Properties of Phase transitions of a Higher Order
The following is a thermodynamic analysis of a III order (and some aspects of
a IV order) phase transition. Such a transition can occur in a superconductor
if the normal state is a diamagnet. The equation for a phase boundary in an H-T
(H is the magnetic field, T, the temperature) plane is derived. by considering
two possible forms of the gradient energy, it is possible to construct a field
theory which describes a III or a IV order transition and permits a study of
thermal fluctuations and inhomogeneous order parameters.Comment: 13 pages, revtex, no figure

Risk and Business Goal Based Security Requirement and Countermeasure Prioritization
Companies are under pressure to be in control of their assets but at the same time they must operate as efficiently as possible. This means that they aim to implement âgood-enough securityâ but need to be able to justify their security investment plans. Currently companies achieve this by means of checklist-based security assessments, but these methods are a way to achieve consensus without being able to provide justifications of countermeasures in terms of business goals. But such justifications are needed to operate securely and effectively in networked businesses. In this paper, we first compare a Risk-Based Requirements Prioritization method (RiskREP) with some requirements engineering and risk assessment methods based on their requirements elicitation and prioritization properties. RiskREP extends misuse case-based requirements engineering methods with IT architecture-based risk assessment and countermeasure definition and prioritization. Then, we present how RiskREP prioritizes countermeasures by linking business goals to countermeasure specification. Prioritizing countermeasures based on business goals is especially important to provide the stakeholders with structured arguments for choosing a set of countermeasures to implement. We illustrate RiskREP and how it prioritizes the countermeasures it elicits by an application to an action case
Swiss adolescents' and adults' perceptions of cannabis use: a qualitative study
Few studies have attempted to investigate the nature of adolescents' and adults' conceptions and perceptions of cannabis use. Our objectives were to explore adolescent and adult perception of use and misuse of cannabis, and their opinions and beliefs about the current legal context and preventive strategies. We used focus group discussions with four categories of stakeholders: younger (12-15 year old) adolescents, older (16-19 year old) adolescents, parents of teenagers and professionals working with young people. In some areas (legal framework, role of the media, importance of early preventive interventions), we found consensual attitudes and beliefs across the four groups of participants. In all four groups, participants did not have any consensual vision of the risks of cannabis use or the definition of misuse. In the area of the prevention of cannabis use/misuse, while parents focused on the potential role of professionals and the media, thus minimizing their own educational and preventive role, professionals stressed the importance of parental control and education. Within the Swiss context, we conclude there exists an urgent need for information and clarification of the issues linked with cannabis use and misuse directed at parents and professional
AMBER on the VLTI: data processing and calibration issues
We present here the current performances of the AMBER / VLTI instrument for
standard use and compare these with the offered modes of the instrument. We
show that the instrument is able to reach its specified precision only for
medium and high spectral resolution modes, differential observables and bright
objects. For absolute observables, the current achievable accuracy is strongly
limited by the vibrations of the Unit Telescopes, and also by the observing
procedure which does not take into account the night-long transfer function
monitoring. For low-resolution mode, the current limitation is more in the data
reduction side, since several effects negligible at medium spectral resolution
are not taken into account in the current pipeline. Finally, for faint objects
(SNR around 1 per spectral channel), electromagnetic interferences in the VLTI
interferometric laboratory with the detector electronics prevents currently to
get unbiased measurements. Ideas are under study to correct in the data
processing side this effect, but a hardware fix should be investigated
seriously since it limits seriously the effective limiting magnitude of the
instrument.Comment: 10 page
