The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community online: discussions of bullying and self-disclosure in YouTube videos

Computer-mediated communication has become a popular platform for identity construction and experimentation as well as social interaction for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The creation of user-generated videos has allowed content creators to share experiences on LGBT topics. With bullying becoming more common amongst LGBT youth, it is important to obtain a greater understanding of this phenomenon. In our study, we report on the analysis of 151 YouTube videos which were identified as having LGBT- and bullying-related content. The analysis reveals how content creators openly disclose personal information about themselves and their experiences in a non-anonymous rhetoric with an unknown public. These disclosures could indicate a desire to seek friendship, support and provide empathy

Influence of surface chemistry on the electronic properties of graphene related carbon materials

Here we report, using density functional theory and tight-binding approach, that the best candidates for conducting supramolecular devices can be obtained by engineering the surface chemistry and stacking conformation of these materials

Coming out with the media: the ritualization of self-disclosure in the Dutch television program Uit de Kast

Using the media to disclose one’s sexual identity has become an increasingly salient practice in recent years. Yet little is known about the reasons for the emergence of this form of self-disclosure. Based on an analysis of the Dutch television programme Uit de Kast (‘Out of the Closet’), this article relates the rise of mediated coming out practices to the ritualizing power of the media: we argue that media plays a quintessential role in transforming the socially unscripted act of coming out into a patterned, culturally meaningful performance. Our analysis reveals that the ritual work of the programme is embedded in the ways 1) the generic format of the show structures the self-disclosures, 2) the authority of the media is deployed to channel the coming out process, and 3) the programme, while controlling diversity, reinforces dominant societal values and ideologies. The case not only highlights how unprecedented ritual forms come to flourish in the current era of ‘participatory’ media culture, but also demonstrates how ritualization supports and naturalizes the claim that media is an effective agent to create order in everyday, ordinary lives

Analysis of talpid3 and wild-type chicken embryos reveals roles for Hedgehog signalling in development of the limb bud vasculature

Chicken talpid mutant embryos have a wide range of Hedgehog-signalling related defects and it is now known that the talpid gene product encodes a novel protein essential for Hedgehog signalling which is required for both activator and repressor functions of Gli transcription factors (Davey, M.G., Paton, I.R., Yin, Y., Schmidt, M., Bangs, F.K., Morrice, D.R., Gordon-Smith, T., Buxton, P., Stamataki, D., Tanaka, M., Münsterberg, A.E., Briscoe, J., Tickle, C., Burt, D.W. (2006). The chicken talpid gene encodes a novel protein essential for Hedgehog signalling. Genes Dev 20 1365-77). Haemorrhaging, oedema and other severe vascular defects are a central aspect of the talpid phenotype (Ede, D.A. and Kelly, W.A (1964a). Developmental abnormalities in the head region of the talpid mutant fowl. J. Embryol. exp. Morp. 12:161-182) and, as Hedgehog (Hh) signalling has been implicated in every stage of development of the vascular system, the vascular defects seen in talpid are also likely to be attributable to abnormal Hedgehog signalling. Gene expression of members of the VEGF and Angiopoietin families of angiogenic growth factors has been linked to haemorrhaging and oedema and we find widespread expression of VEGF-D, rigf and Ang2a in the talpid limb. Furthermore, ectopic expression of these genes in talpid limbs points to regulation via Gli repression rather than activation. We monitored specification of vessel identity in talpid limb vasculature by examining expression of artery-specific genes, Np1 and EphrinB2, and the vein-specific genes, Np2a and Tie2. We show that there are supernumerary subclavian arteries in talpid limb buds and abnormal expression of an artery-specific gene in the venous submarginal sinus, despite the direction of blood flow being normal. Furthermore, we show that Shh can induce Np1 expression but has no effect on Np2a. Finally, we demonstrate that induction of VEGF and Ang2a expression by Shh in normal limb buds is accompanied by vascular remodelling. Thus Hedgehog signalling has a pivotal role in the cascade of angiogenic events in a growing embryonic organ which is similar to that proposed in tumours

“A Moral Heroism Even Greater and Grander Than That of the Soldiers Who Fell:” The Transformation of the Public Sphere for White Southern Women After the Civil War

The following Senior Independent Study examines the expanded involvement of white southern women during and after the American Civil War through the unwitting transformation of traditionally conservative ideals and expectations of womanhood. The creation of Ladies Memorial Associations and the United Daughters of the Confederacy enabled elite southern women to have an impact on how the ideals of the Confederacy were remembered and carried on to future generations. This Senior I.S. focuses on the monuments that were build, how Confederate Memorial Days were organized, and the extent of involvement that women-ran memorial associations had in the rearing of children. The research in this project also examines the success of southern women’s efforts to preserve the overall legacy of the Confederacy. Despite these women’s increased presence in the public sphere being seen as contradictory to the conservative society they lived in, they legitimized their actions under the pretense that they were maintaining traditional female roles and the conservative, patriarchal ideals of the Confederate States of America
