Effects of Sleep Deprivation in Children and Adolescents

    Get PDF
Abstract Sleep plays a vital role in proper health and well-being throughout every person’s life. The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant, or it can cause harm if it accumulates over time. Sleep deficiency can raise one’s risk for serious health problems. The problem in today’s fast paced, technology driven society is that children are not getting enough sleep at night and their schools are demanding they start, thus wake, earlier and earlier. Sleep deprivation can cause a plethora of negative health consequences which set our children up for developmental failure. The purpose of this integrative literature review is to examine if later school start times are introduced, would they be beneficial to child and adolescent health and academic performance. The design of study presented here is an integrative literature review. Data bases that were searched include: CINAHL, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, PsycINFO, and SpringerLink. Three academic websites were used in addition including the National Institute of Health, the National Sleep Foundation, and Start School Later Inc. Review of the literature suggests that the amount of health risks and disparities directly correlate to sleep deprivation and improper sleep hygiene is vastly disturbing. The conclusion of this literature review suggests that children and adolescents need to acquire longer sleep duration and by setting back school start times, school districts and policy makers can help our youth achieve the sleep they require. Keywords: sleep deprivation, adolescents, health consequences, health-risk behaviors, academic achievemen

This publication provides information on assessing the value of tree plantings. It presents a valuation method based on the cost of replacement. Worksheets and instructions showing the step-by-step procedure for determining tree values of each species at any point in its life, in any part of the state, and under most existing conditions are included

Multiple Resuscitation Regimens in a Near-fatal Porcine Aortic Injury Hemorrhage Model

Objective: To compare early and delayed blood administrations in animals subjected to near-fatal hemorrhage in the presence of a vascular injury and resuscitated to different mean arterial pressures (MAPs). Methods: Fifty-four immature swine with 4-mm infrarenal aortic tears were bled to a pulse pressure of 5 torr and then resuscitated (estimated blood loss 40 to 45 mL/kg). Groups I, II, and III were resuscitated with shed blood at a rate of 2 mL/kg/min, followed by normal saline at a rate of 6 mL/kg/min. Groups IV, V, and VI received the same fluids in reverse order. The fluids were infused intermittently to maintain MAPs of 40, 60, and 80 torr. The animals were observed for 60 minutes or until death. Results: The animals resuscitated to a MAP of 80 torr experienced significantly higher intraperitoneal hemorrhage volumes and mortality than did the animals intentionally maintained hypotensive, regardless of whether blood or normal saline was administered first. There was no significant difference in mortality or hemorrhage volumes between any of the groups intentionally maintained hypotensive. The animals maintained at a MAP of 60 torr were significantly less acidotic than were the animals resuscitated with the same fluid regimen but to a MAP of 40 torr. Early blood administration also minimized the acidosis associated with hypotensive resuscitation. Conclusion: In this model of near-fatal hemorrhage with a vascular injury, maintenance of the hypotensive state produced comparable improvements in one-hour survival and reductions in hemorrhage volume regardless of whether blood or saline was administered first. Although hypotensive resuscitation resulted in improved outcome, it was associated with significant acidosis. This effect was minimized with moderate rather than severe underresuscitation and early blood administration.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75465/1/j.1553-2712.1995.tb03167.x.pd

Two Cyclocoelids from the Lesser Yellowlegs, Tringa flavipes (Scolopacidae), from the Central Flyway of North America, Including the Description of Haematotrephus selfi n. sp. (Digenea: Cyclocoelidae)

Seven specimens of cyclocoelids (6 specimens representing Haematotrephus selfi n. sp. and 1 specimen representing a second unidentified species of Haematotrephus) collected by the late Dr. J. Teague Self, former professor, Department of Zoology, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, U.S.A., from the body cavities of 3 lesser yellowlegs, Tringa flavipes, (2 birds collected from Roger Mills County, Oklahoma on 23 and 29 August 1963, and 1 collected from Manitoba, Canada on 3 June 1964) and deposited in the Manter Laboratory of Parasitology, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska are described. Haematotrephus selfi n. sp. can be distinguished from all other species in the genus that lack an oral sucker except Haematotrephus limnodromi by having intertesticular uterine loops. It most closely resembles H. limnodromi but differs from it by having a smaller body, a smaller pharynx, smaller testes, a shorter cirrus sac, and somewhat smaller eggs. In addition, H. selfi n. sp. lacks a uterine seminal receptacle

Endohelminths of a Snake Mackerel, Gempylus serpens (Trichiuroidea: Gempylidae), from the Gulf of Mexico

Endohelminths are reported from a female snake mackerel, Gempylus serpens (Trichiuroidea: Gempylidae), captured from a depth of 61 m in the Gulf of Mexico 140 km south of the mouth of Mobile Bay, AL, in August 1998. A diverse endohelminth parasite fauna was found: 29 plerocercoid type I tetraphyllideans from the lower intestine; 4 didymozoid metacercariae allocated to the collective group Monilicaecum and one didymozoid metacercaria of the collective group Torticaecum from the pyloric cecum; one juvenile Gonocerca phycidis from the stomach; and 5 larvae (L3 stage) comprising 3 species of Anisakis from the pyloric cecum. These nematodes were identified as species of Anisakis due to the presence of an oblong ventriculus lacking an appendix, no intestinal cecum or interlabia, 3 lips with dentigerous ridges, and an excretory pore located between the lateroventral lips. Differences in overall size and in the lengths of the ventriculus and esophagus in relation to total body length were used to distinguish the 3 species of Anisakis collected. Seven specimens of a possibly unnamed species of parasitic copepod representing Bomolochus infected the gill chamber. Stomach contents included 6 early-juvenile flatfish (Pleuronectiformes). All of the helminths are measured and illustrated, and for some of the parasites recovered, we are unaware of any reports from this host species

This document was prepared for the citizens of Berrien Springs and Oronoko Charter Township to inform public debate and policy decisions about opportunities for growth and conservation. The proposals within this document were self-initiated and unsolicited, but are intended to illustrate useful advice and long-term possibilities for actual implementation. They were collaboratively prepared in 2011 by twenty-six Andrews University graduate students and their three professors, who proudly live and practice within the local community.https://digitalcommons.andrews.edu/arch-books/1004/thumbnail.jp
