    Filamentary fragmentation in a turbulent medium

    We present the results of smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations investigating the evolution and fragmentation of filaments that are accreting from a turbulent medium. We show that the presence of turbulence, and the resulting inhomogeneities in the accretion flow, play a significant role in the fragmentation process. Filaments which experience a weakly turbulent accretion flow fragment in a two-tier hierarchical fashion, similar to the fragmentation pattern seen in the Orion Integral Shaped Filament. Increasing the energy in the turbulent velocity field results in more sub-structure within the filaments, and one sees a shift from gravity-dominated fragmentation to turbulence-dominated fragmentation. The sub-structure formed in the filaments is elongated and roughly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the filament, similar to the fibres seen in observations of Taurus, and suggests that the fray and fragment scenario is a possible mechanism for the production of fibres. We show that the formation of these fibre-like structures is linked to the vorticity of the velocity field inside the filament and the filament's accretion from an inhomogeneous medium. Moreover, we find that accretion is able to drive and sustain roughly sonic levels of turbulence inside the filaments, but is not able to prevent radial collapse once the filaments become supercritical. However, the supercritical filaments which contain fibre-like structures do not collapse radially, suggesting that fibrous filaments may not necessarily become radially unstable once they reach the critical line-density.Comment: (Accepted for publication in MNRAS

    Statistical mixing and aggregation in Feller diffusion

    We consider Feller mean-reverting square-root diffusion, which has been applied to model a wide variety of processes with linearly state-dependent diffusion, such as stochastic volatility and interest rates in finance, and neuronal and populations dynamics in natural sciences. We focus on the statistical mixing (or superstatistical) process in which the parameter related to the mean value can fluctuate - a plausible mechanism for the emergence of heavy-tailed distributions. We obtain analytical results for the associated probability density function (both stationary and time dependent), its correlation structure and aggregation properties. Our results are applied to explain the statistics of stock traded volume at different aggregation scales.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures.     L-NAME causes antinociception by stimulation of the arginine-NO-cGMP pathway.

    NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) has been used extensively as a paradigmatic inhibitor of NO synthase and has been shown to cause antinociception in several experimental models. We describe here how L-NAME produced a dose-dependent antinociceptive effect when injected intraperitoneally in the mouse after acetic acid induced writhings, or intraplantarly in the rat paw pressure hyperalgesia induced by carrageenin or prostaglandin E2. In contrast another NO synthase inhibitor, NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), had no significant effect per se but inhibited L-NAME systemic induced antinociception in mice and local induced antinociception in the rat paw hyperalgesia test. D-NAME had no antinociceptive effect upon carrageenin-induced hyperalgesia. Pretreatment of the paws with two inhibitors of guanylate cyclase, methylene blue (MB) and 1H-:[1,2,4]-oxadiazolo-:[4,3-a] quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ) abolished the antinociceptive effect of L-NAME. L-Arginine and the cGMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor, MY 5445 significantly enhanced the L-NAME antinociceptive effect. The central antinociceptive effect of L-NAME was blocked by co-administration of L-NMMA, ODQ and MB. The present series of experiments shows that L-NAME, but not L-NMMA, has an antinociceptive effect. It can be suggested that L-NAME causes the antinociceptive effect by stimulation of the arginine/ NO/ cGMP pathway, since the antinociceptive effect of L-NAME can be antagonized by L-NMMA and abolished by the guanylate cyclase inhibitors (MB and ODQ). In addition, the NO synthase substrate, L-arginine and the cGMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor, MY5445 were seen to potentiate the effects of L-NAME. Thus, L-NAME used alone, has limitations as a specific inhibitor of the arginine-NO-cGMP pathway and may therefore be a poor pharmacological tool for use in characterising participation in pathophysiological processes

    Re-inventing Portuguese ceramic tiles: Using shape grammars as generative method and the impact on design methodology

    The following paper describes the process and results achieved with the workshop entitled ‘Re-inventing Portuguese ceramic tiles’ reflecting on design methodology and design teaching. Workshop participants were invited to rethink ceramic tile patterns developing a different process which used shape grammars as a generative system. Each participant group developed a three stage task using shape grammars principles and methodology. At a first stage all were exposed to the shape grammar formulation and rule system. At a second stage they had to explore shape rules and create a novel shape grammar. Each design solutions generated were presented for discussion. On the last stage all groups were presented with pre-existing patterns, invited to infer a grammar by extracting shape rules observed through design patterns and then extrapolate these findings to a third dimension. The preliminary results of stages two and three are of particular relevance in shape grammar research: shape grammar formulae does not constitute an intuitive process to most creative designers which are often trained to design singular solutions for a specific problem, more than one operative shape grammar can be formulated to represent the same corpus of solutions and lastly the generative potential of grammars transcends the normal capacities of the original grammarist aiding in design exploration and enlarging the corpus of feasible solutions.     Communications-Inspired Projection Design with Application to Compressive Sensing

    We consider the recovery of an underlying signal x \in C^m based on projection measurements of the form y=Mx+w, where y \in C^l and w is measurement noise; we are interested in the case l < m. It is assumed that the signal model p(x) is known, and w CN(w;0,S_w), for known S_W. The objective is to design a projection matrix M \in C^(l x m) to maximize key information-theoretic quantities with operational significance, including the mutual information between the signal and the projections I(x;y) or the Renyi entropy of the projections h_a(y) (Shannon entropy is a special case). By capitalizing on explicit characterizations of the gradients of the information measures with respect to the projections matrix, where we also partially extend the well-known results of Palomar and Verdu from the mutual information to the Renyi entropy domain, we unveil the key operations carried out by the optimal projections designs: mode exposure and mode alignment. Experiments are considered for the case of compressive sensing (CS) applied to imagery. In this context, we provide a demonstration of the performance improvement possible through the application of the novel projection designs in relation to conventional ones, as well as justification for a fast online projections design method with which state-of-the-art adaptive CS signal recovery is achieved.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, parts of material published in IEEE ICASSP 2012, submitted to SIIM

    On stochastic sea of the standard map

    Consider a generic one-parameter unfolding of a homoclinic tangency of an area preserving surface diffeomorphism. We show that for many parameters (residual subset in an open set approaching the critical value) the corresponding diffeomorphism has a transitive invariant set Ω\Omega of full Hausdorff dimension. The set Ω\Omega is a topological limit of hyperbolic sets and is accumulated by elliptic islands. As an application we prove that stochastic sea of the standard map has full Hausdorff dimension for sufficiently large topologically generic parameters.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figure

    Spatially resolved integral field spectroscopy of the ionized gas in IZw18

    We present a detailed 2D study of the ionized ISM of IZw18 using new PMAS-IFU optical observations. IZw18 is a high-ionization galaxy which is among the most metal-poor starbursts in the local Universe. This makes IZw18 a local benchmark for understanding the properties most closely resembling those prevailing at distant starbursts. Our IFU-aperture (~ 1.4 kpc x 1.4 kpc) samples the entire IZw18 main body and an extended region of its ionized gas. Maps of relevant emission lines and emission line ratios show that higher-excitation gas is preferentially located close to the NW knot and thereabouts. We detect a Wolf-Rayet feature near the NW knot. We derive spatially resolved and integrated physical-chemical properties for the ionized gas in IZw18. We find no dependence between the metallicity-indicator R23 and the ionization parameter (as traced by [OIII]/[OII]) across IZw18. Over ~ 0.30 kpc^2, using the [OIII]4363 line, we compute Te[OIII] values (~ 15000 - 25000 K), and oxygen abundances are derived from the direct determinations of Te[OIII]. More than 70% of the higher-Te[OIII] (> 22000 K) spaxels are HeII4686-emitting spaxels too. From a statistical analysis, we study the presence of variations in the ISM physical-chemical properties. A galaxy-wide homogeneity, across hundreds of parsecs, is seen in O/H. Based on spaxel-by-spaxel measurements, the error-weighted mean of 12 + log(O/H) = 7.11 +/- 0.01 is taken as the representative O/H for IZw18. Aperture effects on the derivation of O/H are discussed. Using our IFU data we obtain, for the first time, the IZw18 integrated spectrum.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 10 figures, 4 table
