Geometrical foundations of fractional supersymmetry
A deformed -calculus is developed on the basis of an algebraic structure
involving graded brackets. A number operator and left and right shift operators
are constructed for this algebra, and the whole structure is related to the
algebra of a -deformed boson. The limit of this algebra when is a -th
root of unity is also studied in detail. By means of a chain rule expansion,
the left and right derivatives are identified with the charge and covariant
derivative encountered in ordinary/fractional supersymmetry and this leads
to new results for these operators. A generalized Berezin integral and
fractional superspace measure arise as a natural part of our formalism. When
is a root of unity the algebra is found to have a non-trivial Hopf
structure, extending that associated with the anyonic line. One-dimensional
ordinary/fractional superspace is identified with the braided line when is
a root of unity, so that one-dimensional ordinary/fractional supersymmetry can
be viewed as invariance under translation along this line. In our construction
of fractional supersymmetry the -deformed bosons play a role exactly

Hopf instantons, Chern-Simons vortices, and Heisenberg ferromagnets
The dimensional reduction of the three-dimensional fermion-Chern-Simons model
(related to Hopf maps) of Adam et el. is shown to be equivalent to (i) either
the static, fixed--chirality sector of our non-relativistic spinor-Chern-Simons
model in 2+1 dimensions, (ii) or a particular Heisenberg ferromagnet in the

Exotic galilean symmetry and the Hall effect
The ``Laughlin'' picture of the Fractional Quantum Hall effect can be derived
using the ``exotic'' model based on the two-fold centrally-extended planar
Galilei group. When coupled to a planar magnetic field of critical strength
determined by the extension parameters, the system becomes singular, and
``Faddeev-Jackiw'' reduction yields the ``Chern-Simons'' mechanics of Dunne,
Jackiw, and Trugenberger. The reduced system moves according to the Hall law.Comment: Talk given by P. A. Horvathy at the Joint APCTP- Nankai Symposium.

Poor Traces of the Room: The Live Archive at the Library
In his 1992 essay Eftermaele: âThat which will be said afterwardsâ Eugenio Barba states that â[i]n the age of electronic memory, of films, and of reproducibilityââŠâperformanceââŠâdefines itself through the work that living memory, which is not museum but metamorphosis, is obliged to doâ (78). His mention of memory is an acknowledgement of a spectatorâs implicit function as a legacy-maker in theatre. Memory, here, is valorized by its transformative and non-reproducible form, which to Barbaâs mind better reflects the experience of attending a performance. The notion of a spectator as a living archive is undoubtedly alluring, but Barba inadvertently reveals the limitations of this schema in his later essay âThe essence of theatreâ (2002) by describing this legacy as âaction that cannot be communicatedâ (p.18). Describing the afterlife of a performance as little more than an invisible trace is to denude a documentâs capacity to produce new meanings of past performances. The meaning of a text is not static: the moment a document is accessed the knowledge it has contributed in the construction of becomes live. The Live Archive was programmed as part of Kantor Is Here, a series of events celebrating Taduesz Kantorâs centenary and the teaching of Kantor at Rose Bruford. The Live Archive was a piece designed to theatricalize the processes by which knowledge is constructed through the social interactions that libraries engender. The âliveâ of the title denotes a medium that transmits information between different groups and peoples. This article argues that the library, as a concept encapsulating the sharing, exchange and interpretation of information, enables live performances to stretch beyond the event sphere into a distributed process of knowledge construction. On the QED Effective Action in Time Dependent Electric Backgrounds
We apply the resolvent technique to the computation of the QED effective
action in time dependent electric field backgrounds. The effective action has
both real and imaginary parts, and the imaginary part is related to the pair
production probability in such a background. The resolvent technique has been
applied previously to spatially inhomogeneous magnetic backgrounds, for which
the effective action is real. We explain how dispersion relations connect these
two cases, the magnetic case which is essentially perturbative in nature, and
the electric case where the imaginary part is nonperturbative. Finally, we use
a uniform semiclassical approximation to find an expression for very general
time dependence for the background field. This expression is remarkably similar

The role of HER1-HER4 and EGFRvIII in hormone-refractory prostate cancer
<b>Purpose</b>: The role of the type I receptor tyrosine kinase (HER) family in progression of prostate cancer is controversial. Breast cancer studies show that these receptors should be investigated as a family. The current study investigates expression of HER1-HER4 and EGFRvIII in matched hormone-sensitive and hormone-refractory prostate tumors.
<b>Experimental Design</b>: Immunohistochemical analysis was used to investigate protein expression of HER1-HER4, EGFRvIII, and phosphorylated Akt (pAkt) in matched hormone-sensitive and hormone-refractory prostate tumors.
<b>Results</b>: Surprisingly, high HER2 membrane expression in hormone-sensitive tumors was associated with an increased time to biochemical relapse (<i>P</i> = 0.0003), and this translated into longer overall survival (<i>P</i> = 0.0021). Consistent with other studies, HER4 membrane expression in hormone-sensitive tumors was associated with longer time to biochemical relapse (<i>P</i> = 0.042), and EGFRvIII membrane expression was associated with shorter time to biochemical relapse (<i>P</i> = 0.015). An increase in pAkt expression was associated with reduced survival (<i>P</i> = 0.0098). Multivariate analysis showed that HER2 was an independent positive predictive marker of time to relapse in hormone-sensitive prostate tumors (<i>P</i> = 0.014). In contrast, high HER2 expression in hormone-refractory tumors was associated with decreased time to death from biochemical relapse (<i>P</i> = 0.039), and EGFRvIII nuclear expression was associated with decreased time to death from biochemical relapse and decreased overall survival (<i>P</i> = 0.02 and <i>P</i> = 0.005).
<b>Conclusion</b>: These results suggest that the HER family may have multiple roles in prostate cancer, and that expression of the proteins alone is insufficient to predict the biological response that they may elicit
B2 and G2 Toda systems on compact surfaces: a variational approach
We consider the B2 and G2 Toda systems on compact surfaces. We attack the
problem using variational techniques. We get existence and multiplicity of
solutions under a topological assumption on the surface and some generic
conditions on the parameters. We also extend some of the results to the case of
