    The Broad-Band Spectrum and Infrared Variability of the Magnetar AXP 1E1048.1-5937

    We present photometry of the Anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E1048.1-5937 in the infrared and optical, taken at Magellan and the VLT. The object is detected in the I, J and Ks bands under excellent conditions. We find that the source has varied greatly in its infrared brightness and present these new magnitudes. No correlation is found between the infrared flux and spin-down rate, but the infrared flux and X-ray flux may be anti-correlated. Assuming nominal reddening values, the resultant spectral energy distribution is found to be inconsistent with the only other AXP SED available (for 4U0142+61). We consider the effect of the uncertainty in the reddening to the source on its SED. We find that although both the X-ray and infrared fluxes have varied greatly for this source, the most recent flux ratio is remarkably consistent with what is is found for other AXPs.     GABA-B receptor function in healthy volunteers, a pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic study of two doses of baclofen compared to placebo

    AIMS AND HYPOTHESIS To assess the subjective and objective effects of baclofen on brain function in healthy volunteers. BACKGROUND Recent evidence suggests baclofen, a γ-aminobutyric acid type B (GABA-B) receptor agonist, reduces alcohol consumption and craving and promotes abstinence in alcoholics. However, characterisation of the GABA-B receptor system in clinical addiction is limited, and it is unclear why some patients require, or tolerate, higher doses to treat alcoholism. This study assesses the effects of baclofen on brain function in healthy volunteers to inform future studies investigating the sensitivity of GABA-B receptors in alcohol addiction. METHODS Eight healthy male volunteers completed a double blind randomised 3-way cross over study, receiving oral placebo (vitamin C 100mg), 10mg and 60mg baclofen. Subjective and objective measurements were taken at baseline (before medication) and at +30mins, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 hours after dosing. Objective measures included blood plasma samples, heart rate and blood pressure. Subjective measures included; the Subjective High Assessment Questionnaire (SHAS), visual analogue scales for sleepy, relaxed, tense and alert and a motor coordination task (zig-zag task). Pharmacokinetic data was obtained using liquid chromatography mass-spectrometry (LC-MS) to measure plasma baclofen concentrations. RESULTS 60mg Baclofen showed changes in subjective measures peaking at 2 hours post dosing compared with placebo, including a significant increase (p<0.05) in total SHAS scores with individual items, including feeling ‘drunk or intoxicated’, effects of alcohol and ‘muddled or confused’ particular affected.. Systolic blood pressure was significantly increased (p<0.05) at the 2 hours post 60mg dose. For both 10mg and 60mg baclofen, peak plasma concentration was achieved 60 minutes post dose. Pharmacokinetic data will be presented. There were no significant changes in these measures between 10mg Baclofen and placebo. CONCLUSIONS The objective and subjective measures used in this study are able to differentiate between placebo and 60mg baclofen. These findings will inform further research investigating the sensitivity of GABA-B receptors in alcohol addiction

    We have built a VME module using H1’s ADC and BaBar TDC interfaced to H1’s 29K processor. It is used to monitor SpaCal trigger, energy sums and trigger elements, by reading up to 130Kevents/s. The timing resolution is found to be surprisingly good ( »1ns) for energy sum signals. The performances under various beam conditions are shown, including a first study of the “hotspot” counters designed as a veto against e-beam background

    Religiosity and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Latina Adolescents: Trends from 1995 to 2008

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine trends in the influence of religiosity on sexual activity of Latina adolescents in the United States from 1995 to 2008 and to determine if differences existed between the Mexican American and other Latina groups. Methods: The sample comprised the subset of unmarried, 15–21-year-old (mean 17 years) Latina female respondents in the 1995 (n=267), 2002 (n=306), and 2006–2008 (n=400) National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) datasets. Associations between religiosity (importance of religion and service attendance) and history of ever having sex, number of sex partners, and age of sexual debut were investigated. Results: Less than one half of Latinas in 1995 (44%) and in 2006–2008 (44%) reported that religion was very important to them, whereas in 2002, 50% reported it was important. Only in 1995 did Latinas who viewed religion as very important have a significantly lower level of sexual initiation. In 1995 and in 2006–2008, Latinas who held religion as very important had significantly fewer partners. In all three cohorts, the higher religious importance group had higher virgin survival rates. Across cohorts, approximately one third of respondents reported frequent religious attendance. In all cohorts, frequent attenders were less likely to have had sex, had fewer partners, and had older age at sexual debut. The survival rate as virgins for Mexican origin Latinas was higher in 1995 and 2002 compared to non-Mexican Latinas but was almost the same in 2006–2008. Conclusions: Religiosity had a protective association with sexual activity among Latina adolescents. The association of importance of religion with sexual activity has diminished from 1995 to 2008, however, whereas the importance of service attendance has remained stable. The influence of religion was more apparent among the Latinas of Mexican origin, but this greater influence also diminished by 2006–2008

    Expanding hot flow in the black hole binary SWIFT J1753.5-0127: evidence from optical timing

    We describe the evolution of optical and X-ray temporal characteristics during the outburst decline of the black hole X-ray binary SWIFT J1753.5-0127. The optical/X-ray cross-correlation function demonstrates a single positive correlation at the outburst peak, then it has multiple dips and peaks during the decline stage, which are then replaced by the precognition dip plus peak structure in the outburst tail. Power spectral densities and phase lags show a complex evolution, revealing the presence of intrinsically connected optical and X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations. For the first time, we quantitatively explain the evolution of these timing properties during the entire outburst within one model, the essence of which is the expansion of the hot accretion flow towards the tail of the outburst. The pivoting of the spectrum produced by synchrotron Comptonization in the hot flow is responsible for the appearance of the anti-correlation with the X-rays and for the optical quasi-periodic oscillations. Our model reproduces well the cross-correlation and phase lag spectrum during the decline stage, which could not be understood with any model proposed before.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS submitte

    Effects of fencing on forage biomass and quality through livestock exclusion from a protected area in the southern Kalahari

    The substitution of wild herbivores by livestock has led to substantial degradation of many southern African grazing systems. As a result, bush and shrub encroachment has led to a reduction of grasslands, invasion of thorn shrubs, reduced carrying capacity of range land, and desertification. These changes often raise socio-economic challenges for rural communities in arid and semi-arid regions, as previously profitable areas may become no longer economically viable. This study aims to compare biomass and key chemical characteristics of grassy vegetation between sites experiencing low vs. high grazing pressures. Furthermore, we estimate the recovery time needed for pasture in heavily grazed areas to reach properties of similar sites under low grazing pressure. In heavily grazed areas, grass was of higher quality than in areas with low grazing pressure, as the remaining or re-growing grass contains higher percentages of protein and lower concentrations of fiber. However, as heavy grazing led to reduced grass biomass, the absolute amount of protein available per unit area was lower in areas with high compared to areas with low grazing pressure. Furthermore, at the heavily grazed area we recorded a high proportion of unpalatable plant species. The exclusion of livestock through fencing resulted in a rapid increase of grass biomass and therefore higher amounts of fibre, protein and hemicellulose contents per unit area after one wet season, whereas the chemical concentrations of plant compounds changed remarkably little after elimination of livestock grazing pressure. In areas where cattle substitute wild-ranging herbivores we recommend livestock managers consider transitioning to sustainable grazing systems through grazing rotation, diversification of herbivore species, and reduction in stocking rates. This would secure sustainable livestock-based livelihoods while avoiding permanent rangeland degradation due to bush encroachment and desertification

    A computational and psychophysical study of motion induced distortions of perceived location.

    In this thesis I begin by extending previous psychophysical research on the effects of visual motion on spatial localisation. In particular, I measured the perceived spatial shift of briefly presented static objects adjacent to a moving stimulus. It was found that the timing of the presentation of static objects with respect to nearby motion was crucial. I also found a decrease of this motion induced spatial displacement with the increasing distance of static objects from motion, suggesting a local effect of motion. The induced perceptual shift could also be reduced by introducing transient stimuli (flickering dots) in the background of the display. The next stage was to construct a computational model to provide a mechanism that could facilitate such shifts in position. To motivate our combined model of motion computation and spatial representation we considered what functions could be attributed to V1 cells on the basis of their contrast sensitivity functions. I found that functions based on sums of differential of Gaussian operators could provide good fits to previously found V1 data. The properties of V1 cells as derivatives of Gaussian kernel filters on an image were used to build a spatial representation, where position is represented in the weighting of these filter outputs, rather than in a one-to-one isomorphic representation of the scene. This image representation can also be used along with temporal derivatives to calculate motion using the Multi-Channel Gradient Model scheme (Johnston et al, 1992). 1 demonstrate how this framework can incorporate motion signals to produce "in place" shifts of visual location. Finally a combined model of motion and spatial location is outlined and evaluated in relation to the psychophysical data

    Diverse locations and a long history: historical context for urban leopards (Panthera pardus) in the early Anthropocene from Seoul, Korea

    While the urban landscapes of the early Anthropocene may appear hostile to large carnivores, humans and leopards (Panthera pardus) are known to co-inhabit major urban centres like Mumbai (India), Nairobi (Kenya) and Johannesburg (South Africa). We provide evidence that the presence of leopards in urban landscapes is not, however, a new phenomenon and has occurred repeatedly over the early history of the Anthropocene. Using records of Amur leopards (P. p. orientalis) in Seoul, Korea, at the end of the 19th century, a capital city and major urban centre with a high human population density, we explore socio-cultural, political and ecological factors that may have facilitated human-leopard co-occurrence in an urban landscape and the factors that eventually led to the leopards' extirpation. We suggest that, in the absence of unsustainable levels of persecution by humans, leopards are able to persist in urban landscapes which contain small patches of dense vegetation and have sufficient alternative food supplies. In light of the continued expansion of urban landscapes in the 21st century and increasing conservation focus on the presence of large carnivore populations there, this paper provides historical context to human co-existence with leopards in urban landscapes during the Anthropocene – and what we can learn from it for the future
