Dunfee analyzes the implications for corporate governance of the existence of morality within consumer and capital markets. Analysis of the role of moral desires within markets represents a new way of looking at the long-standing debate concerning the social responsibility of corporations

Start-stop testing of two self-acting air-lubricated spiral groove thrust bearing coatings

    Get PDF
Start-stop tests were conducted on air-lubricated spiral-groove thrust bearings. Application of a matrix-bonded molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) coating over a porous chrome oxide coating resulted in significantly lower friction, compared to bearings coated with chrome oxide only. The MoS2 coated bearing sustained 15,000 start-stop cycles at a maximum of 3600 rpm. Each cycle was 15 seconds on, 30 seconds off. The chrome oxide coated bearing failed by local welding after 2030 cycles. Both types of coatings exhibited early failures under higher thrust loads when operating films were insufficient to sustain the load without overheating

Nigeria\u27s plight: The causes, crimes, and casualties of Boko Haram

    Get PDF
This paper provides a brief history of Boko Haram including one of the group’s infamous attacks, the Nigerian government’s response to the insurgency, and whether the group has succeeded in promoting their ideals. The group has a long history of condemning Western education and encouraging an Islamic state. Since Boko Haram has been active, they have displaced thousands of Nigerians from their homes, in some cases even kidnapping them. A large kidnapping of schoolgirls from a university is one of their most notorious terrorist acts. Their motives for the kidnappings were to enforce Islam nationwide and to free their members in detention. The response to these kidnappings was international outrage, causing the Nigerian government to take action by any means necessary. This includes negotiations with the terrorist group. Boko Haram has been successful in conveying its message and ideals through the uses of terrorism

Hydrogen enhanced thermal fatigue of y-titanium aluminide

    Get PDF
A study of hydrogen enhanced thermal fatigue cracking was carried out for a gamma-based Ti-48Al-2Cr alloy by cycling between room temperature and 750 or 900 °C. The results showed that hydrogen can severely attack the gamma alloy, with resulting lifetimes as low as three cycles, while no failures were observed in helium for test durations of over 4000 cycles. The severity of hydrogen attack strongly depends on the upper limit of the temperature cycled and the cleanliness of the hydrogen. Specifically, the large scatter of life times at 750 °C (ranging from 36 to more than 3000 cycles) have resulted from the competition between surface oxidation and hydrogen attack. The results suggest that an understanding of the combined actions of thermal cycling and hydrogen degradation is needed for assessing materials for high temperature applications in hydrogen

    Territorial Status of Deepwater Ports

    Get PDF
This comment examines the legal status of offshore deepwater ports built to accommodate supertankers. The author argues that a deepwater port may be used in delimination of the territorial sea. The author goes on to analyze the necessity of territorial status for deepwater ports. The author also examines the circumstances that permit the expansion and resulting delimination of the coastal State\u27s territorial sea. Finally, the author discusses the United States Deepwater Port Act of 1974, which might be the first unilateral declaration dealing with superports

Into the Frightening Light: Emotional Healing Through the Creative Process

    Get PDF
This project explores the role the creative process and art making can have in emotional healing and briefly describes connections among the affective skills of Creative Problem Solving and art making. Essentially a self-study taking place over five months, this project focuses on how the author, by developing mindful practice and behavior, used visual journaling, blogging, drawing and painting as methods of discovering her own creative process and how that process aided in emotional transformation leading toward greater self-actualization and artistic identity. This work provides key learnings that can help others in overcoming creative blocks, exploring creative process or in investigating affective skills needed in Creative Problem Solving

Getting from Salbu to the Tipping Point: The Role of Corporate Action within a Portfolio of Anti-Corruption Strategies

Salbu\u27s big questions identify core issues for scholars on bribery and corruption. Salbu asks: (1) when may it be ethical to pay a bribe, (2) whether the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act\u27s ( FCPA ) provisions on routine government action permit us to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate facilitative payments, (3) whether non-governmental organizations ( NGOs ) should supplant the role of governments in fighting corruption, and (4) whether corporate principles can have an impact in the fight against corruption. Our focus is primarily on the latter question, but encompasses all of them. Implicit in Salbu\u27s list is the question of whether a single magic bullet can be identified as a likely solution to the problem of corruption, e.g. whether NGOs should supplant governmental action. Instead of phrasing the question in terms of either-or, we would ask: What is the appropriate mix of strategies to most effectively combat corruption? The choice is not choosing between strategies, but finding the right mix of strategies to capitalize on their synergies and most effectively combat corruption from all sides. We argue that a portfolio of strategies will be the most efficient route to conquering corruption. Over time, new strategies may emerge and the relative importance of strategies will shift within an anti-corruption portfolio. Among the current portfolio of strategies, we believe that corporate action, both individually and on a coordinated basis, can have a significant impact on the levels of corruption in international business. In addition, such an approach can provide a way out of the routine government action problem Salbu identifies. Within the realm of possible corporate strategies we have proposed a Sullivan-like principles approach which we believe can constitute an important weapon in the overall anti-corruption portfolio. Salbu critiques our approach and we respond. Finally, Salbu\u27s first question on the ethics of paying bribes raises further questions about the normative foundations of the battle against corruption. We argue that a sufficient normative foundation is essential for success in fighting corruption, and we offer some thoughts on the nature of adequate normative justification
