The case for new academic workspaces
Executive summary: This report draws upon the combined efforts of
a number of estates professionals, architects,
academics, designers, and senior managers
involved in the planning of new university buildings
for the 21st century. Across these perspectives,
all would agree â although perhaps for different
reasons - that this planning is difficult and that a
number of particular considerations apply in the
design of academic workspaces. Despite these
difficulties, they will also agree that when this
planning goes well, âgoodâ buildings are truly
transformational â for both the university as a
whole and the people who work and study in them.
The value of well-designed buildings goes far
beyond their material costs, and endures long after
those costs have been forgotten ..
Theory Building as Integrated Reflection: Understanding Physician Reflection Through Human Communication Research, Medical Education, and Ethics
Grounded in a presupposition that a single explanatory framework cannot fully account for the expansive learning processes that occur during medical residency, the article examines developing physiciansâ reflective writing from three disciplinary lenses. The goal is to understand how the multi-dimensional nature of medical residency translates into assembling educational experiences and constructing meaning that cannot be fully explained through a single discipline. An interdisciplinary research team across medical education, communication, and ethics qualitatively analyzed reflective entries (N=756) completed by family medicine residents (N=33) across an academic year. Results provide evidence for moving toward an integrated thematic explanation across disciplines. The authors suggest that the integration of disciplinary explanations allows for comprehensive understanding of reflection as a cornerstone in the broader formation of the physician. Examples provide evidence for an integrated understanding of a fuller human experience by considering the three thematic explanations as co-occurring, reciprocal processes
Managing polyglot systems metadata with hypergraphs
A single type of data store can hardly fulfill every end-user requirements in the NoSQL world. Therefore, polyglot systems use different types of NoSQL datastores in combination. However, the heterogeneity of the data storage models makes managing the metadata a complex task in such systems, with only a handful of research carried out to address this. In this paper, we propose a hypergraph-based approach for representing the catalog of metadata in a polyglot system. Taking an existing common programming interface to NoSQL systems, we extend and formalize it as hypergraphs for managing metadata. Then, we define design constraints and query transformation rules for three representative data store types. Furthermore, we propose a simple query rewriting algorithm using the catalog itself for these data store types and provide a prototype implementation. The Broad Absorption Line Tidal Disruption Event iPTF15af: Optical and Ultraviolet Evolution
We present multi-wavelength observations of the tidal disruption event (TDE)
iPTF15af, discovered by the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF)
survey at redshift . The optical and ultraviolet (UV) light curves
of the transient show a slow decay over five months, in agreement with previous
optically discovered TDEs. It also has a comparable black-body peak luminosity
of erg/s. The inferred temperature
from the optical and UV data shows a value of (35) K. The
transient is not detected in X-rays up to erg/s within
the first five months after discovery. The optical spectra exhibit two distinct
broad emission lines in the He II region, and at later times also H
emission. Additionally, emission from [N III] and [O III] is detected, likely
produced by the Bowen fluorescence effect. UV spectra reveal broad emission and
absorption lines associated with high-ionization states of N V, C IV, Si IV,
and possibly P V. These features, analogous to those of broad absorption line
quasars (BAL QSOs), require an absorber with column densities cm. This optically thick gas would also explain the
non-detection in soft X-rays. The profile of the absorption lines with the
highest column density material at the largest velocity is opposite that of BAL
QSOs. We suggest that radiation pressure generated by the TDE flare at early
times could have provided the initial acceleration mechanism for this gas.

Survey of Nutrition Education Among Medical Students
Introduction: The current literature regarding both specific interventions and the current level of nutrition education in the United States is scarce. The purpose of this paper is to provide medical student perspectives on both the degree and necessity of nutrition education during medical school.
Methods: Medicine in Motion (MM) is a non-profit student-run organization founded in 2018 that aims to address burnout in medicine through physical activity, community service, and philanthropy. MM issued a survey to nine of its chapters in January 2021 to assess a range of topics including burnout, physical activity, and nutrition education.
Results: Of 5500 invited students, 1182 (21.5%) responded. An average of 1.2 hours of formal nutrition education per year was reported across all participants. Students who received any degree of nutritional education reported 2.9 hours per year. Most students (57.6%) had not participated in a medical school course that provided formal education in nutrition. Of those that did participate in a nutrition course (42.4%), the course was required for 84.7% of students and the majority (80.1%) received 0-10 hours of nutrition education. Most respondents (88.7%) reported that requiring formal nutrition education should be a graduation requirement and a similar number of students (89.3%) believe medical students should receive formal training on nutrition counseling for patients. The majority (93.3%) of students either somewhat or strongly agreed that understanding the effects of nutrition/eating decisions on the human body is critical to maximizing patient care.
Conclusion: Based on prior studies, physicians feel underprepared to provide nutrition counseling to their patients despite the large role poor diet plays in the burden of disease. Most medical students in this cohort believe that understanding nutrition is vital to maximize patient care. Funding and curricular changes should be allocated towards expanding the nutrition curriculum across U.S. medical schools
Excitons in type-II quantum dots: Finite offsets
Quantum size effects for an exciton attached to a spherical quantum dot are
calculated by a variational approach. The band line-ups are assumed to be
type-II with finite offsets. The dependence of the exciton binding energy upon
the dot radius and the offsets is studied for different sets of electron and
hole effective masses
Estimating county health statistics with twitter
Understanding the relationships among environment, behav-ior, and health is a core concern of public health researchers. While a number of recent studies have investigated the use of social media to track infectious diseases such as influenza, lit-tle work has been done to determine if other health concerns can be inferred. In this paper, we present a large-scale study of 27 health-related statistics, including obesity, health insur-ance coverage, access to healthy foods, and teen birth rates. We perform a linguistic analysis of the Twitter activity in the top 100 most populous counties in the U.S., and find a signifi-cant correlation with 6 of the 27 health statistics. When com-pared to traditional models based on demographic variables alone, we find that augmenting models with Twitter-derived information improves predictive accuracy for 20 of 27 statis-tics, suggesting that this new methodology can complement existing approaches
