Postcolonial Trajectories: towards a Re-definition of Italianity

Although its short duration, Italian colonialism left traces both in literature and in the core structure of Italian society. The Italian colonies in Africa were home to many male and female writers who, through their texts, reopened the debate around the Italian imperialist expansion. Postcolonial texts contribute to the creation of a new vision of Italy and a new perception of Italianity, reflecting through it the image of a new and mestizo people./n Seppur di breve durata, il colonialismo italiano ha lasciato tracce sia in letteratura che nella struttura stessa della società italiana.

    Get PDF

Political relations between Italy and Somalia have always aroused attention because of their common colonial past. The diasporic movements between the two countries, divided at different times, have been the protagonists of the twentieth century. In particular, the Somali diaspora assumes a central role within the Italian literature of the last century, thanks to the autobiographical productions of authors such as Shirin Ramzanali Fazel, Igiaba Scego and Maryam Maio. The diasporic voices establish a relationship between them, offering a more complete vision of this sensitive historical period

Wearable Brain-Computer Interface Instrumentation for Robot-Based Rehabilitation by Augmented Reality

    Get PDF
An instrument for remote control of the robot by wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) is proposed for rehabilitating children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Augmented reality (AR) glasses generate flickering stimuli, and a single-channel electroencephalographic BCI detects the elicited steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). This allows benefiting from the SSVEP robustness by leaving available the view of robot movements. Together with the lack of training, a single channel maximizes the device's wearability, fundamental for the acceptance by ADHD children. Effectively controlling the movements of a robot through a new channel enhances rehabilitation engagement and effectiveness. A case study at an accredited rehabilitation center on ten healthy adult subjects highlighted an average accuracy higher than 83%, with information transfer rate (ITR) up to 39 b/min. Preliminary further tests on four ADHD patients between six- and eight-years old provided highly positive feedback on device acceptance and attentional performance

Reuse and valorisation of hemp fibres and rice husk particles for fire resistant fibreboards and particleboards

    Get PDF
The present manuscript deals with the reuse and valorisation of agricultural wastes and by-products (namely, hemp fibres and rice husk particles) to produce fire retardant fibreboards and particleboards for applications in biobuilding. Since fire retardancy is one of the most important challenges, a detailed study on the thermal and flame retardant properties of the above materials assembled using starch as the binder and different ammonium dihydrogen phosphate contents as fire retardant agents, is proposed. The combustion properties have been investigated in developing fire conditions, employing a radiating heat flux of 35 kW/m2 generated by a cone calorimeter. An optimised formulation able to make both fibreboards and particleboards not ignitable has been found and is predicted to be “A2/B” class in the European fire classification for building products. The resultant materials have proven to undergo pyrolysis and not to burn, favouring the formation of a dense and consistent final residue

Influence of Mechanical Properties on the Piezoelectric Response of UV-Cured Composite Films Containing Different ZnO Morphologies

ZnO flower-like (ZFL) and needle (ZLN) structures were synthesized and embedded into UV-curable acrylic resin (EB), with the aim to study the effect of filler loading on the piezoelectric properties of the resulting composite films. The composites showed uniform dispersion of fillers within the polymer matrix. However, by increasing the filler amount, the number of aggregates increased, and ZnO fillers appeared not to be perfectly embedded in polymer film, indicating poor interaction with acrylic resin. The filler content increase caused an increase in glass transition temperature (Tg) and a decrease in storage modulus in the glassy state. In particular, compared with pure UV-cured EB (Tg = 50 °C), 10 wt.% ZFL and ZLN presented Tg values of 68 and 77 °C, respectively. The piezoelectric response generated by the polymer composites was good when measured at 19 Hz as a function of the acceleration; the RMS output voltages achieved at 5 g were 4.94 and 1.85 mV for the composite films containing ZFL and ZLN, respectively, at their maximum loading levels (i.e., 20 wt.%). Further, the RMS output voltage increase was not proportional to the filler loading; this finding was attributable to the decrease in the storage modulus of the composites at high ZnO loading rather than the dispersion of filler or the number of particles on the surface

A Wearable AR-based BCI for Robot Control in ADHD Treatment: Preliminary Evaluation of Adherence to Therapy

    Get PDF
A wearable, single-channel Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) based on Augmented Reality (AR) and Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) for robot control is proposed as an innovative therapy for robot-based Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) rehabilitation of children. The system manages to overcome the challenges regarding immersivity and wearability, providing a direct path between human brain and social robots, already successfully employed for ADHD treatment. Through the proposed system, even without training, the user can drive a robot, in real-time, by brain signals. A preliminary evaluation of the children adherence to the therapy was conducted as a case study on 18 subjects, at an accredited rehabilitation center. After investigating the children acceptance of the proposed system, different tasks were assigned to the volunteers aiming to observe their level of involvement. The experimental activity showed encouraging results, where almost all the participants were satisfied with the experience and keen to repeat it again in the future
