    PERCEIVED HAZARD AND PRODUCT CHOICE: AN APPLICATION TO RECREATIONAL SITE CHOICE

    This study improves upon the standard "dummy variable" approach to modeling fish consumption advisories by jointly estimating a "perceived hazard" model and a site choice model. The perceived hazard model overcomes the shortcomings of the dummy variable model, namely that all anglers respond equally to advisories and that all anglers know of and believe the advisories. We find that anglers' perceived hazards associated with consumption advisories do affect product (recreational site) choice. Anglers' perceptions also affect welfare measures, where the benefits of contaminant removal follow a more reasonable pattern than that of the dummy variable approach.     BackgroundThe Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomics (CNP) at UCLA was an investigation into the biological bases of traits such as memory and response inhibition phenotypes-to explore whether they are linked to syndromes including ADHD, Bipolar disorder, and Schizophrenia. An aim of the consortium was in moving from traditional categorical approaches for psychiatric syndromes towards more quantitative approaches based on large-scale analysis of the space of human variation. It represented an application of phenomics-wide-scale, systematic study of phenotypes-to neuropsychiatry research.ResultsThis paper reports on a system for exploration of hypotheses in data obtained from the LA2K, LA3C, and LA5C studies in CNP. ViVA is a system for exploratory data analysis using novel mathematical models and methods for visualization of variance. An example of these methods is called VISOVA, a combination of visualization and analysis of variance, with the flavor of exploration associated with ANOVA in biomedical hypothesis generation. It permits visual identification of phenotype profiles-patterns of values across phenotypes-that characterize groups. Visualization enables screening and refinement of hypotheses about variance structure of sets of phenotypes.ConclusionsThe ViVA system was designed for exploration of neuropsychiatric hypotheses by interdisciplinary teams. Automated visualization in ViVA supports 'natural selection' on a pool of hypotheses, and permits deeper understanding of the statistical architecture of the data. Large-scale perspective of this kind could lead to better neuropsychiatric diagnostics

    The effect of yttrium and thorium on the oxidation behavior of Ni-Cr-Al alloys

    The effect of quaternary additions of 0.5% Y, 0.5 and 1.0% Th to a base alloy of Ni-10CR-5Al on the oxidation behavior and mechanism was studied during oxidation in air over the range of 1000 to 1200 C. The presence of yttrium decreased the oxidation kinetics slightly, whereas, the addition of thorium caused a slight increase. Oxide scale adherence was markedly improved by the addition of the quaternary elements. Although a number of oxides formed on yttrium containing alloys, quantitative X-ray diffraction clearly showed that the rate-controlling step was the diffusion of aluminum through short circuit paths in a thin layer of alumina that formed parabolically with time. Although the scale adherence of the yttrium containing alloy was considerably better than the base alloys, spalling did occur that was attributed to the formation of the voluminous YAG particles which grew in a mushroom-like manner, lifting the protective scale off the subrate locally. The YAG particles formed primarily at grain boundaries in the substrate in which the yttrium originally existed as YNi9

    The feasibility of using LANDSAT MSS (multispectral scanner) data to identify and map cover types for rangeland, and to determine comparative condition of the ecotypes was assessed. A supporting objective is to assess the utility of various forms of aerial photography in the process. If rangelands can be efficiently mapped with Landsat data, as supported by appropriate aerial photography and field data, then uniform standards of cover classification and condition may be applied across the rangelands of the state. Further, a foundation may be established for long-term monitoring of range trend, using the same satellite system over time

    Connective Tissue Growth Factor: A Cysteine-Rich Mitogen Secreted by Human Vascular Endothelial Cells

    Human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVE) cells have been previously reported to express the genes for the A and B chain peptides of the dimeric molecule Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) and to secrete PDGF-related factors into culture media. Anti-human PDGF IgG affinity chromatography was used to purify PDGF-related activity from HUVE cell conditioned media. Immunoblot analysis of the affinity purified proteins with anti-PDGF IgG and antibodies specific for the A or B chain peptides of PDGF combined with chemotactic and mitogenic assays revealed that the major PDGF immunorelated molecule secreted by HUVE cells is a monomer of approximately 36-38 kd MW and that less than 15% of the purified biologically active molecules are PDGF A or B chain peptides. Screening of an HUVE cell cDNA library in the expression vector lambda gtll with the anti-PDGF antibody resulted in the cloning and sequencing of a cDNA with an open reading frame encoding a 38 kd cysteine-rich secreted protein which our data indicate is the major PDGF-related mitogen secreted by human vascular endothelial cells. The protein has a 45% overall homology to the translation product of the v-src-induced CEF-10 mRNA from chick embryo fibroblasts. We have termed this mitogen Connective Tissue Growth Factor (CTGF)

    The Twin Astrographic Catalog (TAC) Version 1.0

    A first version of the Twin Astrographic Catalog (TAC) of positions for 705,679 stars within −18∘≀Ύ≀90∘-18^{\circ} \le \delta \le 90^{\circ} has been produced. The sky coverage of the TAC is complete to over 90\% in that area. The limiting magnitude is about B=11.5. Positions are based on 49124912 plates taken with the U.S. Naval Observatory Twin Astrograph (blue, yellow lens) at epochs 1977--1986. The TAC is supplemented by proper motions which are obtained from a combination with a re--reduced Astrographic Catalog (AC). Some AC zones are available now and a complete northern hemisphere is expected by fall 1996. Proper motions of almost all TAC stars will be generated as the AC work progresses. The average precision of a catalog position is 90 mas per coordinate at epoch of observation. A large fraction of that error is introduced by the currently available reference stars. The inherent precision of the TAC data is considerably better. The precision of the proper motions is currently 2.5 to 4 mas/yr. Magnitude--dependent systematic errors have been found and preliminarily corrected. The final reduction of this plate material will be performed with the Hipparcos catalog in 1997. The TAC is about 3 times more precise than the PPM or ACRS in the northern hemisphere at current epochs and contains about 3 times more stars. The TAC has a higher star density than the Tycho catalog and provides independent, high precision positions for a large fraction of the Tycho stars at an epoch about 10 years earlier than the Tycho mean epoch. The TAC version 1.0 data are released as the AC zones become available.     Experimental subjects receive a different presentation of a food product's potential health risk reductions if eaten regularly. They are then asked to bid for the product. Results suggest that the bids vary across the groups that receive differing risk information.
