Trends of centre-periphery polarization in Sverdlovsk region between 2008 and 2015

The significant imbalances in the economic space of a region, particularly between the centre and the periphery, present a serious challenge for economists, politicians and policy makers. Which measures are to be taken to remedy this situation? What should they be aimed at? These are the main questions to be addressed by the researchers and the government. To develop a competent policy it is essential to understand the dynamics of intra-regional variations in a long-time period. This article seeks to describe the trends in the centre-periphery polarization dynamics of a Russian region by analyzing the indicators of socio-economic development of its constituent municipalities. In their calculations the authors used the coefficient of centre-periphery variation and the methods of statistical analysis. The comparative analysis of the contribution made by peripheral and central municipalities to the key socio-economic indicators of the region in the period of 2008-2015 has shown that there is a growing centre-periphery polarization within Sverdlovsk region. The authors calculated the coefficient of centre-periphery variation for specific municipalities and the periphery in general by using the average volume indices of the retail turnover, investments in the main capital, new housing supply, the turnover of organizations and average monthly salary. The dynamics of this coefficient and that of the GRP in the given period demonstrates that while the centre-periphery gap is narrowed during the recession, it widens when the economic situation stabilizes. The scientific novelty of this research is achieved through identifying the main trends in the centre-periphery polarization within Sverdlovsk region at various stages of its socio-economic development. These research results can be applied to develop a regional policy aimed at reducing the centre-periphery differences and polarization of the regional economic space. This research was supported by RFBR, research project No.17-32-00016 ‘Responses of Peripheral Urban Districts to Changes in the Parameters of Regional Economy during the Implementation of the Local Government Reform’

Comparison of Field Theory Models of Interest Rates with Market Data

We calibrate and test various variants of field theory models of the interest rate with data from eurodollars futures. A model based on a simple psychological factor are seen to provide the best fit to the market. We make a model independent determination of the volatility function of the forward rates from market data.Comment: 9 figure

    Self-energized plasma compressor

    Get PDF
The self-energized plasma compressor is described which compresses plasma discharged from a coaxial plasma generator. The device includes a helically shaped coil which is coaxially aligned with the center axis of the coaxial plasma generator. The plasma generator creates a current through the helical coil which, in turn, generates a time varying magnetic field that creates a force which acts radially upon the plasma. The coaxial plasma generator and helical coil move the plasma under high pressure and temperature to the narrow end of the coil. Positioned adjacent to the narrow end of the coil are beads which are engaged by the plasma to be accelerated to hypervelocities for simulating meteoroids

Laser-induced thermal acoustics: simple accurate gas measurements

    Get PDF
Laser-induced thermal acoustics (LITA), an optical four-wave mixing technique, has been used for sensitive measurement of the sound speed, thermal diffusivity, acoustic damping rate, and complex susceptibility of a gas. In LITA, laser-induced acoustic waves scatter laser light into a coherent, modulated signal beam. A simple expression accurately describes the signal. Atmospheric sound speeds accurate to 0.5% and transport properties accurate to 30% have been measured in a single shot without calibration. LITA spectra have been taken of weak spectral lines of NO2 in concentrations of less than 50 parts in 10^9. Signal reflectivities up to 10^4 are estimated

Semi-classical States for Non-self-adjoint Schrodinger Operators

We prove that the spectrum of certain non-self-adjoint Schrodinger operators is unstable in the semi-classical limit. Similar results hold for a fixed operator in the high energy limit. The method involves the construction of approximate semi-classical modes of the operator by the JWKB method for energies far from the spectrum
