Theoretical optical and x-ray spectra of liquid and solid H_2O
Theoretical optical and x-ray spectra of model structures of water and ice
are calculated using a many-body perturbation theory, Bethe-Salpeter equation
(BSE) approach implemented in the valence- and core-excitation codes AI2NBSE
and OCEAN. These codes use ab initio density functional theory wave functions
from a plane-wave, pseudopotential code, quasi-particle self energy
corrections, and a BSE treatment of particle-hole interactions. The approach
improves upon independent-particle methods through the inclusion of a complex,
energy-dependent self energy and screened particle-hole interactions to account
for inelastic losses and excitonic effects. These many-body effects are found
to be crucial for quantitative calculations of ice and water spectra
Utilization-based dynamic scheduling algorithm for wireless mesh networks
Channel access scheduling is one of the key components in the design of multihop wireless mesh networks (WMNs). This paper addresses the allocation/demand mismatch problem observed in oblivious WMN channel access scheduling schemes and proposes Utilization-Based Scheduling (UBS). UBS is a Spatial-TDMA- (STDMA-) based dynamic channel access scheduling scheme designed with the aim of increasing the application-level throughput. In UBS, each node has a weight, which is dynamically adjusted in accordance with the node's slot usage history and packet-queue occupancy. UBS is a fully distributed algorithm, where each node adjusts its own weight and makes pseudorandom transmission attempts using only the locally available information. To demonstrate the performance improvements of the dynamic weight adjustment, the performance of UBS is compared against other channel access scheduling schemes through extensive ns-2 simulations under both uniform and nonuniform traffic patterns. Bethe-Salpeter Equation Calculations of Core Excitation Spectra
We present a hybrid approach for GW/Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE)
calculations of core excitation spectra, including x-ray absorption (XAS),
electron energy loss spectra (EELS), and non-resonant inelastic x-ray
scattering (NRIXS). The method is based on {\it ab initio} wavefunctions from
the plane-wave pseudopotential code ABINIT; atomic core-level states and
projector augmented wave (PAW) transition matrix elements; the NIST core-level
BSE solver; and a many-pole GW self-energy model to account for final-state
broadening and self-energy shifts. Multiplet effects are also accounted for.
The approach is implemented using an interface dubbed OCEAN (Obtaining Core
Excitations using ABINIT and NBSE). To demonstrate the utility of the code we
present results for the K-edges in LiF as probed by XAS and NRIXS, the K-edges
of KCl as probed by XAS, the Ti L_2,3-edge in SrTiO_3 as probed by XAS, and the
Mg L_2,3-edge in MgO as probed by XAS. We compare the results to experiments
and results obtained using other theoretical approaches
Symmetry Breaking in Jetting
In the bubble-jet printing process, it has been observed that the drop that ultimately pinches off from the ink jet sometimes moves sideways rather than straight relative to the symmetry axis of the liquid jet.
We examined various mechanisms that might lead to the deflection of the ink drop. In particular, we focused on whether the liquid filament that connects the lead drop to the nozzle is capable of supporting lateral waves which might propagate from the nozzle toward the lead drop and break the symmetry at pinch-off
A Survey on Scheduling in IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode
Cataloged from PDF version of article.IEEE 802.16 standard (also known as WiMAX)
defines the wireless broadband network technology which aims
to solve the so called last mile problem via providing high
bandwidth Internet even to the rural areas for which the cable
deployment is very costly. The standard mainly focuses on the
MAC and PHY layer issues, supporting two transmission modes:
PMP (Point-to-Multipoint) and mesh modes. Mesh mode is an
optional mode developed as an extension to PMP mode and it
has the advantage of having an improving performance as more
subscribers are added to the system using multi-hop routes. In
802.16 MAC protocol, mesh mode slot allocation and reservation
mechanisms are left open which makes this topic a hot research
area. Hence, the focus of this survey will mostly be on the mesh
mode, and the proposed scheduling algorithms and performance
evaluation methods
Multisensory cortical processing and dysfunction across the neuropsychiatric spectrum
Sensory processing is affected in multiple neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders. Genetic and environmental factors guide the formation and fine-tuning of brain circuitry necessary to receive, organize, and respond to sensory input in order to behave in a meaningful and consistent manner. During certain developmental stages the brain is sensitive to intrinsic and external factors. For example, disturbed expression levels of certain risk genes during critical neurodevelopmental periods may lead to exaggerated brain plasticity processes within the sensory circuits, and sensory stimulation immediately after birth contributes to fine-tuning of these circuits. Here, the neurodevelopmental trajectory of sensory circuit development will be described and related to some example risk gene mutations that are found in neuropsychiatric disorders. Subsequently, the flow of sensory information through these circuits and the relationship to synaptic plasticity will be described. Research focusing on the combined analyses of neural circuit development and functioning are necessary to expand our understanding of sensory processing and behavioral deficits that are relevant across the neuropsychiatric spectrum
