    Welding monitoring system

    This invention relates to systems for remotely monitoring automatic welding operations, and more particularly to a system wherein the welder is readily positionable, while components of the optical system remain fixed. A welder having an electrode is mounted in an enclosure containing a pair of mirrors. The electrode passes through an opening in the first mirror and a gas cup. The mirror reflects an image of a welding operation taken through the opening of the gas cup to the second mirror. The second mirror then reflects the image through a rotary coupling to a third mirror which, in turn, reflects the image to a receiving lense mounted to a second rotatable coupling. The image is then projected via a fiber optic bundle to a filter unit where selected wavelengths of light are filtered from the welding image. The filter unit is coupled to an enlarger which enlarges the image and passes it to a camera. The camera is connected to an electronic eclipser which selectively darkens the brightest portions of the image. Finally, the image is recorded by a video tape recorder and displayed by a monitor

    D3-D7 Holographic dual of a perturbed 3D CFT

    An appropriately oriented D3-D7-brane system is the holographic dual of relativistic Fermions occupying a 2+1-dimensional defect embedded in 3+1-dimensional spacetime. The Fermions interact via fields of N=4{\mathcal N}=4 Yang-Mills theory in the 3+1-dimensional bulk. Recently, using internal flux to stabilize the system in the probe N7<<N3N_7<<N_3 limit, a number of solutions which are dual to conformal field theories with Fermion content have been found. We use holographic techniques to study perturbations of a particular one of the conformal field theories by relevant operators. Generally, the response of a conformal field theory to such a perturbation grows and becomes nonperturbative at low energy scales. We shall find that a perturbation which switches on a background magnetic field BB and Fermion mass mm induces a renormalization group flow that can be studied perturbatively in the limit of small m2/Bm^2/B. We solve the leading order explicitly. We find that, for one particular value of internal flux, the system exhibits magnetic catalysis, the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry enhanced by the presence of the magnetic field. In the process, we derive formulae predicting the Debye screening length of the Fermion-antiFermion plasma at finite density and the diamagnetic moment of the ground state of the Fermion system in the presence of a magnetic field.Comment: 23 pages, two figures; typos corrected, some comments adde

    Condensate density and superfluid mass density of a dilute Bose gas near the condensation transition

    We derive, through analysis of the structure of diagrammatic perturbation theory, the scaling behavior of the condensate and superfluid mass density of a dilute Bose gas just below the condensation transition. Sufficiently below the critical temperature, TcT_c, the system is governed by the mean field (Bogoliubov) description of the particle excitations. Close to TcT_c, however, mean field breaks down and the system undergoes a second order phase transition, rather than the first order transition predicted in Bogoliubov theory. Both condensation and superfluidity occur at the same critical temperature, TcT_c and have similar scaling functions below TcT_c, but different finite size scaling at TcT_c to leading order in the system size. Through a simple self-consistent two loop calculation we derive the critical exponent for the condensate fraction, 2β0.662\beta\simeq 0.66.Comment: 4 page

    Discrete symmetries and 1/3-quantum vortices in condensates of F=2 cold atoms

    In this Letter we study discrete symmetries of mean field manifolds of condensates of F=2 cold atoms, and various unconventional quantum vortices. Discrete quaternion symmetries result in two species of spin defects that can only appear in integer vortices while {\em cyclic} symmetries are found to result in a phase shift of 2π/32\pi/3 (or 4π/34\pi/3) and therefore 1/3- (or 2/3-) quantum vortices in condensates.     Simulation evaluation of a low-altitude helicopter flight guidance system adapted for a helmet-mounted display

    A computer aiding concept for low-altitude helicopter flight was developed and evaluated in a real-time piloted simulation. The concept included an optimal control trajectory-generation algorithm based upon dynamic programming and a helmet-mounted display (HMD) presentation of a pathway-in-the-sky, a phantom aircraft, and flight-path vector/predictor guidance symbology. The trajectory-generation algorithm uses knowledge of the global mission requirements, a digital terrain map, aircraft performance capabilities, and advanced navigation information to determine a trajectory between mission way points that seeks valleys to minimize threat exposure. The pilot evaluation was conducted at NASA ARC moving base Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) by pilots representing NASA, the U.S. Army, the Air Force, and the helicopter industry. The pilots manually tracked the trajectory generated by the algorithm utilizing the HMD symbology. The pilots were able to satisfactorily perform the tracking tasks while maintaining a high degree of awareness of the outside world

    The NIF LinkOut Broker: A Web Resource to Facilitate Federated Data Integration using NCBI Identifiers

    This paper describes the NIF LinkOut Broker (NLB) that has been built as part of the Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF) project. The NLB is designed to coordinate the assembly of links to neuroscience information items (e.g., experimental data, knowledge bases, and software tools) that are (1) accessible via the Web, and (2) related to entries in the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s (NCBI’s) Entrez system. The NLB collects these links from each resource and passes them to the NCBI which incorporates them into its Entrez LinkOut service. In this way, an Entrez user looking at a specific Entrez entry can LinkOut directly to related neuroscience information. The information stored in the NLB can also be utilized in other ways. A second approach, which is operational on a pilot basis, is for the NLB Web server to create dynamically its own Web page of LinkOut links for each NCBI identifier in the NLB database. This approach can allow other resources (in addition to the NCBI Entrez) to LinkOut to related neuroscience information. The paper describes the current NLB system and discusses certain design issues that arose during its implementation
