Movements of Channel Catfish and Flathead Catfish in Beaver Reservoir, Northwest Arkansas
A total of 497 channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and flathead catfish, Pylodictis olivaris. were tagged in Beaver Reservoir during two November-April tagging periods (1967-68 and 1968-69); total recaptures were 9.5 and 11.7% respectively. The longest time between tagging and recapture was 1622 days (4.4 years) for channel catfish and 494 days (1.4 years) for flathead catfish. The longest distances traveled were 43.1 km by a channel catfish and 44.3 km by a flathead catfish. Fisherman returns indicated that catfish were caught primarily from April through July. The many recaptures, even after long periods, within 1.6 km of the tagging point, suggested that fish moved little, or had homing tendencies. Captures of fish in trap nets indicated that rainfall and inflow possibly stimulated movements of channel catfish during the winter and early spring
String Breaking in Four Dimensional Lattice QCD
Virtual quark pair screening leads to breaking of the string between
fundamental representation quarks in QCD. For unquenched four dimensional
lattice QCD, this (so far elusive) phenomenon is studied using the recently
developed truncated determinant algorithm (TDA). The dynamical configurations
were generated on an Athlon 650 MHz PC. Quark eigenmodes up to 420 MeV are
included exactly in these TDA studies performed at low quark mass on large
coarse (but O() improved) lattices. A study of Wilson line correlators in
Coulomb gauge extracted from an ensemble of 1000 two-flavor dynamical
configurations reveals evidence for flattening of the string tension at

Neutrino emission rates in highly magnetized neutron stars revisited
Magnetars are a subclass of neutron stars whose intense soft-gamma-ray bursts
and quiescent X-ray emission are believed to be powered by the decay of a
strong internal magnetic field. We reanalyze neutrino emission in such stars in
the plausibly relevant regime in which the Landau band spacing of both protons
and electrons is much larger than kT (where k is the Boltzmann constant and T
is the temperature), but still much smaller than the Fermi energies. Focusing
on the direct Urca process, we find that the emissivity oscillates as a
function of density or magnetic field, peaking when the Fermi level of the
protons or electrons lies about 3kT above the bottom of any of their Landau
bands. The oscillation amplitude is comparable to the average emissivity when
the Landau band spacing mentioned above is roughly the geometric mean of kT and
the Fermi energy (excluding mass), i. e., at fields much weaker than required
to confine all particles to the lowest Landau band. Since the density and
magnetic field strength vary continuously inside the neutron star, there will
be alternating surfaces of high and low emissivity. Globally, these
oscillations tend to average out, making it unclear whether there will be any

The stellar, molecular gas and dust content of the host galaxies of two z~2.8 dust obscured quasars
We present optical through radio observations of the host galaxies of two
dust obscured, luminous quasars selected in the mid-infrared, at z=2.62 and
z=2.99, including a search for CO emission. Our limits on the CO luminosities
are consistent with these objects having masses of molecular gas <~10^10 solar
masses, several times less than those of luminous submillimeter-detected
galaxies (SMGs) at comparable redshifts. Their near-infrared spectral energy
distributions, however, imply that these galaxies have high stellar masses
(~10^11-12 solar masses). The relatively small reservoirs of molecular gas and
low dust masses are consistent with them being relatively mature systems at

The Calibration of the HST Kuiper Belt Object Search: Setting the Record Straight
The limiting magnitude of the HST data set used by Cochran et al. (1995) to
detect small objects in the Kuiper belt is reevaluated, and the methods used
are described in detail. It is shown, by implanting artificial objects in the
original HST images, and re-reducing the images using our original algorithm,
that the limiting magnitude of our images (as defined by the 50% detectability
limit) is . This value is statistically the same as the value found in
the original analysis. We find that of the moving Kuiper belt objects
with are detected when trailing losses are included. In the same data
in which these faint objects are detected, we find that the number of false
detections brighter than is less than one per WFPC2 image. We show
that, primarily due to a zero-point calibration error, but partly due to
inadequacies in modeling the HST'S data noise characteristics and Cochran et
al.'s reduction techniques, Brown et al. 1997 underestimate the SNR of objects
in the HST dataset by over a factor of 2, and their conclusions are therefore
