Poultry manure (22,5 %crude protein on dry basis) obtained from a battery operation was included in rations consisting of lucerne hay, maize meal and molasses. The control ration contained no manure. In three experimental rations, poultry manure replaced the nitrogen equivalent of lucerne hay in the control ration to an extent of 33,0, 66,0 and 100% resulting in rations containing 14,0, 29,0 and 47,0% poultry manure respectively. From metabolism studies conducted on 28 Merino wethers it was found that: (a) The voluntary intake of dry matter and organic matter, with the exception of the 100% replacement of the nitrogen equivalent of the lucerne hay in the control ration by poultry manure showed no statistical significant differences between the remaining rations. (b) The daily intake of gross energy decreased significantly (p< 0.01) as the percentage of manure in the ration increased from 14 to 47% No significant differences in energy intake occurred betwoen the control ration and the ration which contained 14%manure. (c) No significant differences occurred among the various treatments for the dry matter digestibility of the rations, although the digestibility of the organic matter, crude-protein, ether extract, nitrogen-free extract, fibre as well as gross energy increased with increasing levels of poultry manure. (d) With increasing levels of poultry manure; the digestible fibre content tended to decrease and together with the higher ash content of the poultry manure rations explained most of the observed decrease in total digestible nutrient and digestible energy values of rations with an increased level of poultry manure. (e) No significant differences occurred in the nitrogen balance of wethers on any of the treatments. (f) The results indicate that the most effective levels of poultry manure included in ration for purposes of production may lie between 14 and 29%

The broad-based eco-economic impact of beef and dairy production : a global review

Cattle have been the focus of an intense debate between those concerned about, among other things, the possible negative effects on global warming, land degradation, food competition, and human health and those who are positive toward the possible role of cattle in maintaining global socio-economic and environmental sustainability. This paper reviews the pros and cons in view of a projected increase in demand for animal-based foods and therefore in cattle numbers. Analyses of cattle numbers and foods from various literature sources suggest gross overestimation towards 2050. Although cattle are responsible for a major portion of methane emissions, the atmospheric accumulation of methane from cattle could possibly be overestimated due to methane’s short atmospheric lifespan, recent calculations of enteric fermentation, and methane’s warming potential, and the role of cattle in carbon sequestration and being a sink. Since carbon sequestration has more potential than emission reduction in limiting global warming, photosynthetic capacity should be maximised. It is concluded that whereas concerns about animal welfare, zoonosis, and antimicrobial resistance should be addressed, the call for a reduction in global cattle numbers because of the perceived negative effects mentioned above may be unwarranted. A reduction in cattle numbers could limit the advantage of livestock-related carbon sequestration and therefore largely defeat the objective of limiting global warming.http://www.sasas.co.zaam2024Animal and Wildlife SciencesSDG-02:Zero Hunge

A critical engagement with theological education in Africa

    Get PDF
The higher education landscape has arguably become one of the most arduous to traverse. More so in the African context, where a host of variables continiously challenge educators to reflect critically on their philosophies and practices as they engage an ever-changing audience. In this book, a critical engagement with theological education in Africa is offered. As the book originates from South Africa, it is presented as a South African perspective, although contributors are situated accross the African continent and abroad. The common denominator is that all contributers are, in some way or another, invested in theological education in Africa. The main contribution of this collaborative work is to be sought in the insights it offers on four main areas of theological education: A historical and current orientation on theological edcuation in Africa, some paradigm shifts in theological education in Africa, ministerial formation needs versus theological education challenges, and a critical reflection on elective models and methods. The book presents the original and innovative research of scholars for fellow scholars involved in theological higher education as it is grounded in the respective fields of interest of each contributor. It contributes to a better understanding of the complex African theological higher education landscape that is also mindful of post-COVID-19 realities. Methodologically the work draws on a combination of methods, including literature studies, empirical work, and in some cases sectional offerings from doctoral studies, as indicated in the various chapters

ARIA-Versorgungspfade fĂĽr die Allergenimmuntherapie 2019 = 2019 ARIA Care pathways for allergen immunotherapy

Allergen immunotherapy (MT) is a proven therapeutic option for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and/or asthma. Many guidelines or national practice guidelines have been produced but the evidence- based method varies, many are complex and none propose care pathways. This paper reviews care pathways for AIT using strict criteria and provides simple recommendations that can be used by all stakeholders including health professionals. The decision to prescribe MT for the patient should be individualized and based on the relevance of the allergens, the persistence of symptoms despite appropriate medications according to guidelines as well as on the availability of good-quality and efficacious extracts. Allergen extracts cannot be regarded as generics. Immunotherapy is selected by specialists for stratified patients. There are no currently available validated biomaikers that can predict MT success. In adolescents and adults, AIT should be reserved for patients with moderate/severe rhinitis or for those with moderate asthma who, despite appropriate phannacotherapy and adherence, continue to exhibit exacerbations that appear to be related to allergen exposure, except in some specific cases. Immunotherapy may be even more advantageous in patients with multimorbidity. In children, AIT may prevent asthma onset in patients with rhinitis. mHealth tools are promising for the stratification and follow up of patients
