SELEX RICH Performance and Physics Results
SELEX took data in the 1996/7 Fixed Target Run at Fermilab. The excellent
performance parameters of the SELEX RICH Detector had direct influence on the
quality of the obtained physics results.Comment: Contributed talk at the Fourth Workshop on RICH Detectors, June 5-10,

De mand-side management for energy in the region
The article deals with a promising approach to solving the problem of investment in the regional electric power industry - the application of demand-side management, the essence of which lies in proactive interaction of energy companies with customers, based on the balance of economic interests. The features of the concept and its tools are revealed, positive results of its implementation for energy market players and the region are shown, and examples of demand-side management programs are given. Institutional and mental barriers to effective implementation of demand-side management tools in power generation are analyzed. The article also proposes algorithms for implementing demand-side management programs in the region, and a mix of motivational activities that combines methods of administrative enforcement and economic stimulus for energy companies and consumers of energy and power, as well as guidelines on project funding and effectiveness evaluation
The effective action and equations of motion of curved local and global vortices: Role of the field excitations
The effective actions for both local and global curved vortices are derived,
based on the derivative expansion of the corresponding field theoretic actions
of the nonrelativistic Abelian Higgs and Goldstone models. The role of
excitations of the modulus and the phase of the scalar field and of the gauge
field (the Bogolyubov-Anderson mode) emitted and reabsorbed by vortices is
elucidated. In case of the local (gauge) magnetic vortex, they are necessary
for cancellation of the long distance divergence when using the transverse form
of the electric gauge field strength of the background field. In case of global
vortex taking them into account results in the Greiter-Wilczek-Witten form of
the effective action for the Goldstone mode. The expressions for transverse
Magnus-like force and the vortex effective mass for both local and global
vortices are found. The equations of motion of both type of vortices including
the terms due to the field excitations are obtained and solved in cases of
large and small contour displacements.Comment: 16 pages, no figures; accepted for publication in Int. Journ. Mod.

Condensation of Silica Nanoparticles on a Phospholipid Membrane
The structure of the transient layer at the interface between air and the
aqueous solution of silica nanoparticles with the size distribution of
particles that has been determined from small-angle scattering has been studied
by the X-ray reflectometry method. The reconstructed depth profile of the
polarizability of the substance indicates the presence of a structure
consisting of several layers of nanoparticles with the thickness that is more
than twice as large as the thickness of the previously described structure. The
adsorption of 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine molecules at the
hydrosol/air interface is accompanied by the condensation of anion silica
nanoparticles at the interface. This phenomenon can be qualitatively explained
by the formation of the positive surface potential due to the penetration and
accumulation of Na+ cations in the phospholipid membrane.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Thermodynamics of oxygen in CaMnO3-δ
The experimental data for equilibrium oxygen content were used in order to extract increments of partial molar thermodynamic functions of oxygen with changes of oxygen stoichiometry in calcium manganite CaMnO3-δ. It is shown that along with the oxygen exchange reaction, thermal excitation of Mn4+ cations plays an important role in equilibration of charged manganese species that appear in response to the loss of oxygen at heating. The interrelation of partial molar enthalpy and entropy of oxygen with electron and ion defect formation parameters is obtained in approximation of the point defect model. The nearly linear changes of oxygen partial molar enthalpy are shown to directly reflect thermally driven changes in concentration of Mn3+ cations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013
