Global Seismic Oscillations in Soft Gamma Repeaters
There is evidence that soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) are neutron stars which
experience frequent starquakes, possibly driven by an evolving, ultra-strong
magnetic field. The empirical power-law distribution of SGR burst energies,
analogous to the Gutenberg-Richter law for earthquakes, exhibits a turn-over at
high energies consistent with a global limit on the crust fracture size. With
such large starquakes occurring, the significant excitation of global seismic
oscillations (GSOs) seems likely. Moreover, GSOs may be self-exciting in a
stellar crust that is strained by many, randomly-oriented stresses. We explain
why low-order toroidal modes, which preserve the shape of the star and have
observable frequencies as low as ~ 30 Hz, may be especially susceptible to
excitation. We estimate the eigenfrequencies as a function of stellar mass and
radius, and their magnetic and rotational shiftings/splittings. We also
describes ways in which these modes might be detected and damped. There is
marginal evidence for 23 ms oscillations in the hard initial pulse of the 1979
March 5th event. This could be due to the mode in a neutron star with B
~ 10^{14} G or less; or it could be the fundamental toroidal mode if the field
in the deep crust of SGR 0526-66 is ~ 4 X 10^{15} G, in agreement with other
evidence. If confirmed, GSOs would give corroborating evidence for

Searching for Earth-mass planets around Centauri: precise radial velocities from contaminated spectra
This work is part of an ongoing project which aims to detect terrestrial
planets in our neighbouring star system Centauri using the Doppler
method. Owing to the small angular separation between the two components of the
Cen AB binary system, the observations will to some extent be
contaminated with light coming from the other star. We are accurately
determining the amount of contamination for every observation by measuring the
relative strengths of the H- and NaD lines. Furthermore, we have
developed a modified version of a well established Doppler code that is
modelling the observations using two stellar templates simultaneously. With
this method we can significantly reduce the scatter of the radial velocity
measurements due to spectral cross-contamination and hence increase our chances
of detecting the tiny signature caused by potential Earth-mass planets. After
correcting for the contamination we achieve radial velocity precision of for a given night of observations. We have also
applied this new Doppler code to four southern double-lined spectroscopic
binary systems (HR159, HR913, HR7578, HD181958) and have successfully recovered

Damp Mergers: Recent Gaseous Mergers without Significant Globular Cluster Formation?
Here we test the idea that new globular clusters (GCs) are formed in the same
gaseous ("wet") mergers or interactions that give rise to the young stellar
populations seen in the central regions of many early-type galaxies. We compare
mean GC colors with the age of the central galaxy starburst. The red GC
subpopulation reveals remarkably constant mean colors independent of galaxy
age. A scenario in which the red GC subpopulation is a combination of old and
new GCs (formed in the same event as the central galaxy starburst) can not be
ruled out; although this would require an age-metallicity relation for the
newly formed GCs that is steeper than the Galactic relation. However, the data
are also well described by a scenario in which most red GCs are old, and few,
if any, are formed in recent gaseous mergers. This is consistent with the old
ages inferred from some spectroscopic studies of GCs in external systems. The
event that induced the central galaxy starburst may have therefore involved
insufficient gas mass for significant GC formation. We term such gas-poor

Microwave irradiation was applied to a sequence of condensation reactions from readily available 9-chloroacridines to provide a range of novel acridine–isoalloxazine conjugates. The combination of these two moieties, both of biological interest, was achieved by a chromatography free route
U-Pb Studies of Zircon Cores and Overgrowths, and Monazite: Implications for Age and Petrogenesis of the Northeastern Idaho Batholith
U/Pb isotopic studies of zircons, many containing xenocrystic cores with euhedral overgrowths, and monazite from igneous rocks and metasedimentary inclusions of the northeastern Idaho batholith yield linear arrays on concordia diagrams. We interpret these as mixing lines between an old component (cores) and a young component (overgrowths and zircons without cores). The lower intercept of such arrays with concordia may yield the minimum age of the rocks if the overgrowths and zircons without cores are discordant, or the crystallization age if they are concordant. Monazites yield apparently concordant ages either equal or less than the lower intercept zircon ages. The samples studied yield lower intercept ages ranging from 73.5+ or -6 Ma (foliated quartz diorite) to 46.5+ or -1 Ma (feldspar megacryst granite); ages obtained are consistent with crosscutting relations observed in the field. Upper intercepts yield ages of 1700 to 2349 Ma. These are interpreted to indicate the mean age of xenocrystic zircon. Studies of zircons from xenolith suites indicate that they could represent the source of the old zircon component. The zircon and monazite results, the generally high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the igneous rocks, and the isotopic composition of Pb in feldspar indicate that the magmas were derived anatectically from a continental crustal source or were extensively mixed with such old crust prior to or during emplacement

Statistical properties of SGR 1900+14 bursts
We study the statistics of soft gamma repeater (SGR) bursts, using a data
base of 187 events detected with BATSE and 837 events detected with RXTE PCA,
all from SGR 1900+14 during its 1998-1999 active phase. We find that the
fluence or energy distribution of bursts is consistent with a power law of
index 1.66, over 4 orders of magnitude. This scale-free distribution resembles
the Gutenberg-Richter Law for earthquakes, and gives evidence for
self-organized criticality in SGRs. The distribution of time intervals between
successive bursts from SGR 1900+14 is consistent with a log-normal
distribution. There is no correlation between burst intensity and the waiting
times till the next burst, but there is some evidence for a correlation between
burst intensity and the time elapsed since the previous burst. We also find a
correlation between the duration and the energy of the bursts, but with
significant scatter. In all these statistical properties, SGR bursts resemble
earthquakes and solar flares more closely than they resemble any known
accretion-powered or nuclear-powered phenomena. Thus our analysis lends support
to the hypothesis that the energy source for SGR bursts is internal to the

Size-Specific Tree Mortality Varies with Neighbourhood Crowding and Disturbance in a Montane Nothofagus Forest
Tree mortality is a fundamental process governing forest dynamics, but understanding tree mortality patterns is challenging because large, long-term datasets are required. Describing size-specific mortality patterns can be especially difficult, due to few trees in larger size classes. We used permanent plot data from Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides (mountain beech) forest on the eastern slopes of the Southern Alps, New Zealand, where the fates of trees on 250 plots of 0.04 ha were followed, to examine: (1) patterns of size-specific mortality over three consecutive periods spanning 30 years, each characterised by different disturbance, and (2) the strength and direction of neighbourhood crowding effects on size-specific mortality rates. We found that the size-specific mortality function was U-shaped over the 30-year period as well as within two shorter periods characterised by small-scale pinhole beetle and windthrow disturbance. During a third period, characterised by earthquake disturbance, tree mortality was less size dependent. Small trees (<20 cm in diameter) were more likely to die, in all three periods, if surrounded by a high basal area of larger neighbours, suggesting that size-asymmetric competition for light was a major cause of mortality. In contrast, large trees (≥20 cm in diameter) were more likely to die in the first period if they had few neighbours, indicating that positive crowding effects were sometimes important for survival of large trees. Overall our results suggest that temporal variability in size-specific mortality patterns, and positive interactions between large trees, may sometimes need to be incorporated into models of forest dynamics
Ubc9p and the conjugation of SUMO-1 to RanGAP1 and RanBP2
AbstractThe yeast UBC9 gene encodes a protein with homology to the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes that mediate the attachment of ubiquitin to substrate proteins [1]. Depletion of Ubc9p arrests cells in G2 or early M phase and stabilizes B-type cyclins [1]. p18Ubc9, the Xenopus homolog of Ubc9p, associates specifically with p88RanGAP1 and p340RanBP2[2]. Ran-binding protein 2 (p340RanBP2) is a nuclear pore protein [3,4], and p88RanGAP1 is a modified form of RanGAP1, a GTPase-activating protein for the small GTPase Ran [2]. It has recently been shown that mammalian RanGAP1 can be conjugated with SUMO-1, a small ubiquitin-related modifier [5–7], and that SUMO-1 conjugation promotes RanGAP1's interaction with RanBP2 [2,5,6]. Here we show that p18Ubc9 acts as an E2-like enzyme for SUMO-1 conjugation, but not for ubiquitin conjugation. This suggests that the SUMO-1 conjugation pathway is biochemically similar to the ubiquitin conjugation pathway but uses a distinct set of enzymes and regulatory mechanisms. We also show that p18Ubc9 interacts specifically with the internal repeat domain of RanBP2, which is a substrate for SUMO-1 conjugation in Xenopus egg extracts
