We present new results on ultrafast alloptical wavelength conversion in Silicon-on-Insulator waveguides through cross phase modulation. We demonstrate sub-picosecond all-optical switching with 13dB on/off ratio by combining the nonlinear wavelength conversion in the port waveguide with passive filtering using an integrated SOI microring resonator.\u

Ultrafast all-optical wavelength conversion in silicon-insulator waveguides by means of cross phase modulation using 300 femtosecond pulses

    Get PDF
In this paper we report the ultrafast all-optical wavelength conversion in Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) waveguides. We used a pump-probe setup with 300 femtosecond pulses to demonstrate large temporal phase-shifts, caused by the Kerr effect and free carrier generation. Large wavelength shifts of a 1683nm probe signal have been observed. The wavelength conversion, ranging from 10nm redshifts to 15nm blueshifts, depending on the time delay between the pump and probe pulses, is caused by the pump induced Cross Phase Modulation. Furthermore, an all-optical switching scheme using SOI microring resonators is discussed. These results enable ultrafast all-optical switching using SOI microring resonators

Laser operation at 1060 nm with slope efficiency of 0.95% and 440 ÎŒW output power for 2% outcoupling was demonstrated in Nd-complex-doped FDA/epoxy channel waveguides, in what to our knowledge is the first report of a rare-earth-ion-doped polymer waveguide laser. The threshold was 45 mW of absorbed pump power

Light Turning Mirrors in SiON Optical Waveguides for Hybrid Integration with CMOS Photo-detectors

    Get PDF
A new method is proposed for hybrid integration of SiON optical waveguides and standard CMOS photo-detectors based on anisotropic etching of 45° facets in a Si substrate. After removal of anisotropically etched Si structures in cladding SiO2, the fabricated total-internal-reflection mirrors can direct the output of the waveguides to photo-detectors placed on top of the chip. The metal-free fabrication process, designed to create these mirrors, is convenient for batch production. Fourier optics based simulations predict that the reflection efficiency of the mirrors is 68.5 %. The far field pattern obtained from the fabricated device is similar to the simulated one

Channel waveguides based on a polymer, 6-fluorinated-dianhydride/epoxy, which is actively doped with a rare-earth-ion-doped complex, Nd(thenoyltrifluoroacetone)3 1,10-phenanthroline, have been fabricated. Photoluminescence peaks at 880 nm, 1060 nm, and 1330 nm have been experimentally observed. By optimization of the fabrication\ud procedure of both, host material and optical structure, continuous-wave laser operation on both, the four-level and quasi-three-level transitions near 1060 nm and 880 nm, respectively, has been demonstrated in channel waveguides

Health inequalities and development plans in Iran: An analysis of the past three decades (1984–2010)

Introduction: Reducing inequalities in health care is one of the main challenges in all countries. In Iran as in other oil-exporting upper middle income countries, we expected to witness fewer inequalities especially in the health sector with the increase in governmental revenues. Methods: This study presents an inequalities assessment of health care expenditures in Iran. We used data from the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) in Iran from 1984–2010. The analysis included 308,735 urban and 342,532 rural households. Results: The results suggest heightened inequality in health care expenditures in Iran over the past three decades, including an increase in the gap between urban and rural areas. Furthermore, inflation has affected the poor more than the rich. The Kakwani progressivity index in all years is positive, averaging 0.436 in rural and 0.470 in urban areas during the time period of analysis. Compared to inequality in income distribution over the last 30 years, health expenditures continuously show more inequality and progressivity over the same period of time. Conclusions: According to the result of our study, during this period Iran introduced four National Development Plans (NDPs); however, the NDPs failed to provide sustainable strategies for reducing inequalities in health care expenditures. Policies that protect vulnerable groups should be prioritized

Waveguides, bends and Y-junctions with improved transmission and bandwidth in hexagon-type SOI photonic crystal slabs

This paper presents novel ways of implementing waveguide components in photonic crystal slabs based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI). The integration platform we consider consists of hexa¬gonal holes arranged in a triangular lattice (‘hexagon-type’ photonic crystal). The waveguides are made of one missing row of holes (W1) with triangular air inclusions symmetrically added on each side of the waveguide. \ud Size and position of these inclusions are tuning parameters for the band diagram and can be used for minimizing the distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) effect. The waveguides show single-mode behavior with reasonably high group velocity and large transmission window, inside the gap between H-like modes**. These waveguides, closely resembling conventional ridge waveguides, can be combined to form efficient bends and Y-junctions. The bends and Y-junctions include intermediate short waveguide sections at half the bend angle playing the role of corner ‘mirrors’. Qualitative design rules were obtained from 2D calculations based on effective index approximation.\u

Photodefinable electro-optic polymers for high speed modulators

We present a series of polymeric electro-optic (EO) materials based on the tricyanovinylidenediphenylaminobenzene (TCVDPA) chromophore which exhibits an exceptionally high photostability combined with a high EO activity. The EO properties of these derivatives are given and the best result was obtained with the di-tBut derivative 2, which showed a nearly doubling effect of r33r_{33} (14 pm/V to 25 pm/V), while increasing the concentration from 25 wt% to 37.5 wt%. A microring resonator design was made based on the PC-TCVDPA system. Waveguides were fabricated by photodefinition of inverted ridges in VSC, a negative epoxy based photoresist with low refractive index
