MMP-2 and MMP-9 in normal mucosa are independently associated with outcome of colorectal cancer patients.
BackgroundUpregulation of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 in various cancers has been associated with worse survival of the patients.MethodsWe assessed MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in normal colorectal mucosa from colorectal cancer patients in relation to the course of the disease.ResultsA high protein expression of MMP-2 as well as MMP-9 in normal mucosa was found to be correlated with worse 5-year survival. The combination of both parameters was an even stronger prognostic factor. These protein levels were found not to be related to the corresponding single nucleotide polymorphisms of MMP-2 (-1306C>T) and MMP-9 (-1562C>T). Multivariate analyses indicated that the MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in normal mucosa are prognostic for survival, independent of TNM classification.ConclusionMMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in normal mucosa are indicative of the course of disease in colorectal cancer patients
MMP-2 geno-phenotype is prognostic for colorectal cancer survival, whereas MMP-9 is not.
The prognostic significance of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and tumour protein levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was evaluated in 215 colorectal cancer patients. Single-nucleotide polymorphism MMP-2(-1306T) and high MMP-2 levels were significantly associated with worse survival. Extreme tumour MMP-9 levels were associated with poor prognosis but SNP MMP-9(-1562C>T) was not. Tumour MMP levels were not determined by their SNP genotypes

From incommensurate correlations to mesoscopic spin resonance in YbRh2Si2
Spin fluctuations are reported near the magnetic field driven quantum
critical point in YbRh2Si2. On cooling, ferromagnetic fluctuations evolve into
incommensurate correlations located at q0=+/- (delta,delta) with delta=0.14 +/-
0.04 r.l.u. At low temperatures, an in plane magnetic field induces a sharp
intra doublet resonant excitation at an energy E0=g muB mu0 H with g=3.8 +/-
0.2. The intensity is localized at the zone center indicating precession of
spin density extending xi=6 +/- 2 A beyond the 4f site.Comment: (main text - 4 pages, 4 figures; supplementary information - 3 pages,

Third-harmonic generation of a continuous-wave Ti : Sapphire laser in external resonant cavities
An all-solid-state tunable continuous-wave (cw) laser operating near 272 nm with a bandwidth Gamma approximate to 3 MHz has been developed. The third harmonic of light from a single-cw Ti:Sapphire laser has been generated using two external enhancement cavities. An output power of 175 mW has been produced, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 8%. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics
Myanmar seafood exports:Quick scan of the EU market potential
The Asian region is a major supplier of fish products to the European market. The aquaculture sector in a number of Asian countries has become an important producer as well as exporter of various captured and cultured seafood products. Since Myanmar is in a transition to democracy and the EU decided to remove most sanctions to fuel economic development, Myanmar is very interesting for the European seafood industry. The Dutch Centre for the Promotion of Import from Developing Countries (CBI) and LEI Wageningen UR decided to conduct this quick scan to analyse the EU market potential of the seafood sector in Myanmar
The Bangladeshi seafood sector : a value chain analysis
The Asian region is a major supplier of fish products to the EU market. Over the period 2005-2010 in particular, the aquaculture sector in some Asian countries became an important producer as well as exporter of whitefish and shrimps. Within the Asian region CBI is currently studying the possibilities of developing integrated programmes for the seafood sector for specific countries. For the development of these programmes, a good understanding of the current situation in the supply and demand side of the industry is essential
Pakistan seafood exports: Quick scan of the EU market potential
The Asian region is a major supplier of fish products to the EU market. The aquaculture sector in some Asian countries has become an important producer as well as exporter of white fish and shrimp, especially during the past five years. Within the Asian region CBI is currently developing an integrated programme for the seafood sector. For the development of this programme, a good understanding of the supply and de-mand side of the industry is necessary. In order to investigate whether it is advisable for CBI to invest in a programme to support further export growth of the seafood sectors of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, additional research is needed
