Copyright @ 2003 IEEEThe use of terminal shunt capacitance has different effects on the displacement factor and distortion factor components of the power factor. These effects are considered for nonlinear loads with ideal supply, and also where the supply impedance exists but is small compared with the load impedance. Optimization of the displacement factor is found to result in reduction of the distortion factor to a minimum value

    Data-Discriminants of Likelihood Equations

Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is a fundamental computational problem in statistics. The problem is to maximize the likelihood function with respect to given data on a statistical model. An algebraic approach to this problem is to solve a very structured parameterized polynomial system called likelihood equations. For general choices of data, the number of complex solutions to the likelihood equations is finite and called the ML-degree of the model. The only solutions to the likelihood equations that are statistically meaningful are the real/positive solutions. However, the number of real/positive solutions is not characterized by the ML-degree. We use discriminants to classify data according to the number of real/positive solutions of the likelihood equations. We call these discriminants data-discriminants (DD). We develop a probabilistic algorithm for computing DDs. Experimental results show that, for the benchmarks we have tried, the probabilistic algorithm is more efficient than the standard elimination algorithm. Based on the computational results, we discuss the real root classification problem for the 3 by 3 symmetric matrix~model.Comment: 2 table

Kufor-Rakeb syndrome is an autosomal recessive nigro-striatal-pallidal-pyramidal neurodegeneration. The onset is in the teenage years with clinical features of Parkinson’s disease plus spasticity, supranuclear upgaze paresis, and dementia. Brain scans show atrophy of the globus pallidus and pyramids and, later, widespread cerebral atrophy. We report linkage in Kufor- Rakeb syndrome to a 9 cM region of chromosome 1p36 delineated by the markers D1S436 and D1S2843, with a maximum multipoint lod score of 3.6. (J Med Genet 2001;38:680–682

A Strategy for Sustainable Development: Using Nanotechnology for Solar Energy in Buildings (Case Study Parand Town)

Solar energy is a source of free and clean energy that has no harmful environmental effects. Simple applications of new technologies such as nanotechnology are a cost-effective way of using renewable energy, which has led many industries to invest in this area. In this descriptive-analytical study the utilization of solar energy in a hot and dry region of Iran was investigated as a useful and safe resource for supplying the energy needed for the construction of Parand town, considering the available climatic potentials. The statistical population in this study was a group of inhabitants of Parand town, employees of the Tehran Construction Engineering Organization and experts in the field, from which 384 participants were selected by simple random sampling. After collecting field information through a questionnaire, the relationships between the variables of the study were tested by SPSS. The result of the study showed that the most important achievements of using nanotechnology for solar energy in view of the sustainable development of building construction from the participants' perspective were photovoltaic coating on building roofs (58.7% of the participants' responses), nano solar water heaters (57.4% of responses) and active solar cell dryers (22.1% of responses) respectively

GENOTOXIC AND CARCINOGENIC STUDIES OF NORGESTREL IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate, for the first time, the possible in vivo genotoxic and carcinogenic activity associated with exposure to norgestrel (NGT) drug through employing the very recently established and adjusted genotoxic and tumorigenic methods in Drosophila melanogaster. Methods: Two in vivo genotoxic test systems were used; one detects the somatic mutation and recombination effects (somatic mutation and recombination test [SMART] wing-spot test) and the other detects the primary DNA damage (the comet test) in the body cells of D. melanogaster. On the other hand, the warts (wts)-based SMART assay is a vital genetic examination in Drosophila used to identify and characterize cancer potential of compounds. Results: Four experimental doses of NGT were used (ranging from 0.24 ĂŽÂĽM to 16 ĂŽÂĽM). NGT was found to be non-genotoxic at all tested concentrations even at the highest dose level 16 ĂŽÂĽM and failed to increase the frequency of tumors in the somatic cells of D. melanogaster. Conclusion: Our results strengthen the hypothesis that steroidal drugs might act through a non-genotoxic carcinogen mechanism where the carcinogenic properties occur by direct stimulation of cellular proliferation through a steroid receptor-mediated mechanism. In addition, the results obtained in this research work may contribute to highlighting the importance of NGT as a potent neuroprotective antioxidant drug

Karak syndrome: a novel degenerative disorder of the basal ganglia and cerebellum

Two brothers are reported with early onset progressive cerebellar ataxia, dystonia, spasticity, and intellectual decline. • Neuroradiology showed cerebellar atrophy and features compatible with iron deposition in the putamen (including the “eye of the tiger sign”) and substantia nigra. • Diagnosis was compatible with pantothenate kinase associated neuropathy resulting from pantothenate kinase 2 mutation (PKAN due to PANK2) but linkage to PNAK2 was eliminated suggesting Karak syndrome to be a novel disorder. • The “eye of the tiger” sign has previously only been reported to occur in PKAN due to PKAN

Pasal 54 Undang-Undang Nomor 35 Tahun 2009 Tentang Narkotika mengamanahkan penyalahguna narkotika direhabilitasi. Kewenangan rehabilitasi dimiliki Badan Narkotika Nasional melalui Perpres Nomor 23 Tahun 2010 Tentang BNN. Article 54 of the Act Number 35, 2009 regarding Narcotics regulates that drug abuser to be rehabilitated. The power to do it is owned by the National Narcotic Board through the Presidential Regulation Number 23, 2010 on the National Narcotic Board. Moreover, the National Narcotic Board is also established in the Province and district Levels. Many drug abusers in Aceh Province are rehabilitated despite the fact that there are no centres for the rehabilitation services. This is juridical empirical research by law enforcement approach. The sources of data are obtained from library and field research. The data collected then analyzed and qualitatively resulting in prescriptive analytical data. The research shows that the certainty of rehabilitation law enforcement by BNP Aceh has not been going well, it has no the rehabilitation centre, there is no cooperation between the BNN and Governmental, community, religious and traditional organizations in preventing drug abuse and no rehabilitation process yet. It is suggested that the Presidential Regulation Number 23, 2010 should be revised relation to empowerment of the rehabilitation and there should be sanction against BNN, BNP, BNP Districts and make MoU between the BNN and Governmental, community, religious and traditional organizations
