    Marketing research faces two challenges and a world of opportunity with long-term panel data

    There have been frequent calls in the literature for a more comprehensive understanding of marketing impact on long-term firm performance (Dawes, Meyer-Waarden, & Driesener, 2015; Hanssens & Pauwels, 2016; Lodish & Mela, 2007; Webster & Lusch, 2013). Retail scanner data has been the principal source of empirical evidence in this strategic domain, but it cannot explain the behavioural shifts that underpin sales dynamics. Now that far larger extended household panels are available, there is, for the first time, a valuable behavioural lens with which to observe long-term brand and category buying. In this paper we outline theoretical and methodological challenges to this new type of panel research. The first concerns an approach to extending established marketing theory to long-run repeat buying; the second relates to the inherent constraints of long-term panels. We present a new research agenda to progress explanatory theories of long-run brand building and category growth in this new but largely untapped resource

    Is Category Expansion a Realistic Long-Term Objective for Established Brands?

    How often do established CPG categories expand following a period of stationarity? To what extent can the levers under manufacturer control bring about persistent growth in total category value? The authors explore these questions in order to test the commonly held assertion that brand leaders in established markets can grow sales by expanding total category demand. Findings from a study of US household panel data describing the purchasing of nearly 500 small and large categories by 60,000 households over a nine-year period are presented. The observations focus on the growth impact of three sales levers, category penetration, purchase volume per buyer, and price per volume paid, in various strategic windows ranging from one to nine years. The results demonstrate that category penetration increase is the most likely lever for category growth. The association between over-time revenue increase and growth in buying household numbers is far stronger than that between unit price increases or category usage. While this clearly indicates a promising strategic direction for brand management, results also carry a health warning: categories are relatively volatile in the short term, but highly stable over time, therefore while the direction is clear the path is very narrow indeed

    A rising tide lifts all boats: the role of share and category changes in managing organic sales growth

    The strategic objective of marketing activities is to drive business growth by promoting the firm’s products. Beyond merger and acquisition, organic growth can be targeted from two sources: Market Share Gain and Category Growth. Market share is often the focus for corporate objectives and used as a success measure. This research explores the relative impact of these two elements on firm growth across product category and addresses whether market share should be the main focus for all organisations. The study covers 39 consumer packaged goods’ categories from the UK and US, across 189 manufacturers over three to five years of data, post-2010. We show that firm growth through market share gain is likely to benefit small firms, and large firms’ growth is likely to be driven by category growth. The results provide empirical support in the area of business growth and how marketing plays a crucial role in this pursuit

    Measuring Metacognition in Cancer: Validation of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 (MCQ-30)

    Objective The Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 assesses metacognitive beliefs and processes which are central to the metacognitive model of emotional disorder. As recent studies have begun to explore the utility of this model for understanding emotional distress after cancer diagnosis, it is important also to assess the validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 for use in cancer populations. Methods 229 patients with primary breast or prostate cancer completed the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale pre-treatment and again 12 months later. The structure and validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 were assessed using factor analyses and structural equation modelling. Results Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses provided evidence supporting the validity of the previously published 5-factor structure of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30. Specifically, both pre-treatment and 12 months later, this solution provided the best fit to the data and all items loaded on their expected factors. Structural equation modelling indicated that two dimensions of metacognition (positive and negative beliefs about worry) were significantly associated with anxiety and depression as predicted, providing further evidence of validity. Conclusions These findings provide initial evidence that the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 is a valid measure for use in cancer populations

    Jumping to Conclusions, a Lack of Belief Flexibility and Delusional Conviction in Psychosis: A Longitudinal Investigation of the Structure, Frequency, and Relatedness of Reasoning Biases

    Two reasoning biases, jumping to conclusions (JTC) and belief inflexibility, have been found to be associated with delusions. We examined these biases and their relationship with delusional conviction in a longitudinal cohort of people with schizophrenia-spectrum psychosis. We hypothesized that JTC, lack of belief flexibility, and delusional conviction would form distinct factors, and that JTC and lack of belief flexibility would predict less change in delusional conviction over time. Two hundred seventy-three patients with delusions were assessed over twelve months of a treatment trial (Garety et al., 2008). Forty-one percent of the sample had 100% conviction in their delusions, 50% showed a JTC bias, and 50%–75% showed a lack of belief flexibility. Delusional conviction, JTC, and belief flexibility formed distinct factors although conviction was negatively correlated with belief flexibility. Conviction declined slightly over the year in this established psychosis group, whereas the reasoning biases were stable. There was little evidence that reasoning predicted the slight decline in conviction. The degree to which people believe their delusions, their ability to think that they may be mistaken and to consider alternative explanations, and their hastiness in decision making are three distinct processes although belief flexibility and conviction are related. In this established psychosis sample, reasoning biases changed little in response to medication or psychological therapy. Required now is examination of these processes in psychosis groups where there is greater change in delusion conviction, as well as tests of the effects on delusions when these reasoning biases are specifically targeted

    AGN feedback and iron enrichment in the powerful radio galaxy, 4C+55.16

    We present a detailed X-ray analysis of 4C+55.16, an unusual and interesting radio galaxy, located at the centre of a cool core cluster of galaxies. 4C+55.16 is X-ray bright (L(cluster)~10^45 erg/s), radio powerful, and shows clear signs of interaction with the surrounding intracluster medium. By combining deep Chandra (100 ks) with 1.4 GHz VLA observations, we find evidence of multiple outbursts from the central AGN, providing enough energy to offset cooling of the ICM (P_bubbles=6.7x10^44 erg/s). Furthermore, 4C+55.16 has an unusual intracluster iron distribution showing a plume-like feature rich in Fe L emission that runs along one of the X-ray cavities. The excess of iron associated with the plume is around 10^7M_sol. The metal abundances are consistent with being Solar-like, indicating that both SNIa and SNII contribute to the enrichment. The plume and southern cavity form a region of cool metal-rich gas, and at the edge of this region, there is a clear discontinuity in temperature (from kT~2.5 keV to kT~5.0 keV), metallicity (from ~0.4 solar to 0.8 solar), and surface brightness distribution, consistent with it being caused by a cold front. However, we also suggest that this discontinuity could be caused by cool metal-rich gas being uplifted from the central AGN along one of its X-ray cavities.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, Accepted to MNRAS (minor revision

    Psychological mechanisms mediating effects between trauma and psychotic symptoms: the role of affect regulation, intrusive trauma memory, beliefs, and depression

    Evidence suggests a causal role for trauma in psychosis, particularly for childhood victimization. However, the establishment of underlying trauma-related mechanisms would strengthen the causal argument. In a sample of peo-ple with relapsing psychosis (n = 228), we tested hypoth-esized mechanisms specifically related to impaired affect regulation, intrusive trauma memory, beliefs, and depres-sion. The majority of participants (74.1%) reported vic-timization trauma, and a fifth (21.5%) met symptomatic criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. We found a specific link between childhood sexual abuse and auditory hallucinations (adjusted OR = 2.21, SE = 0.74, P = .018). This relationship was mediated by posttraumatic avoid-ance and numbing (OR = 1.48, SE = 0.19, P = .038) and hyperarousal (OR = 1.44, SE = 0.18, P = .045), but not intrusive trauma memory, negative beliefs or depression. In contrast, childhood emotional abuse was specifically associated with delusions, both persecutory (adjusted OR = 2.21, SE = 0.68, P = .009) and referential (adjusted OR = 2.43, SE = 0.74, P = .004). The link with persecutory delusions was mediated by negative-other beliefs (OR = 1.36, SE = 0.14, P = .024), but not posttraumatic stress symptoms, negative-self beliefs, or depression. There was no evidence of mediation for referential delusions. No rela-tionships were identified between childhood physical abuse and psychosis. The findings underline the role of cognitive-affective processes in the relationship between trauma and symptoms, and the importance of assessing and treating victimization and its psychological consequences in people with psychosis
