Tempus CaSA Project – A Sustainable Tool for Knowledge and Innovation Transfer in Animal Sciences

    Get PDF
Although regulated by law and other policies knowledge transfer in animal sciences (zootechnics) is rather limited after students’ graduation from the Faculty of Agriculture. There is a lack of courses for professional development of teachers from agricultural middle schools, including those teaching subjects in animal sciences. There is as well a need of permanent improvement and upgrading of courses and trainings created for advisors in agricultural advisory services. The TEMPUS CaSA project objective is to contribute to the improvement of agricultural education to meet the needs of Serbian society. CaSA foresees: upgrading quality and availability of vocational agricultural education by strengthening professional and pedagogical competences of educators (University teachers, secondary school teachers, advisors) and creation of the repository for courses and additional contents important for agricultural education. Improvement of agricultural education will be achieved by introducing trainings in active teaching learning (ATL), communication skills, e-learning, together with newest knowledge emerging from research activities incorporated in vocational courses. Creation of the National Repository for Agricultural Education (NaRA), will enable networking of all stakeholders in agricultural education and assure sustainability. In addition, among 13 project partners, the Ministry of education is a compulsory partner for Structural Measures TEMPUS projects. This is important for recognition of the National repository by relevant state authorities. Online courses and teaching material, live stream trainings, results from the research projects, and different data bases will be available in NaRA after project life-time

Dirofilariosis and Leishmaniasis in the Northern Region of Serbia

    Get PDF
Research in the field of vector borne diseases and zoonozes became a topic of interest in Serbia, during the last decade. Climate changes as well as higher frequency of human and animal movement and travel, especially of dogs, is rising a threat of dirofilariosis and leismaniasis. The presence of native mosquito and sandfly vectors has already been confirmed in the country and some invasive/previously not detected were found. Dirofilariosis and leishmaniasis, which are found more or less often in dogs, cause clinical symptoms which are not obvious and therefore they represent a danger for public health with dogs acting as reservoirs of the infection

Distribution of Anopheles daciae and other Anopheles maculipennis complex species in Serbia

Malaria is one of the most severe health problems facing the world today. Until the mid-twentieth century, Europe was an endemic area of malaria, with the Balkan countries being heavily infested. Sibling species belonging to the Anopheles maculipennis complex are well-known as effective vectors of Plasmodium in Europe. A vast number of human malaria cases in the past in the former Yugoslavia territory have stressed the significance of An. maculipennis complex species as primary and secondary vectors. Therefore, the present study evaluates the species composition, geographic distribution and abundance of these malaria vector species. Mosquitoes were collected in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina and analysed by PCRRFLP, multiplex PCR and sequencing of the ITS2 intron of genomic rDNA. Four sibling species of the An. Maculipennis complex were identified. Both larvae and adults of the recently described species An. daciae were identified for the first time in Serbia. In 250 larval samples, 109 (44%) An. messeae, 90 (36%) An. maculipennis s.s., 33 (13%) An. daciae and 18 (7%) An. atroparvus were identified. In adult collections, 81 (47%) An. messeae, 55 (32%) An. daciae, 33 (19%) An. maculipennis s.s., and 3 (2%) An. atroparvus were recorded. The most abundant species in Vojvodina was An. messeae, whereas An. atroparvus was confirmed a rare species in all parts. Since this species is a potentially, highly competent malarial vector, low population density could be crucial to prevent a new establishment of endemic malaria transmission in Serbia

NaRA - nacionalni repozitorijum za obrazovanje u oblasti poljoprivrede – rezultat CaSA projekta

Through the realisation of CaSA TEMPUS project university teachers from 5 Serbian Universities were trained in active teaching learning methodology, academic skills and eLearning. They created 63 courses for knowledge refreshment, professional improvement, and in-service training of teachers of secondary agricultural schools and advisors in Extension services. In the virtual environment a platform for the National Repository for Agricultural Education - NaRA (http://arhiva.nara.ac.rs) is set. Courses: classic, blended and on-line (e-learning) are available on the NaRA portal. It also includes scientific and professional journals, defended doctoral theses (PDF), papers published in Proceedings of the symposia organized by Faculties participating in this TEMPUS project, and the results of projects and brochure funded by responsible Ministries. NaRA represents a unique online learning and information platform in the region.

Emerging trends in the epidemiology of West Nile and Usutu virus infections in Southern Europe

    Get PDF
The epidemiology of West Nile (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) has changed dramatically over the past two decades. Since 1999, there have been regular reports of WNV outbreaks and the virus has expanded its area of circulation in many Southern European countries. After emerging in Italy in 1996, USUV has spread to other countries causing mortality in several bird species. In 2009, USUV seroconversion in horses was reported in Italy. Co-circulation of both viruses was detected in humans, horses and birds. The main vector of WNV and USUV in Europe is Culex pipiens, however, both viruses were found in native Culex mosquito species (Cx. modestus, Cx. perexiguus). Experimental competence to transmit the WNV was also proven for native and invasive mosquitoes of Aedes and Culex genera (Ae. albopictus, Ae. detritus, Cx. torrentium). Recently, Ae. albopictus and Ae. japonicus naturally-infected with USUV were reported. While neuroinvasive human WNV infections are well-documented, USUV infections are sporadically detected. However, there is increasing evidence of a role of USUV in human disease. Seroepidemiological studies showed that USUV circulation is more common than WNV in some endemic regions. Recent data showed that WNV strains detected in humans, horses, birds, and mosquitoes mainly belong to lineage 2. In addition to European USUV lineages, some reports indicate the presence of African USUV lineages as well. The trends in WNV/USUV range and vector expansion are likely to continue in future years. This mini-review provides an update on the epidemiology of WNV and USUV infections in Southern Europe within a multidisciplinary "One Health" context

A diagrammatic calculus for categorical quantum protocols

We propose an explicit realisation of a category with enough structure to check validity of certain class of quantum protocols. This category is based on the category of 1-dimensional cobordisms. A coherence result proves that it fulfils all desired conditions.Comment: 24 pages + appendix; continuation and application of arXiv:2001.0973
