychological profile was evaluated using standardized instruments. Inflammatory response was evaluated with 11 cytokines isolated in plasma. History of allergy conditions was self-reported. Odds ratios (OR) for the effect of smoking were calculated using binary logistic regression. Stratified analyses and the likelihood ratio test examined effect modification by smoking. Compared to non-smokers, ever smokers aged <30 years had higher odds of TMD (OR =4.14, 95% CI: 1.57, 11.35) than older adults (OR =1.23, 95% CI: 0.55, 2.78) (P (effect modification) =0.038). Adjustment for psychological profile, cytokines and history of allergy-like conditions attenuated the effect by 45% to statistical non-significance. The main finding was reproduced with secondary analyses of two nationally-representative surveys of adults conducted in the U.S. and Australia
