    Associations between family weight-based teasing, eating pathology, and psychosocial functioning among adolescent military dependents

    Weight-based teasing (WBT) by family members is commonly reported among youth and is associated with eating and mood-related psychopathology. Military dependents may be particularly vulnerable to family WBT and its sequelae due to factors associated with their parents\u27 careers, such as weight and fitness standards and an emphasis on maintaining one\u27s military appearance; however, no studies to date have examined family WBT and its associations within this population. Therefore, adolescent military dependents at-risk for adult obesity and binge-eating disorder were studied prior to entry in a weight gain prevention trial. Youth completed items from the Weight-Based Victimization Scale (to assess WBT by parents and/or siblings) and measures of psychosocial functioning, including the Beck Depression Inventory-II, The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Social Adjustment Scale.     Quantifying the impact of services liberalization in a developing country

    The authors consider how service liberalization differs from goods liberalization in terms of welfare, the level and composition of output, and factor prices within a developing economy, in this case Tunisia. Despite recent movements toward liberalization, Tunisian service sectors remain largely closed to foreign participation and are provided at high cost relative to many developing nations. The authors develop a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the Tunisian economy with multiple products and services and three trading partners. They model goods liberalization as the unilateral removal of product tariffs. Restraints on services trade involve both restrictions on cross-border supply (mode 1 in the GATS) and on foreign ownership through foreign direct investment (mode 3 in the GATS). The former are modeled as tariff-equivalent price wedges while the latter are comprised of both monopoly-rent distortions (arising from imperfect competition among domestic producers) andinefficiency costs (arising from a failure of domestic service providers to adopt least-cost practices). They find that goods-trade liberalization yields a gain in aggregate welfare and reorients production toward sectors of benchmark comparative advantage. However, a reduction of services barriers in a way that permits greater competition through foreign direct investment generates larger welfare gains. Service liberalization also requires lower adjustment costs, measured in terms of sectoral movement of workers, than does goods-trade liberalization. And it tends to increase economic activity in all sectors and raise the real returns to both capital and labor. The overall welfare gains of comprehensive service liberalization amount to more than 5 percent of initial consumption. The bulk of these gains come from opening markets for finance, business services, and telecommunications. Because these are key inputs into all sectors of the economy, their liberalization cuts costs and drives larger efficiency gains overall.     An assessment of technology alternatives for telecommunications and information management for the space exploration initiative

    On the 20th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, President Bush set forth ambitious goals for expanding human presence in the solar system. The Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) addresses these goals beginning with Space Station Freedom, followed by a permanent return to the Moon, and a manned mission to Mars. A well designed, adaptive Telecommunications, Navigation, and Information Management (TNIM) infrastructure is vital to the success of these missions. Utilizing initial projections of user requirements, a team under the direction of NASA's Office of Space Operations developed overall architectures and point designs to implement the TNIM functions for the Lunar and Mars mission scenarios. Based on these designs, an assessment of technology alternatives for the telecommunications and information management functions was performed. This technology assessment identifies technology developments necessary to meet the telecommunications and information management system requirements for SEI. Technology requirements, technology needs and alternatives, the present level of technology readiness in each area, and a schedule for development are presented

    The fast contribution of visual-proprioceptive discrepancy to reach aftereffects and proprioceptive recalibration

    Adapting reaches to altered visual feedback not only leads to motor changes, but also to shifts in perceived hand location; “proprioceptive recalibration”. These changes are robust to many task variations and can occur quite rapidly. For instance, our previous study found both motor and sensory shifts arise in as few as 6 rotated-cursor training trials. The aim of this study is to investigate one of the training signals that contribute to these rapid sensory and motor changes. We do this by removing the visuomotor error signals associated with classic visuomotor rotation training; and provide only experience with a visual-proprioceptive discrepancy for training. While a force channel constrains reach direction 30o away from the target, the cursor representing the hand unerringly moves straight to the target. The resulting visual-proprioceptive discrepancy drives significant and rapid changes in no-cursor reaches and felt hand position, again within only 6 training trials. The extent of the sensory change is unexpectedly larger following the visual-proprioceptive discrepancy training. Not surprisingly the size of the reach aftereffects is substantially smaller than following classic visuomotor rotation training. However, the time course by which both changes emerge is similar in the two training types. These results suggest that even the mere exposure to a discrepancy between felt and seen hand location is a sufficient training signal to drive robust motor and sensory plasticity.York University Librarie

    FDI in the Restructuring of the Japanese Economy

    This paper examines how inward and outward foreign direct investment (FDI) have influenced the restructuring of the Japanese economy and can be expected to continue to do so in the future. We find that outward investment has helped Japanese firms to sustain foreign market shares and contributed to the restructuring of the Japanese economy away from older industries. By shifting from exporting to affiliate production, there has been a geographical reallocation of the activities of Japanese firms, particularly those of multinational manufacturing firms. However, Japanese outward FDI is still not very large relative to the Japanese economy, despite the rapid growth since the mid-1980s, and there is still scope for significant increase when compared with the levels of most other OECD countries. Inward FDI will presumably have an even stronger impact on the restructuring of the Japanese economy. Although the stock of inward foreign direct investment is still very small, there are important changes under way. Deregulation has opened up much of the industrial and service sectors to foreign multinationals.

    Globular Clusters in NGC 1275

    We present the results of a deep photometric study of the outer halo of NGC 1275, the highly active cD galaxy at the center of the Perseus cluster. We find a modest excess of faint (R>22.5R > 22.5) starlike objects in its halo, indicating a population of old-halo globular clusters. However, the total estimated cluster population corresponds to a specific frequency of SN=4.4±1.2S_N = 4.4 \pm 1.2, no larger than that of normal giant ellipticals and three times lower than that of other central cD galaxies such as M87. We discuss several ideas for the origin of this galaxy.     Malolactic fermentation using immobilized cells of Leuconostoc oenos was investigated in order to improve this fermentation at an industrial-scale. Three strains of bacteria were investigated in some detail, and one was chosen for further work. A satisfactory growth medium for the strain of bacteria used was found to be an apple juice broth. The effect, on both the growth and malic acid bioconversion for Leuconostoc oenos strain 1070, of having 6% v/v ethanol in the growth media was tested and found to cause a longer lag phase, and be slightly beneficial, respectively. Oak chips were decided on as the immobilization media, in preference to bone char, and a synthetic, apple-juice based wine was used to determine operation parameters for a continuous culture bioreactor. Temperature, pH, ethanol concentration, SO2, malic acid concentrations, anaerobic conditions and dilution rate were investigated and it was shown that lower malic acid concentrations, and also an interaction between low pH, high temperature and high ethanol concentration affected the malic acid bioconversion adversely. Increasing the dilution rate above 0.35 h·1 caused a 30% drop in the bioconversion rate. The pH level had no effect on bioconversion if the temperature was kept at 21°C or lower. Decreasing the temperature, increasing the ethanol concentration above 10% v/v and increasing SO2 levels all caused a slight drop in bioconversion rates while strict anaerobic growth and bioconversion conditions caused an increase. The bioconversion rates ranged between 20 and 100 mg malic acid consumed/lO0ml oak chips/hour. An industrial prototype bioreactor was built and used at Villa Maria Wineries, Auckland, during the 1991 vintage and successfully processed 200 litres of Chardonnay-style wine in 2 days. The bioconversion rate was between 25 and 30 mg malic acid consumed/l00ml oak chips/hour. Informal taste tests showed satisfactory malolactic characteristics in the treated wine
