Hypoglossal schwannoma masquerading as a carotid body tumor.
Study Objective. To describe the clinical presentation, evaluation, and treatment of a hypoglossal schwannoma. Methods. We report an unusual case of a hypoglossal schwannoma presenting as a pulsatile level II neck mass at the bifurcation of the external and internal carotid arteries, mimicking a carotid body tumor. Radiologic findings are reviewed in detail. Results. A 59-year-old female presented to a tertiary care medical center with complaints of a pulsatile right-sided neck mass. An MRA of the neck was obtained demonstrating a 5 cm mass located at the carotid artery bifurcation and causing splaying of the internal and external carotids. Based on clinical presentation and imaging, a diagnosis of a carotid body tumor was conferred and the patient scheduled for excision. Intraoperatively, the mass was noted to arise from the hypoglossal nerve, remaining independent of the carotid artery. On histopathologic analysis, the mass was determined to be consistent with hypoglossal schwannoma. Conclusion. Though rare, the hypoglossal schwannoma should remain a consideration in the evaluation of a parapharyngeal space mass. As this report demonstrates, the clinical and radiologic presentation of a hypoglossal schwannoma may closely mimic that of the more common carotid body tumor

Momentum modes of M5-branes in a 2d space
We study M5 branes by considering the selfdual strings parallel to a plane.
With the internal oscillation frozen, each selfdual string gives a 5d SYM
field. All selfdual strings together give a 6d field with 5 scalars, 3 gauge
degrees of freedom and 8 fermionic degrees of freedom in adjoint representation
of U(N). Selfdual strings with the same orientation have the SYM-type
interaction. For selfdual strings with the different orientations, which could
also be taken as the unparallel momentum modes of the 6d field on that plane or
the (p,q) (r,s) strings on D3 with (p,q)\neq (r,s), the [i,j]+[j,k]\rightarrow
[i,k] relation is not valid, so the coupling cannot be written in terms of the
standard N \times N matrix multiplication. 3-string junction, which is the
bound state of the unparallel [i,j] [j,k] selfdual strings, may play a role
here.Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, to appear in JHEP; v2: reference adde
Development of an inducible mouse model of iRFP713 to track recombinase activity and tumour development in vivo
While the use of bioluminescent proteins for molecular imaging is a powerful technology to further our understanding of complex processes, fluorescent labeling with visible light fluorescent proteins such as GFP and RFP suffers from poor tissue penetration and high background autofluorescence. To overcome these limitations, we generated an inducible knock-in mouse model of iRFP713. This model was used to assess Cre activity in a Rosa Cre-ER background and quantify Cre activity upon different tamoxifen treatments in several organs. We also show that iRFP can be readily detected in 3D organoid cultures, FACS analysis and in vivo tumour models. Taken together we demonstrate that iRFP713 is a progressive step in in vivo imaging and analysis that widens the optical imaging window to the near-infrared spectrum, thereby allowing deeper tissue penetration, quicker image acquisition without the need to inject substrates and a better signal to background ratio in genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs)
Deconstructing graviphoton from mass-deformed ABJM
Mass-deformed ABJM theory has a maximally supersymmetric fuzzy two-sphere
vacuum solution where the scalar fields are proportional to the TGRVV matrices.
We construct these matrices using Schwinger oscillators. This shows that the
ABJM gauge group that corresponds to the fuzzy two-sphere geometry is
. We deconstruct the graviphoton term in the D4 brane
theory. The normalization of this term is fixed by topological reasons. This
gives us the correct normalization of the deconstructed U(1) gauge field and
fixes the Yang -Mills coupling constant to the value which corresponds to M5
brane compactified on \mb{R}^ {1,2} \times S^3/{\mb{Z}_k}. The graviphoton
term also enable us to show that the zero mode contributions to the partition
functions for the D4 and the M5 brane agree.Comment: 26 page
embCAB Sequence Variation Among Ethambutol-Resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Isolates Without embB306 Mutation
Mechanisms of resistance to ethambutol in Mycobacterium tuberculosis remain inadequately described. Although there is mounting evidence that mutations of codon 306 in embB play a key role, a significant number of phenotypically ethambutol-resistant strains do not carry mutations in this codon. Here, other mutations in the embCAB operon are suggested to be involved in resistance development
ADHM/Nahm Construction of Localized Solitons in Noncommutative Gauge Theories
We study the relationship between ADHM/Nahm construction and ``solution
generating technique'' of BPS solitons in noncommutative gauge theories.
ADHM/Nahm construction and ``solution generating technique'' are the most
strong ways to construct exact BPS solitons. Localized solitons are the
solitons which are generated by the ``solution generating technique.'' The
shift operators which play crucial roles in ``solution generating technique''
naturally appear in ADHM/Nahm construction and we can construct various exact
localized solitons including new solitons: localized periodic instantons
(=localized calorons) and localized doubly-periodic instantons. Nahm
construction also gives rise to BPS fluxons straightforwardly from the
appropriate input Nahm data which is expected from the D-brane picture of BPS
fluxons. We also show that the Fourier-transformed soliton of the localized
caloron in the zero-period limit exactly coincides with the BPS fluxon.Comment: 30 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures; v3: minor changes, references added; v4:

The Final Fate of the Rolling Tachyon
We propose an alternative interpretation of the boundary state for the
rolling tachyon, which may depict the time evolution of unstable D-branes in
string theory. Splitting the string variable in the temporal direction into the
classical part, which we may call "time" and the quantum one, we observe the
time dependent behaviour of the boundary. Using the fermion representation of
the rolling tachyon boundary state, we show that the boundary state correctly
describes the time-dependent decay process of the unstable D-brane into a
S-brane at the classical level.Comment: 9 pages, revte

Adenosine kinase inhibition selectively promotes rodent and porcine islet β-cell replication
Diabetes is a pathological condition characterized by relative insulin deficiency, persistent hyperglycemia, and, consequently, diffuse micro- and macrovascular disease. One therapeutic strategy is to amplify insulin-secretion capacity by increasing the number of the insulin-producing β cells without triggering a generalized proliferative response. Here, we present the development of a small-molecule screening platform for the identification of molecules that increase β-cell replication. Using this platform, we identify a class of compounds [adenosine kinase inhibitors (ADK-Is)] that promote replication of primary β cells in three species (mouse, rat, and pig). Furthermore, the replication effect of ADK-Is is cell type-selective: treatment of islet cell cultures with ADK-Is increases replication of β cells but not that of α cells, PP cells, or fibroblasts. Short-term in vivo treatment with an ADK-I also increases β-cell replication but not exocrine cell or hepatocyte replication. Therefore, we propose ADK inhibition as a strategy for the treatment of diabetes.Stem Cell and Regenerative Biolog
Interfacial charge transfer in nanoscale polymer transistors
Interfacial charge transfer plays an essential role in establishing the
relative alignment of the metal Fermi level and the energy bands of organic
semiconductors. While the details remain elusive in many systems, this charge
transfer has been inferred in a number of photoemission experiments. We present
electronic transport measurements in very short channel ( nm)
transistors made from poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). As channel length is
reduced, the evolution of the contact resistance and the zero-gate-voltage
conductance are consistent with such charge transfer. Short channel conduction
in devices with Pt contacts is greatly enhanced compared to analogous devices
with Au contacts, consistent with charge transfer expectations. Alternating
current scanning tunneling microscopy (ACSTM) provides further evidence that
holes are transferred from Pt into P3HT, while much less charge transfer takes
place at the Au/P3HT interface.Comment: 19 preprint pages, 6 figure
