    Information systems as a field of intellectual inquiry is now approximately 50 years old. It has many achievements and extensive research to its credit and has established a large group of researchers and experts worldwide. The field has changed and changed and changed again over the last half century. The question addressed in this inaugural issue article is: Where does IS go from here? This article presents the views of six of the “fathers of the field” about its directions in the years ahead. Each coauthor presents two ideas about the future. The topics covered includes continuing support of the work of organizations, emerging technologies, new ways of communicating, expanding the ways IS performs research, expanding its vision both of what IS is and of its impact, its role as a resource, its model of the IS professional and its graduates, and its staying on top of new technologies and new areas of inquiry

    Central and peripheral clocks in Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus, L.): Daily rhythmicity of hepatic lipid metabolism and digestive genes

    Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT; Thunnus thynnus) is a highly regarded and consumed species, but farming is still in its infancy. Currently, nothing is known about the presence of circadian rhythmicity at central or peripheral tissues, or if there are daily rhythms in expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism. In order to elucidate clock gene regulation of genes of lipid metabolism in ABT, six clock genes (bmal1, clock, cry1, cry2, per1 and per2) were sequenced and 24 h expression of these genes determined in brain and liver of fish acclimated to a light:dark (L:D) photoperiod. Additionally, the daily expression of lipid metabolism and digestive enzyme genes in ABT was also determined in liver. All six clock genes displayed rhythmicity in the brain and liver, other than cry2, which did not show an acrophase in liver. In liver, all the transcription factors analysed other than srebp1 and srebp2 displayed rhythmicity, with lxr and pparα displaying diurnal expression, whereas pparγ was highly expressed at the end of the scotophase. Some of the target genes of lxr such as elovl5 and lpl also oscillated rhythmically, with acrophases during the photophase. In contrast, only three of the eight digestive enzyme genes studied displayed rhythmicity, at different times of the day, suggesting that either ABT display different feeding periods or the digestion of some nutrients (e.g. lipids) is prioritized over others. The present study showed that clock and lipid metabolism genes displayed strong daily rhythmicity in ABT brain and liver, which could be an area of considerable interest for the establishment of efficient feeding protocols in this new aquaculture species.En prensa2,04

    Thin helium film on a glass substrate

    We investigate by Monte Carlo simulations the structure, energetics and superfluid properties of thin helium-four films (up to four layers) on a glass substrate, at low temperature. The first adsorbed layer is found to be solid and "inert", i.e., atoms are localized and do not participate to quantum exchanges. Additional layers are liquid, with no clear layer separation above the second one. It is found that a single helium-three impurity resides on the outmost layer, not significantly further away from the substrate than helium-four atoms on the same layer.Comment: Six figures, submitted for publication to the Journal of Low Temperature Physic

    Treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in haemodialysis patients: a randomised clinical trial comparing paricalcitol and alfacalcidol

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common feature in patients with chronic kidney disease. Its serious clinical consequences include renal osteodystrophy, calcific uremic arteriolopathy, and vascular calcifications that increase morbidity and mortality.</p> <p>Reduced synthesis of active vitamin D contributes to secondary hyperparathyroidism. Therefore, this condition is managed with activated vitamin D. However, hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia limit the use of activated vitamin D.</p> <p>In Denmark alfacalcidol is the primary choice of vitamin D analog.</p> <p>A new vitamin D analog, paricalcitol, may be less prone to induce hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia.</p> <p>However, a randomised controlled clinical study comparing alfacalcidol and paricalcitol has never been performed.</p> <p>The primary objective of this study is to compare alfacalcidol and paricalcitol. We evaluate the suppression of the secondary hyperparathyroidism and the tendency towards hyperphosphatemia and hypercalcemia.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>This is an investigator-initiated cross-over study. Nine Danish haemodialysis units will recruit 117 patients with end stage renal failure on maintenance haemodialysis therapy.</p> <p>Patients are randomised into two treatment arms. After a wash out period of 6 weeks they receive increasing doses of alfacalcidol or paricalcitol for a period of 16 weeks and after a further wash out period of 6 weeks they receive the contrary treatment (paricalcitol or alfacalcidol) for 16 weeks.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia are associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease.</p> <p>If there is any difference in the ability of these two vitamin D analogs to decrease the secondary hyperparathyroidism without causing hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia, there may also be a difference in the risk of cardiovascular mortality depending on which vitamin D analog that are used.     Orbital glass and spin glass states of 3He-A in aerogel

    Glass states of superfluid A-like phase of 3He in aerogel induced by random orientations of aerogel strands are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In anisotropic aerogel with stretching deformation two glass phases are observed. Both phases represent the anisotropic glass of the orbital ferromagnetic vector l -- the orbital glass (OG). The phases differ by the spin structure: the spin nematic vector d can be either in the ordered spin nematic (SN) state or in the disordered spin-glass (SG) state. The first phase (OG-SN) is formed under conventional cooling from normal 3He. The second phase (OG-SG) is metastable, being obtained by cooling through the superfluid transition temperature, when large enough resonant continuous radio-frequency excitation are applied. NMR signature of different phases allows us to measure the parameter of the global anisotropy of the orbital glass induced by deformation.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to Pis'ma v ZhETF (JETP Letters
