Within organic agriculture it is difficult to provide all components necessary for poultry feeding. Sprouts of cereals with valuable composition could possibly compensate for this shortage. For that, it is necessary to analyze the content, the composition and the properties of sprouts from different varieties of cereals during germination. In order to produce a high-quality feed for poultry criteria for an optimal process of germination and a consistently good quality have to be defined

De Haas-van Alphen Oscillations in the Quasi-Two-Dimensional Organic Conductor κ-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2: The Magnetic Breakdown Approach

We present both experimental data and an analytic theory for the de Haas–van Alphen ~dHvA! effect in the two-dimensional organic single-crystal conductor k -(ET)2Cu(NCS)2. We show that the magnetization oscillation pattern and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectrum of our measurements are well described theoretically within the coherent magnetic breakdown (MB) model for a two-dimensional Fermi surface consisting of two open sheets and closed pockets connected by magnetic breakdown centers. The spectrum of Landau quantized energy levels changes substantially due to the MB. Landau bands develop whose bandwidth and relative distance between them oscillate in inverse magnetic field. These oscillations explain the observed fine structure of the magnetization pattern at fields above the MB field with the occurrence of ‘‘forbidden’’ frequencies in the FFT spectrum

New food composition data on selected ethnic foods consumed in Europe

Background: Reliable data on the composition of foods is needed to better understand individual diets, measure nutrient intakes and provide nutritional guidance for improving the health of the populations. Ethnic foods are becoming increasingly popular among all European consumers, and are the main source of nutrients in the diets of ethnic groups. However, there is limited information on the nutrient composition of ethnic foods in Europe. The objective of this study therefore was to generate new and reliable data on ethnic foods using harmonised methods for chemical analyses. Methods: New data on 128 ethnic foods were generated for inclusion in the national databases within the European Food Information Resource Network of Excellence through participants from France, Israel, Spain, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom. In each selected country, the list of prioritised foods and key nutrients, methods of analyses and quality assurance procedure were harmonised. Results: This paper presents the nutrient composition of 40 ethnic foods consumed in Europe. The nutrient composition of the foods varied widely because of the nature and variety of foods analysed, with energy content (kcal) ranging between 24 (biteku-teku, Blegium) and 495 (nachos, Italy) per 100 g of edible food. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were generally higher in most ethnic foods consumed in Italy and Spain compared with ethnic foods of other countries. Conclusions: The new data were scrutinised and fully documented for inclusion in the national food composition databases. The data will aid effective diet and disease interventions, and enhance the provision of dietary advice, in all European consumers

The role of external broadcasting in a closed political system

    Get PDF
This article investigates the role and impact of external broadcasting (radio and television) on a closed political system, through the example of the two post-war German states: the West German Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the East German German Democratic Republic (GDR). The aim is to debunk myths about the influence of external broadcasting on the events that led to German reunification in 1990. The study follows a historical approach and discusses what role external media played during the years of a divided Germany. The findings are based on several historical sources, research reports from the 1950s and 1960s and over 100 biographical interviews with former residents of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The article analyses the impact of external broadcasting on citizens and the political elite in times of crisis as well as during everyday life

Visualization of Solution Sets from Automated Docking of Molecular Structures

Aligning structures, often referred to as docking or registration, is frequently required in fields such as computer science, robotics and structural biology. The task of aligning the structures is usually automated, but due to noise and imprecision, the user often needs to evaluate the results before a final decision can be made. The solutions involved are of a multidimensional nature and normally densely populated. Therefore, some form of visualization is necessary, especially if users want to achieve higher level understanding, such as solution symmetry or clustering, from the data. We have developed a system that provides two views of the data. One view places focus on the orientation of the solutions and the other focuses on translations. Solutions within the views are crosslinked using various visual cues. Users are also able to apply various filters, intelligently reducing the solution set. We applied the visualization to data generated by the automated cryo-EM process of docking molecular structures into electron density maps. Current systems in this field only allow for visual representation of a single solution or a numerical list of the data. We evaluated the system through a multi-phase user study and found that the users were able to gain a better high-level understanding of the data, even in cases of relatively small solution sets
