CaCu_3Ti_4O_12/CaTiO_3 Composite Dielectrics: A Ba/Pb-free Ceramics with High Dielectric Constants
We have measured dielectric properties of CaCuTiO
( = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.9 and 3), and have found that
CaCuTiO (a composite of CaCuTiO and
CaTiO) exhibits a high dielectric constant of 1800 with a low dissipation
factor of 0.02 below 100 kHz from 220 to 300 K. These are comparable to (or
even better than) those of the Pb/Ba-based ceramics, which could be attributed
to a barrier layer of CaTiO on the surface of the CaCuTiO
grains. The composite dielectric ceramics reported here are environmentally

Carrier relaxation mechanisms in self-assembled (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots: Efficient P -> S Auger relaxation of electrons
We calculate the P-shell--to-S-shell decay lifetime \tau(P->S) of electrons
in lens-shaped self-assembled (In,Ga)As/GaAs dots due to Auger electron-hole
scattering within an atomistic pseudopotential-based approach. We find that
this relaxation mechanism leads to fast decay of \tau(P->S)~1-7 ps for dots of
different sizes. Our calculated Auger-type P-shell--to-S-shell decay lifetimes
\tau(P->S) compare well to data in (In,Ga)As/GaAs dots, showing that as long as
holes are present there is no need for an alternative polaron mechanism.Comment: Version published in Phys. Rev.
Phonons in the beta-tin, Imma, and sh phases of Silicon from ab initio calculations
We present a new interpretation of measured Raman frequencies of a
high-pressure structure of Silicon which was assigned previously to the
beta-tin phase. Our results show that the beta-tin->Imma->sh phase transitions
have been already indicated in this experiment which was performed before the
discovery of the Imma phase. We have calculated phonon-dispersion curves for
the beta-tin, Imma, and sh phases of silicon using the plane-wave
pseudopotential approach to the density-functional theory and the
density-functional perturbation theory within the local density approximation.
With the new assignment, the calculated phonon frequencies display an excellent
agreement with the experimental data, and can be also used to determine
precisely the transition pressure for the Imma->beta-tin phase transition. The
sh->Imma transition is accompanied by soft modes.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Self-consistent model for ambipolar tunneling in quantum-well systems
We present a self-consistent approach to describe ambipolar tunneling in
asymmetrical double quantum wells under steady-state excitation and extend the
results to the case of tunneling from a near-surface quantum well to surface
states. The results of the model compare very well with the behavior observed
in photoluminescence experiments in asymmetric double quantum
wells and in near-surface single quantum wells.Comment: 10 pages, REVTeX 3.
Discriminating among Earth composition models using geo-antineutrinos
It has been estimated that the entire Earth generates heat corresponding to
about 40 TW (equivalent to 10,000 nuclear power plants) which is considered to
originate mainly from the radioactive decay of elements like U, Th and K,
deposited in the crust and mantle of the Earth. Radioactivity of these elements
produce not only heat but also antineutrinos (called geo-antineutrinos) which
can be observed by terrestrial detectors. We investigate the possibility of
discriminating among Earth composition models predicting different total
radiogenic heat generation, by observing such geo-antineutrinos at Kamioka and
Gran Sasso, assuming KamLAND and Borexino (type) detectors, respectively, at
these places. By simulating the future geo-antineutrino data as well as reactor
antineutrino background contributions, we try to establish to which extent we
can discriminate among Earth composition models for given exposures (in units
of kt yr) at these two sites on our planet. We use also information on
neutrino mixing parameters coming from solar neutrino data as well as KamLAND
reactor antineutrino data, in order to estimate the number of geo-antineutrino

Production of -mesons in pp and pn reactions
We investigate the cross section for the reaction near
threshold and at medium energies. An effective Lagrangian approach with
one-pion exchange is applied to analyze different contributions to the cross
section for different isospin channels. The Reggeon exchange mechanism is also
considered. The results are used to calculate the contribution of the
meson to the cross sections and invariant mass distributions of the
reactions and . It is found that the
experimental observation of mesons in the reaction is much more promising than the observation of mesons in the

Strangeness production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions
In these lectures we discuss the investigation of the strange meson
production in proton-proton () and in proton-nucleus () reactions
within an effective Lagrangian model. The kaon production proceeds mainly via
the excitations of (1650), (1710), and (1720) resonant
intermediate nucleonic states, in the collision of two initial state nucleons.
Therefore, the strangeness production is expected to provide information about
the resonances lying at higher excitation energies. For beam energies very
close to the kaon production threshold the hyperon-proton final state
interaction effects are quite important. Thus, these studies provide a check on
the models of hyperon-nucleon interactions. The in-medium production of kaons
show strong sensitivity to the self energies of the intermediate mesons.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Talk presented in the workshop on Hadron

Elasticity, strength, and refractive index of argon at high pressures
High-pressure Brillouin spectroscopy of polycrystalline argon, measured using two scattering angles (180° and 70°), determines the isotropic elastic moduli, shear strength, equation of state, and refractive index of face-centered-cubic argon from 1.3 to 30 GPa at room temperature. The index of refraction n=1.33-1.67 over this pressure range. An Eulerian finite-strain analysis (Birch-Murnaghan equation of state) yields an isothermal bulk modulus and pressure derivative KT =15.1 (±1.1) GPa and K′T =5.4 (±0.3) at 2 GPa. The resulting equation of state agrees well with previous x-ray diffraction measurements, illustrating the suitability of high-pressure Brillouin scattering for characterizing the elasticity and strength of polycrystalline materials.5 page(s
Multisensory and Motor Representations in Rat Oral Somatosensory Cortex
Abstract In mammals, a complex array of oral sensors assess the taste, temperature and haptic properties of food. Although the representation of taste has been extensively studied in the gustatory cortex, it is unclear how the somatosensory cortex encodes information about the properties of oral stimuli. Moreover, it is poorly understood how different oral sensory modalities are integrated and how sensory responses are translated into oral motor actions. To investigate whether oral somatosensory cortex processes food-related sensations and movements, we performed in vivo whole-cell recordings and motor mapping experiments in rats. Neurons in oral somatosensory cortex showed robust post-synaptic and sparse action potential responses to air puffs. Membrane potential showed that cold water evoked larger responses than room temperature or hot water. Most neurons showed no clear tuning of responses to bitter, sweet and neutral gustatory stimuli. Finally, motor mapping experiments with histological verification revealed an initiation of movements related to food consumption behavior, such as jaw opening and tongue protrusions. We conclude that somatosensory cortex: (i) provides a representation of the temperature of oral stimuli, (ii) does not systematically encode taste information and (iii) influences orofacial movements related to food consummatory behavior
