Phonons and d-wave pairing in the two-dimensional Hubbard model
We analyze the influence of phonons on the d-wave pairing instability in the
Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice at weak to moderate
interaction U, using a functional renormalization group scheme with
frequency-dependent interaction vertices. As measured by the pairing scale, the
B1g buckling mode enhances the pairing, while other phonon modes decrease the
pairing. When various phonon modes are included together, the net effect on the
scale is small. However, in situations where d-wave superconductivity and other
tendencies, e.g. antiferromagnetism, are closely competing, the combined effect
of different phonons may be able to tip the balance towards pairing.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Determination of phytoextraction potential of plant speciesfor toxic elements in soils of abandoned sulphide-mining areas
This study has determined contamination levels in soils and plants from the Sa˜o Domingos mining area, Portugal, by k0-INAA. Total concentrations of As, Sb, Cr, Hg, Cu, Zn and Fe in soils were very high, exceeding the maximum limits in Portuguese legislation. Concentrations of toxic elements like As, Sb and Zn were highest in roots of Erica andevalensis, Juncus acutus, Agrostis castellana and Nicotiana glauca. Additionally, As, Br, Cr, Fe, Sb and Zn in all organs of most plants were above toxicity levels.
Those species that accumulated relatively high concentrations of toxic elements in roots (and tops) may be cultivated for phytostabilisation of similar areas
Abstract Argumentation / Persuasion / Dynamics
The act of persuasion, a key component in rhetoric argumentation, may be
viewed as a dynamics modifier. We extend Dung's frameworks with acts of
persuasion among agents, and consider interactions among attack, persuasion and
defence that have been largely unheeded so far. We characterise basic notions
of admissibilities in this framework, and show a way of enriching them through,
effectively, CTL (computation tree logic) encoding, which also permits
importation of the theoretical results known to the logic into our
argumentation frameworks. Our aim is to complement the growing interest in
coordination of static and dynamic argumentation.Comment: Arisaka R., Satoh K. (2018) Abstract Argumentation / Persuasion /

Analysis of Dialogical Argumentation via Finite State Machines
Dialogical argumentation is an important cognitive activity by which agents
exchange arguments and counterarguments as part of some process such as
discussion, debate, persuasion and negotiation. Whilst numerous formal systems
have been proposed, there is a lack of frameworks for implementing and
evaluating these proposals. First-order executable logic has been proposed as a
general framework for specifying and analysing dialogical argumentation. In
this paper, we investigate how we can implement systems for dialogical
argumentation using propositional executable logic. Our approach is to present
and evaluate an algorithm that generates a finite state machine that reflects a
propositional executable logic specification for a dialogical argumentation
together with an initial state. We also consider how the finite state machines
can be analysed, with the minimax strategy being used as an illustration of the
kinds of empirical analysis that can be undertaken.Comment: 10 page
Cellular structure of -Brauer algebras
In this paper we consider the -Brauer algebra over a commutative
noetherian domain. We first construct a new basis for -Brauer algebras, and
we then prove that it is a cell basis, and thus these algebras are cellular in
the sense of Graham and Lehrer. In particular, they are shown to be an iterated
inflation of Hecke algebras of type Moreover, when is a field of
arbitrary characteristic, we determine for which parameters the -Brauer
algebras are quasi-heredity. So the general theory of cellular algebras and
quasi-hereditary algebras applies to -Brauer algebras. As a consequence, we
can determine all irreducible representations of -Brauer algebras by linear
algebra methods
Pairing via Index theorem
This work is motivated by a specific point of view: at short distances and
high energies the undoped and underdoped cuprates resemble the -flux phase
of the t-J model. The purpose of this paper is to present a mechanism by which
pairing grows out of the doped -flux phase. According to this mechanism
pairing symmetry is determined by a parameter controlling the quantum tunneling
of gauge flux quanta. For zero tunneling the symmetry is ,
while for large tunneling it is . A zero-temperature critical
point separates these two limits
Entanglement, local measurements, and symmetry
A definition of entanglement in terms of local measurements is discussed.
Viz, the maximum entanglement corresponds to the states that cause the highest
level of quantum fluctuations in all local measurements determined by the
dynamic symmetry group of the system. A number of examples illustrating this
definition is considered.Comment: 10 pages. to be published in Journal of Optics
A Duality Between Unidirectional Charge Density Wave Order and Superconductivity
This paper shows the existence of a duality between an unidirectional charge
density wave order and a superconducting order. This duality predicts the
existence of charge density wave near a superconducting vortex, and the
existence of superconductivity near a charge density wave dislocation.Comment: Main results are the same, but the presentation is significantly

Spontaneous decay in the presence of dispersing and absorbing bodies: general theory and application to a spherical cavity
A formalism for studying spontaneous decay of an excited two-level atom in
the presence of dispersing and absorbing dielectric bodies is developed. An
integral equation, which is suitable for numerical solution, is derived for the
atomic upper-state-probability amplitude. The emission pattern and the power
spectrum of the emitted light are expressed in terms of the Green tensor of the
dielectric-matter formation including absorption and dispersion. The theory is
applied to the spontaneous decay of an excited atom at the center of a
three-layered spherical cavity, with the cavity wall being modeled by a
band-gap dielectric of Lorentz type. Both weak coupling and strong coupling are
studied, the latter with special emphasis on the cases where the atomic
transition is (i) in the normal-dispersion zone near the medium resonance and
(ii) in the anomalous-dispersion zone associated with the band gap. In a
single-resonance approximation, conditions of the appearance of Rabi
oscillations and closed solutions to the evolution of the atomic state
population are derived, which are in good agreement with the exact numerical
results.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, typos fixed, 1 figure adde
Vacuum Induced Coherences in Radiatively Coupled Multilevel Systems
We show that radiative coupling between two multilevel atoms having
near-degenerate states can produce new interference effects in spontaneous
emission. We explicitly demonstrate this possibility by considering two
identical V systems each having a pair of transition dipole matrix elements
which are orthogonal to each other. We discuss in detail the origin of the new
interference terms and their consequences. Such terms lead to the evolution of
certain coherences and excitations which would not occur otherwise. The special
choice of the orientation of the transition dipole matrix elements enables us
to illustrate the significance of vacuum induced coherence in multi-atom
multilevel systems. These coherences can be significant in energy transfer
studies.Comment: 13 pages including 8 figures in Revtex; submitted to PR
