Astrometric observations of comets and asteroids and subsequent orbital investigations
The 155-cm reflector was used for observations of comets and minor planets on 28 nights during April-October. Twenty-two of the observations refer to comets, 62 to numbered minor planets (numbered, that is, by the end of the semester: only nine of them refer to minor planets already numbered at the time of the last report), and the remainer to unnumbered minor planets. Observations were made of four new comets discovered during the semester and a fifth discovered in January. Observations of Wilson (19861), P/Tempel 2 and two other returning short-period comets are also continuing. Among the odd numbered minor planets observed were the earth-approaching objects (1685) Toro and (1980) Tezcatlipoca. The Earth approacher 1980 PA was numbered (3908)
Astrometric observations of comets and asteroids and subsequent orbital investigations
The 155-cm reflector of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory was used for observations of comets and minor planets on 35 nights during October l986- April l987. The distrubution was fairly uniform November-February, but poor weather permitted only 21 observations during March. Table I lists the 423 measurements published (in the MPCs) since the last report, two of them actually made at the very beginning of May l987. Forty-six of the observations refer to comets, 193 to numbered minor planets (numbered, that is, by the end of the semester; only 11 of them refer to minor planets already numbered at the time of the last report), and the remainder to unnumbered minor planets
THE VALUE OF CLEAN DAIRY AIR: ACCOUNTING FOR ENDOGENEITY AND SPATIALLY CORRELATED ERRORS IN A HEDONIC ANALYSES OF THE IMPACT OF ANIMAL OPERATIONS ON LOCAL PROPERTY VALUES
We study the effect of livestock operations on property values using a hedonic analysis in five Ohio townships. Unlike previous studies, we account for endogenous livestock location variables and spatially correlated errors. Results suggest failure to correct for these problems results in biased estimates of livestock impacts on property values.Land Economics/Use,
THE EFFECTS OF FARMLAND, FARMLAND PRESERVATION AND OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD AMENITIES ON PROXIMATE HOUSING VALUES: RESULTS OF A CONJOINT ANALYSIS OF HOUSING CHOICE
Using stated-preference data from a choice-based conjoint analysis instrument, we estimate willingness to pay for the presence of neighboring land that is dedicated to agricultural use (versus a developed land use) and for the preservation of surrounding farmland as permanent cropland. The data also elucidate how individuals balance the values associated with nearby agricultural land patterns with other key neighborhood characteristics such as neighborhood parks, housing density, commute times, school quality and neighborhood safety. The median respondent from a randomly chosen sample of Columbus, Ohio homeowners was willing to pay 277 annually to preserve the same amount of farmland as permanent cropland. We find provision of neighborhood parks within housing developments to be a strong substitute for farmland preservation.Land Economics/Use,

International Product Differentiation through a Country Brand: An Economic Analysis of National Branding as a Marketing Strategy for Agricultural Products
Trade policy initiatives of developed country governments are in flux. Governments’ need for new trade policy measures has arisen partly because of constraints imposed on the use of export subsidies by the Agreement on Agriculture reached as part of the Uruguay Round of General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in 1994. Further disciplines on export subsidies and other policy measures may be agreed on in the Doha Round of World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations, accentuating the need for new policy measures. While the Doha Round may not successfully reach an agreement, the current modalities show provisional agreement on the elimination of multiple forms of export subsidies. There is provisional agreement on more stringent restrictions on the use of export credit programs. Controls on exporting state trading agencies’ ability to subsidize exports are tentatively agreed (Furtan, 2005). Food aid, which can also be used to circumvent disciplines on export subsidies, is also likely to be subject to WTO disciplines.International Relations/Trade,

Sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 2 restrains egress of γδ T cells from the skin.
Maintenance of a population of IL-17-committed γδ T cells in the dermis is important in promoting tissue immunity. However, the signals facilitating γδ T cell retention within the dermis remain poorly understood. Here, we find that sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 2 (S1PR2) acts in a cell-intrinsic manner to oppose γδ T cell migration from the dermis to the skin draining lymph node (dLN). Migration of dermal γδ T cells to the dLN under steady-state conditions occurs in an S1PR1-dependent manner. S1PR1 and CD69 are reciprocally expressed on dermal γδ T cells, with loss of CD69 associated with increased S1PR1 expression and enhanced migration to the dLN. γδ T cells lacking both S1PR2 and CD69 are impaired in their maintenance within the dermis. These findings provide a mechanism for how IL-17+ γδ T cells establish residence within the dermis and identify a role for S1PR2 in restraining the egress of tissue-resident lymphocytes
A Preliminary Indication of Evolution of Type Ia Supernovae from their Risetimes
We have compared the risetime for samples of nearby and high-redshift type Ia
supernovae (SNe Ia).
The fiducial risetime of the nearby SNe Ia is 2.5+/-0.4 days longer than the
proemial risetime determined by Goldhaber (1998a,b) for high-redshift SNe
Ia from the Supernova Cosmology Project.
The statistical likelihood that the two samples have different fiducial
risetimes is high (5.8 sigma) and indicates possible evolution between the
samples of SNe Ia. We consider the likely effects of several sources of
systematic error, but none of these resolves the difference in the risetimes.
Currently, we cannot directly determine the impact of the apparent evolution
on previous determinations of cosmological parameters.Comment: Accepted by the Astronomical Journal, 11 pages, 5 figure
Phase relationship between the long-time beats of free induction decays and spin echoes in solids
Journal ArticleRecent theoretical work on the role of microscopic chaos in the dynamics and relaxation of many-body quantum systems has made several experimentally confirmed predictions about the systems of interacting nuclear spins in solids, focusing in particular on the shapes of spin echo responses measured by nuclear magnetic resonance. These predictions were based on the idea that the transverse nuclear spin decays evolve in a manner governed at long times by the slowest decaying eigenmode of the quantum system, analogous to a chaotic resonance in a classical system. The present paper extends the above investigations both theoretically and experimentally. On the theoretical side, the notion of chaotic eigenmodes is used to make predictions about the relationships between the long-time oscillation phase of the nuclear free induction decay and the amplitudes and phases of spin echoes. On the experimental side, the above predictions are tested for the nuclear spin decays of 19F in CaF2 crystals and 129Xe in frozen xenon. Good agreement between the theory and the experiment is found
