    Linear Connections in Non-Commutative Geometry

    A construction is proposed for linear connections on non-commutative algebras. The construction relies on a generalisation of the Leibnitz rules of commutative geometry and uses the bimodule structure of Ω1\Omega^1. A special role is played by the extension to the framework of non-commutative geometry of the permutation of two copies of Ω1\Omega^1. The construction of the linear connection as well as the definition of torsion and curvature is first proposed in the setting of the derivations based differential calculus of Dubois- Violette and then a generalisation to the framework proposed by Connes as well as other non-commutative differential calculi is suggested. The covariant derivative obtained admits an extension to the tensor product of several copies of Ω1\Omega^1.     Local methylthiolate adsorption geometry on Au(111) from photoemission core-level shifts

    The local adsorption structure of methylthiolate in the ordered Au(111)-(√3×√3)R30° phase has been investigated using core-level-shift measurements of the surface and bulk components of the Au 4f7/2 photoelectron binding energy. The amplitude ratio of the core-level-shift components associated with surface Au atoms that are, and are not, bonded to the thiolate is found to be compatible only with the previously proposed Au-adatom-monothiolate moiety in which the thiolate is bonded atop Au adatoms in hollow sites, and not on an unreconstructed surface, or in Au-adatom-dithiolate species

    Rapid Detection of Polymyxin-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae from Blood Cultures.

    Enterobacterial strains resistant to polymyxins are being increasingly reported worldwide. The conventional methods for detection of colistin-resistant isolates such as broth microdilution remain time-consuming (24 to 48 h), and methods such as disc diffusion and Etest are not reliable. Recently, the rapid polymyxin NP test was developed for rapid identification of polymyxin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae This test is based on the detection of glucose metabolism related to bacterial growth in the presence of a defined concentration of colistin (or polymyxin B). The formation of acid metabolites is evidenced by a color change of a pH indicator (red phenol) in less than 2 h. In this study, the polymyxin NP test was evaluated for detection of colistin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae directly from blood cultures. The test was performed with 73 blood culture sets (either spiked or clinical blood cultures) with various enterobacterial species. The test exhibited excellent discrimination between polymyxin-resistant and polymyxin-susceptible enterobacterial isolates, and results are obtained from blood cultures within 4 h. It is easy to perform and requires neither subculture nor a centrifugation step. This test is rapid, specific, and sensitive and allows early identification of polymyxin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae directly from blood cultures

    The Effect of Needle Exchange Programs on Blood-Borne Illnesses

    Needle exchange programs (NEPs) were created in order to improve the safety of people who inject drugs (PWIDs) and to reduce the risk of transmission of blood-borne illnesses. These programs provide PWIDs with clean needles in exchange for used needles. The purpose of this review is to determine whether or not NEPs are effective in reducing the transmission of blood-borne illnesses in PWIDs. This is important to nursing practice because nurses often work with PWIDs and are advocates for their patients, which requires EBP-backed treatment options. In order to conduct this review, five databases were used and eleven articles were selected. The eleven articles selected and utilized in this paper discuss the effectiveness and ineffectiveness, in some instances, of NEPs in reducing the transmission of blood-borne illnesses. Research indicates that the effect of NEPs on the transmission of blood-borne illnesses is inconclusive. For this reason, no practice change is indicated, but further research is recommended

    The BRST transformations for gravity in Ashtekar variables are obtained by using the Maurer-Cartan horizontality conditions. The BRST cohomology in Ashtekar variables is calculated with the help of an operator δ\delta introduced by S.P. Sorella, which allows to decompose the exterior derivative as a BRST commutator.
