    Preparation of (Pb,Ba)TiO3 powders and highly oriented thin films by a sol-gel process

    Solid solution Pb1-xBaxTiO3, with particular emphasis on Pb0.5Ba0.5TiO3, was prepared using a sol-gel process incorporating lead acetate trihydrate, barium acetate, and titanium isopropoxide as precursors, acetylacetone (2,4 pentanedione) as a chelating agent, and ethylene glycol as a solvent. The synthesis procedure was optimized by systematically varying acetylacetone: Ti and H2O:Ti molar ratios and calcination temperature. The resulting effects on sol and powder properties were studied using thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystallization of the perovskite structure occurred at a temperature as low as 450 °C. Thin films were prepared by spin coating on (100) MgO. Pyrolysis temperature and heating rate were varied, and the resultant film properties investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and XRD. Under optimized conditions, highly oriented films were obtained at a crystallization temperature of 600 °C

    AbstractCascaded GMW sequences have two-level autocorrelation functions, which have important applications in communications and cryptology. In this paper, we consider the cascaded GMW sequences corresponding to a fixed finite chain of finite fields, and determine whether the different cascaded GMW sequences are cyclically inequivalent. By introducing the so-called restricted integer systems (RISs), it is proved that all the cascaded GMW sequences can be determined by means of the RISs, and the sequences determined by different RISs are different. Moreover, different cascaded GMW sequences are cyclically inequivalent

    A peak capacitor current pulse-train controlled buck converter with fast transient response and a wide load range

    It is known that ripple-based control of a switching dc-dc converter benefits from a faster transient response than a conventional PWM control switching dc-dc converter. However, ripple-based control switching dc-dc converters may suffer from fast-scale oscillation. In order to achieve fast transient response and ensure stable operation of a switching dc-dc converter over a wide load range, based on a conventional pulse train control technique, a peak capacitor current pulse train (PCC-PT) control technique is proposed in this paper. With a buck converter as an example, the operating modes, steady-state performance and transient respond performance of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter are presented and assessed. To eliminate fast-scale oscillation, circuit and control parameter design consideration are given. An accurate discrete iteration model of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter is established, based on which, the effects of circuit parameters on stability of converter operating in a DCM mode, mixed DCM-CCM mode, and CCM mode are studied. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the analysis results

    Monadic Decomposability of Regular Relations

    Monadic decomposibility - the ability to determine whether a formula in a given logical theory can be decomposed into a boolean combination of monadic formulas - is a powerful tool for devising a decision procedure for a given logical theory. In this paper, we revisit a classical decision problem in automata theory: given a regular (a.k.a. synchronized rational) relation, determine whether it is recognizable, i.e., it has a monadic decomposition (that is, a representation as a boolean combination of cartesian products of regular languages). Regular relations are expressive formalisms which, using an appropriate string encoding, can capture relations definable in Presburger Arithmetic. In fact, their expressive power coincide with relations definable in a universal automatic structure; equivalently, those definable by finite set interpretations in WS1S (Weak Second Order Theory of One Successor). Determining whether a regular relation admits a recognizable relation was known to be decidable (and in exponential time for binary relations), but its precise complexity still hitherto remains open. Our main contribution is to fully settle the complexity of this decision problem by developing new techniques employing infinite Ramsey theory. The complexity for DFA (resp. NFA) representations of regular relations is shown to be NLOGSPACE-complete (resp. PSPACE-complete)

    Irreducible Highest Weight Representations Of The Simple n-Lie Algebra

    A. Dzhumadil'daev classified all irreducible finite dimensional representations of the simple n-Lie algebra. Using a slightly different approach, we obtain in this paper a complete classification of all irreducible, highest weight modules, including the infinite-dimensional ones.     Directed Diffusion: Direct Control of Object Placement through Attention Guidance

    Text-guided diffusion models such as DALLE-2, Imagen, and Stable Diffusion are able to generate an effectively endless variety of images given only a short text prompt describing the desired image content. In many cases the images are of very high quality. However, these models often struggle to compose scenes containing several key objects such as characters in specified positional relationships. The missing capability to "direct" the placement of characters and objects both within and across images is crucial in storytelling, as recognized in the literature on film and animation theory. In this work, we take a particularly straightforward approach to providing the needed direction. Drawing on the observation that the cross-attention maps for prompt words reflect the spatial layout of objects denoted by those words, we introduce an optimization objective that produces ``activation'' at desired positions in these cross-attention maps. The resulting approach is a step toward generalizing the applicability of text-guided diffusion models beyond single images to collections of related images, as in storybooks. To the best of our knowledge, our Directed Diffusion method is the first diffusion technique that provides positional control over multiple objects, while making use of an existing pre-trained model and maintaining a coherent blend between the positioned objects and the background.     Uniform mesoporous carbon hollow microspheres imparted with surface-enriched gold nanoparticles enable fast flow adsorption and catalytic reduction of nitrophenols

    Adsorption and catalytic conversion of nitrophenols (NPs) over carbon-based materials have attracted wide interest. Batch adsorption and catalytic reduction of NPs have been widely reported, but less attention has been paid to flow systems, which require high particle size uniformity and superior active site accessibility. Herein, uniform mesoporous carbon hollow microspheres with their surfaces enriched by Au nanoparticles (denoted as Au@UMCHMs) are synthesized. The surface-enriched Au nanoparticle loading is promoted by the unique feature, that is, relatively dense external layers and mesoporous inner shells, of the carbon microspheres and the simple impregnation-reduction method. The Au@UMCHMs possess uniform sizes of ∼82 μm, small shell thickness of ∼5.8 μm, high specific surface area (∼1587 m2/g), and uniform mesopores (2.1 and 5.8 nm). They show excellent performance for flow adsorption and catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), superior to that of conventional Au-loaded carbon materials. In flow adsorption of 4-NP, the Au@UMCHMs show a fast and complete removal efficiency with high adsorption capacities (∼223 mg/g at breakthrough). They show outstanding performance in flow catalytic reduction of 4-NP. 4-NP with high concentrations (up to 100 mg/L) can be ultrafast and completely catalytically reduced to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) under rapid flow rates (up to ∼25 mL/min)

    Wrapped Magnetized Branes: Two Alternative Descriptions?

    We discuss two inequivalent ways for describing magnetized D-branes wrapped N times on a torus T^2. The first one is based on a non-abelian gauge bundle U(N), while the second one is obtained by means of a Narain T-duality transformation acting on a theory with non-magnetized branes. We construct in both descriptions the boundary state and the open string vertices and show that they give rise to different string amplitudes. In particular, the description based on the gauge bundle has open string vertex operators with momentum dependent Chan-Paton factors.Comment: 60 pages, LaTe

    Instability of the mitochondrial alanyl-tRNA synthetase underlies fatal infantile-onset cardiomyopathy

    Recessively inherited variants in AARS2 (NM_020745.2) encoding mitochondrial alanyl-tRNA synthetase (mt-AlaRS) were first described in patients presenting with fatal infantile cardiomyopathy and multiple oxidative phosphorylation defects. To date, all described patients with AARS2-related fatal infantile cardiomyopathy are united by either a homozygous or compound heterozygous c.1774C>T (p.Arg592Trp) missense founder mutation that is absent in patients with other AARS2-related phenotypes. We describe the clinical, biochemical and molecular investigations of two unrelated boys presenting with fatal infantile cardiomyopathy, lactic acidosis and respiratory failure. Oxidative histochemistry showed cytochrome c oxidase-deficient fibres in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Biochemical studies showed markedly decreased activities of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I and IV with a mild decrease of complex III activity in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Using next-generation sequencing, we identified a c.1738C>T (p.Arg580Trp) AARS2 variant shared by both patients that was in trans with a loss-of-function heterozygous AARS2 variant; a c.1008dupT (p.Asp337*) nonsense variant or an intragenic deletion encompassing AARS2 exons 5-7. Interestingly, our patients did not harbour the p.Arg592Trp AARS2 founder mutation. In silico modelling of the p.Arg580Trp substitution suggested a deleterious impact on protein stability and folding. We confirmed markedly decreased mt-AlaRS protein levels in patient fibroblasts, skeletal and cardiac muscle, although mitochondrial protein synthesis defects were confined to skeletal and cardiac muscle. In vitro data showed that the p.Arg580Trp variant had a minimal effect on activation, aminoacylation or misaminoacylation activities relative to wild-type mt-AlaRS, demonstrating that instability of mt-AlaRS is the biological mechanism underlying the fatal cardiomyopathy phenotype in our patients.Peer reviewe
