    Curl-free positive definite form of time-harmonic Maxwells equations well-suitable for iterative numerical solving

    A new form of time-harmonic Maxwells equations is developed and proposed for numerical modeling. It is written for the magnetic field strength, electric displacement, vector potential and the scalar potential. There are several attractive features of this form. The first one is that the differential operator acting on these quantities is positive. The second is absence of curl operators among the leading order differential operators. The Laplacian stands for the leading order operator in the equations for the magnetic field strength, vector potential and the scalar potential, while the gradient of divergence stands for the electric displacement. The third feature is absence of space varied coefficients in the leading order differential operators that provides diagonal domination of the resulting matrix of the discretized equations. A simple example is given to demonstrate the applicability of this new form of time-harmonic Maxwells equations.Comment: Invited talk for 47th Annual EPS Plasma Conferenc

    Scaling Analysis of Magnetic Filed Tuned Phase Transitions in One-Dimensional Josephson Junction Arrays

    We have studied experimentally the magnetic field-induced superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition in one-dimensional arrays of small Josephson junctions. The zero bias resistance was found to display a drastic change upon application of a small magnetic field; this result was analyzed in context of the superfluid-insulator transition in one dimension. A scaling analysis suggests a power law dependence of the correlation length instead of an exponential one. The dynamical exponents zz were determined to be close to 1, and the correlation length critical exponents were also found to be about 0.3 and 0.6 in the two groups of measured samples.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Troppo - A Python framework for the reconstruction of context-specific metabolic models

    The surge in high-throughput technology availability for molecular biology has enabled the development of powerful predictive tools for use in many applications, including (but not limited to) the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases such as cancer. Genome-scale metabolic models have shown some promise in clearing a path towards precise and personalized medicine, although some challenges still persist. The integration of omics data and subsequent creation of context-specific models for specific cells/tissues still poses a significant hurdle, and most current tools for this purpose have been implemented using proprietary software. Here, we present a new software tool developed in Python, troppo - Tissue-specific RecOnstruction and Phenotype Prediction using Omics data, implementing a large variety of context-specific reconstruction algorithms.     On magnetospheric electron impact ionisation and dynamics in Titan's ram-side and polar ionosphere – a Cassini case study

    We present data from the sixth Cassini flyby of Titan (T5), showing that the magnetosphere of Saturn strongly interacts with the moon's ionosphere and exo-ionosphere. A simple electron ionisation model provides a reasonable agreement with the altitude structure of the ionosphere. Furthermore, we suggest that the dense and cold exo-ionosphere (from the exobase at 1430 km and outward to several Titan radii from the surface) can be explained by magnetospheric forcing and other transport processes whereas exospheric ionisation by impacting low energy electrons seems to play a minor role

    Developmental changes in mesenteric artery reactivity in embryonic and newly hatched chicks

    At birth, the intestine becomes the sole site for nutrient absorption requiring a dramatic increase in blood flow. The vascular changes accompanying this transition have been partly characterized in mammals. We investigated, using wire myography, the developmental changes in chick mesenteric artery (MA) reactivity. Rings of the MA from 15-day (E15) and 19-day (E19) chicken embryos (total incubation 21 days) as well as non-fed 0–3-h-old (NH3h) and first-fed 1-day-old (NH1d) newly hatched chicks contracted in response to KCl, norepinephrine (NE), U46619, and endothelin (ET)-1 and relaxed in response to acetylcholine (ACh), sodium nitroprusside (SNP), and forskolin indicating the presence of electro- and pharmaco-mechanical coupling as well as cGMP- and cAMP-mediated relaxation. In ovo development and transition to ex ovo life was accompanied by alterations in the response of the MAs, but a different developmental trajectory was observed for each reactivity pathway tested. Thus, the contractile efficacy of KCl underwent a linear increase (E15 < E19 < NH3h < NH1d). The efficacy of NE and U46619 increased in ovo, but not ex ovo (E15 < E19 = NH3h = NH1d) and the efficacy of ET-1 peaked at E19 (E15 < E19 > NH3h = NH1d). The relaxations elicited by ACh (endothelium-dependent), SNP, and forskolin did not undergo significant developmental changes. In conclusion, the ability of chick MAs to constrict in response to pharmacological stimuli increases during the embryonic period, but no dramatic changes are induced by hatching or the first feeding. Maturation of vasodilator mechanisms precedes that of vasoconstrictor mechanisms. Alterations of the delicate balance between vasoconstrictors and vasodilators may play an important role in perinatal intestinal diseases

    Polymorphism of the FABP2 gene: a population frequency analysis and an association study with cardiovascular risk markers in Argentina

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The FABP2 gene encodes for the intestinal FABP (IFABP) protein, which is expressed only in intestinal enterocytes. A polymorphism at codon 54 in exon 2 of the FABP2 gene exchanges an Alanine (Ala), in the small helical region of the protein, for Threonine (Thr). Given the potential physiological role of the Ala54Thr FABP2 polymorphism, we assess in this study the local population frequency and analyze possible associations with five selected markers, i.e. glycemia, total cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, and high Cardiovascular Risk Index (CVR index).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 86 men and 116 women. DNA was extracted from a blood drop for genotype analysis. Allele frequencies were calculated by direct counting. Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium was evaluated using a Chi-square goodness of fit test.</p> <p>For the polymorphism association analysis, five markers were selected, i.e. blood pressure, Framingham Risk Index, total cholesterol, BMI, and glycemia.</p> <p>For each marker, the Odds Ratio (OR) was calculated by an online statistic tool.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our results reveal a similar population polymorphism frequency as in previous European studies, with <b>q = 0.277 </b>(95% confidence limits 0.234–0.323). No significant association was found with any of the tested markers in the context of our Argentine nutritional and cultural habits. We did, however, observe a tendency for increased Cholesterol and high BMI in Thr54 carriers.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first study to look at the population frequency of the Thr54 allele in Argentina. The obtained result does not differ from previously reported frequencies in European populations. Moreover, we found no association between the Thr54 allele and any of the five selected markers. The observed tendency to increased total cholesterol and elevated BMI in Thr54 carriers, even though not significant for p < 0.1 could be worth of further investigation to establish whether the Thr54 variant should be taken into consideration in cardiovascular prevention strategies.</p
