Rolling and sliding of a nanorod between two planes: Tribological regimes and control of friction
The motion of a cylindrical crystalline nanoparticle sandwiched between two
crystalline planes, one stationary and the other pulled at a constant velocity
and pressed down by a normal load, is considered theoretically using a planar
model. The results of our model calculations show that, depending on load and
velocity, the nanoparticle can be either rolling or sliding. At sufficiently
high normal loads, several sliding states characterized by different friction
forces can coexist, corresponding to different orientations of the
nanoparticle, and allowing one to have low or high friction at the same pulling
velocity and normal load.Comment: 5 figure
The kids feel (more than) all right : a study exploring the subjective experiences and perceptions of adult-male children raised in planned lesbian families as relates to their gender development
The purpose of this study was to explore the subjective experiences and perceptions of adult-male children of planned lesbian families as relates to their gender development. Furthermore, this study sought to explore if/how adult-male children of planned lesbian families perceive their family form to have impacted their constructions and expressions of masculinity and male identity. No study to date has exclusively, nor deeply, explored the subjective experiences and perceptions of this particular population as relates specifically to their gender development. This qualitative study relied on intensive interviewing as its data collection method. Interviews were semi-structured and conducted in person or via Skype. The study\u27s sample consisted of 12 participants (all white identified) between the ages of 18-30. The findings suggest that adult-male children reared in planned lesbian families: 1) largely experience themselves as expressing and conceptualizing masculinity in non-traditional ways; 2) feel overwhelmingly positive about the non-traditional ways in which they embody male identity; 3) most frequently name dimensions of emotionality as the qualities and characteristics they possess that constitute non-traditional expressions of masculinity/male identity; 4) experience some form of conflict (internal/external) around their non-traditional expressions of masculinity/male identity, mostly during adolescence; and 5) believe their mothers\u27 gender identities, gender expressions, and gender-related attitudes likely had the greatest impact on their gender development. This study has implications for future research, as well as for social work theory and practice
High Quality, Transferable Graphene Grown on Single Crystal Cu(111) Thin Films on Basal-Plane Sapphire
The current method of growing large-area graphene on Cu surfaces
(polycrystalline foils and thin films) and its transfer to arbitrary substrates
is technologically attractive. However, the quality of graphene can be improved
significantly by growing it on single-crystal Cu surfaces. Here we show that
high quality, large-area graphene can be grown on epitaxial single-crystal
Cu(111) thin films on reusable basal-plane sapphire (alpha-Al2O3(0001))
substrates and then transferred to another substrate. While enabling graphene
growth on Cu single-crystal surfaces, this method has the potential to avoid
the high cost and extensive damage to graphene associated with sacrificing bulk
single-crystal Cu during graphene transfer.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Influence of Temperature Fields on the Processing of Polymer Powders by Means of Laser and Mask Sintering Technology
Besides their high potential for individual series-production, powder and beam based additive manufacturing
technologies, like laser and mask sintering, are in general still restricted to prototyping applications. This is a
result of multiple limitations concerning part properties (e.g. mechanical and geometrical), their insufficient
reproducibility due to transient thermal conditions and the limited range of available materials. The main focal
point of this paper is to show the influencing parameters (e.g. temperature fields in the building chamber) of
powder-based thermoplastic processing technologies on part properties, like porosity and surface quality, and
on the processability of further new polymers (e.g. polypropylene and polyoxymethylene).Mechanical Engineerin
Cultivating diversity and food quality. Proceedings of Diversifood EU Forum, Brussels, 11 April 2018
To tackle this issue, Diversifood team organised a forum with policy makers and stakeholders on the 11th of April 2018, in Brussels.
Diversifood’s aim is to share results and key lessons including new approaches for the management of cultivated biodiversity, for plant breeding for sustainable farming systems, and new relationships among actors of food systems.
In the afternoon, there was time for discussion, knowledge sharing, collecting feedback and extending current policies to include cultivating diversity and food quality (for FP9, CAP 2020, The outputs of this workshop will feed Diversifood’s final recommendations.
The forum was kindly hosted by the European Committee of the Regions (Rue Belliard/Belliardstraat 101, 1040 Brussels)

(+)-{1,2-Bis[(2R,5R)-2,5-dimethyl-phospho-lan-1-yl]ethane- κ2 P,P′}(η4-cyclo-octa-1,5-diene) rhodium(I) tetra-fluorido-borate
The title compound, [Rh(C8H12)(C14H 28P2)]BF4, exhibits a rhodium(I) complex cation with a bidentate bis-phosphine ligand and a bidentate η2, η2-coordinated cyclo-octa-1,5-diene. Together the ligands create a slightly distorted square-planar cordination environment for the Rh(I) atom. There are three mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit and intra-molecular P - Rh - P bite angles of 82.78 (5), 82.97 (6) and 83.09 (5)° are observed. The dihedral angles between the P - Rh - P and the X - Rh - X planes (X is the centroid of a double bond) are 14.7 (1), 14.8 (1) and 15.3 (1)°. The structure exhibits disorder of one cyclo-octa-diene ligand as well as one BF4 anion
