    Leisure and Liberal Education: a Plea for Uselessness

    A liberal education informs a person in the proper use of leisure. Liberal education, as the word liberal suggests, is intimately connected with the idea of personal freedom. The central role of the liberal or liberating arts is to free us, if only for short periods of time, from mundane affairs, from the need to subordinate our lives, wills, and intellects to external demands, from the need—whether real or merely felt—to place ourselves under the sway of the marketplace in order to make a living. After all, human excellence requires more than the material ends that are procured through labor, however important such ends may be in their own right. The article discusses the challenges posed by the three divergent interests of the modern university which are teaching, research and professional training, in the age of technology. It explains that since society places a high premium on utility, even scholarly works must be dedicated to production. The article asserts that while modern university is confronted with conflicting goals, it should seek to circumvent the tension by proffering the idea that the university is free from the demands of the marketplace where usefulness is the measuring stick

    The role of personality and prior criminal offenses in the prediction of perceived helping alliance of nonsexual offending adjudicated adolescent males in residential facilities : a project based upon an independent investigation

    There has been limited research conducted looking at the variables affecting helping alliance within the therapeutic relationship. This study examined the relationship between personality and delinquency with the perceived helping alliance of non-sex offending male adolescents with their residential staff. Confidential data were collected from 161 male youth with nonsexual offenses in 6 residential facilities in a midwestern state using the Millon Adolescent Clinial Inventory (MACI), the Self Reported Delinquency Measure, and the Helping Alliance Questionnaire-II (HAQ-II). The average age of the sample (N = 161) was 16.51 years (SD = 1.23 years). The results revealed that the variables which significantly predicted helping alliance were conforming, robbery and public disorderly behavior with F (95) = 9.95 , p \u3c .001. While the MACI Conforming scale and public disorderly behavior positively predicted helping alliance, robbery was a negative predictor of helping alliance. Implications for future research are discussed

    This chapter considers what it means to be in the fullness of life, but for now I want to clarify the perspective from which the present essay is written. Although the essay follows the general contours of Thoreau\u27s thinking, it is not primarily intended as yet another contribution to the already significant body of secondary literature on Thoreau. Instead, the essay reflects my own relationship with wild nature and how the latter has shaped who I am and who I want to be. In other words, the observations and reflections contained herein are not intended as mere wissenschaftlich re-presentations of Thoreau\u27s experiences, but authentic presentations of my own experiences in the Maine woods. Unlike Thoreau, I am a third generation native not only of Maine, but of one of its more remote regions. Thus, while Thoreau\u27s travels in the Maine woods enhanced his awareness of the wildness around Concord, much the way a loud report can be said to deepen one\u27s awareness of the silence in which it is imbedded, my own travels—physical and intellectual—to Concord and beyond have enhanced my awareness of the Maine woods and of my self. For the past twenty years, I have had the good fortune to live—to dwell—three months each summer in a cabin located in the Northern part of the state

    Backward recall and benchmark effects of working memory

    Working memory was designed to explain four benchmark memory effects: the word length effect, the irrelevant speech effect, the acoustic confusion effect, and the concurrent articulation effect. However, almost all research thus far has used tests that emphasize forward recall. In four experiments, we examine whether each effect is observable when the items are recalled in reverse order. Subjects did not know which recall direction would be required until the time of test, ensuring that encoding processes would be identical for both recall directions. Contrary to predictions of both the primacy model and the feature model, the benchmark memory effect was either absent or greatly attenuated with backward recall, despite being present with forward recall. Direction of recall had no effect on the more difficult conditions (e.g., long words, similar-sounding items, items presented with irrelevant speech, and items studied with concurrent articulation). Several factors not considered by the primacy and feature models are noted, and a possible explanation within the framework of the SIMPLE model is briefly presented

    Nonprobabilistic teleportation of field state via cavity QED

    In this article we discuss a teleportation scheme of coherent states of cavity field. The experimental realization proposed makes use of cavity quatum electrodynamics involving the interaction of Rydberg atoms with micromaser and Ramsey cavities. In our scheme the Ramsey cavities and the atoms play the role of auxiliary systems used to teleport the state from a micromaser cavity to another. We show that, even if the correct atomic detection fails in the first trials, one can succeed in teleportating the cavity field state if the proper measurement occurs in a later atom

    Metabolic Profiling of IDH Mutation and Malignant Progression in Infiltrating Glioma.

    Infiltrating low grade gliomas (LGGs) are heterogeneous in their behavior and the strategies used for clinical management are highly variable. A key factor in clinical decision-making is that patients with mutations in the isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2 (IDH1/2) oncogenes are more likely to have a favorable outcome and be sensitive to treatment. Because of their relatively long overall median survival, more aggressive treatments are typically reserved for patients that have undergone malignant progression (MP) to an anaplastic glioma or secondary glioblastoma (GBM). In the current study, ex vivo metabolic profiles of image-guided tissue samples obtained from patients with newly diagnosed and recurrent LGG were investigated using proton high-resolution magic angle spinning spectroscopy (1H HR-MAS). Distinct spectral profiles were observed for lesions with IDH-mutated genotypes, between astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma histologies, as well as for tumors that had undergone MP. Levels of 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG) were correlated with increased mitotic activity, axonal disruption, vascular neoplasia, and with several brain metabolites including the choline species, glutamate, glutathione, and GABA. The information obtained in this study may be used to develop strategies for in vivo characterization of infiltrative glioma, in order to improve disease stratification and to assist in monitoring response to therapy

    Direct observation of multi-ionization and multi-fragmentation in a high-velocity cluster-atom collision

    IPMWe report the direct observation of the multi-ionization of the H21+H_{21}^+ hydrogen cluster in a single collision with a helium atom at 60 keV/u. Up to quadruple ionization of the cluster was observed and new multi-fragmentation channel were detected. Moreover, the results show two different fragmentation processes of doubly charged H−212+H-{21}^{2+} clusters: emission of an H2+H_2^+ dimer, or emission of an H−3+H-3^+ trimer after rearrangement in the cluster prior to fragmentation
