    Serving the Religious Information Needs of Our Communities Without Blowing the Budget

    Anecdotal evidence suggests that some Indiana public libraries are hesitant to purchase religious materials, especially small and medium sized libraries. The most frequently cited reasons are a potentially high demand upon a limited budget, the enormous pool of materials from which to select and the sometimes controversial nature of religious materials. Yet religious information needs are as real as any other need for information and, within the context of the current war, are of special importance for American citizens. After first addressing these hesitations in more detail, this article will offer practical suggestions for building a modest collection of religious reference materials for small Indiana public libraries

    Until recently, most library literature on intellectual freedom and censorship focused on external efforts to restrict access to materials already owned or made accessible by libraries. With 9/11 and the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act, the defense of patron privacy and the confidentiality of patron records, long a growing concern, has jumped to the fore. Self-censorship by citizens afraid to exercise their freedom to read out of fear that someone may uncover their reading habits and subject them to social or state sanctions has become a major issue. ("Read" is used throughout this essay for "read, view, listen to, or access.") In legal terms such fears exert a "chilling effect" on the exercise of First Amendment liberties

    Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies (hereafter referred to simply as peace studies) is one of the younger academic disciplines having its origins in the aftermath of World War II. And, believe it or not, it has many of its roots right here in Indiana. In 1948 Manchester College pioneered the first undergraduate peace studies program in America followed closely by Goshen and Earlham Colleges. These three programs now cooperate in the Lily-funded Plowshares project. (Details of this innovative initiative are available at its website http://www.plowsharesproject.org/) Indiana is such a magnet for peace studies as a discipline and profession that both the Peace and Justice Studies Association and the Historic Peace Church conferences were held in Goshen and Indianapolis respectively in 2005

    Within six weeks of the horrendous events of September 11, 2001, a mere blink of the eye in the usual legislative process, Congress passed and the President signed into law, Public Law 107-56, the “Uniting and Protecting America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act” also know as the “USA PATRIOT Act” or the “Anti-Terrorism Act of 2001.” It received bi-partisan support and near unanimous approval in both the United States House and Senate. It is 132 pages long and amends approximately fifteen sections of the United States Code

    Ecological Determinants of Respiratory Health: Examining Associations between Asthma Emergency Department Visits, Diesel Particulate Matter, and Public Parks and Open Space in Los Angeles, California

    Los Angeles County (LAC) low-income communities of color experience uneven asthma rates, evidenced by asthma emergency department visits (AEDV). This has partly been attributed to inequitable exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Promisingly, public parks and open space (PPOS) contribute to DPM mitigation. However, low-income communities of color with limited access to PPOS may be deprived of associated public health benefits. Therefore, this novel study investigates the AEDV, DPM, PPOS nexus to address this public health dilemma and inform public policy in at-risk communities. Optimized Hotspot Analysis was used to examine geographic clustering of AEDVs, DPM, and PPOS at the census tract unit of analysis in LAC. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis was used to examine the extent to which DPM and PPOS predict AEDVs. Finally, Geographic Weighted Regression (GWR) was employed to account for spatial dependence in the global OLS model. Optimized Hotspot Analysis confirmed significant clustering of elevated AEDVs and DPM in census tracts with reduced PPOS. After controlling for pertinent demographic characteristics (poverty, children, race/ ethnicity), regression analysis confirmed that DPM was significantly positively associated with AEDVs, whereas PPOS was significantly negatively associated with AEDVs. Furthermore, GWR revealed that 71.5% of LACs census tracts would benefit from DPM reductions and 79.4% would benefit from PPOS increases toward redressing AEDVs. This is the first study to identify AEDV reductions in census tracts with higher concentrations of PPOS. Thus, reducing DPM and increasing PPOS may serve to improve asthma outcomes, particularly in lowincome communities of color

    Crop Residue Harvest Economics: An Iowa and North Dakota Case Study

    Rigorous economic analyses are crucial for the successful launch of lignocellulosic bioenergy facilities in 2014 and beyond. Our objectives are to (1) introduce readers to a query tool developed to use data downloaded from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) REAPnet for constructing enterprise budgets and (2) demonstrate the use of the query tool with REAPnet data from two field research sites (Ames, IA, and Mandan, ND) for evaluating short-term economic performance of various biofuel feedstock production strategies. Our results for both sites showed that short-term (\u3c3 years) impacts on grain profitability were lower at lower average annual crop residue removal rates. However, it will be important to monitor longer term changes to see if grain profitability declines over time and if biomass harvest degrades soil resources. Analyses for Iowa showed short-term breakeven field-edge biomass prices of 26–26–42Mg−1 among the most efficient strategies, while results for North Dakota showed breakeven prices of 54–54–73 Mg−1. We suggest that development of the data query tool is important because it helps illustrate several different soil and crop management strategies that could be used to provide sustainable feedstock supplies

    Nanophase Carbonates on Mars: Does Evolved Gas Analysis of Nanophase Carbonates Reveal a Large Organic Carbon Budget in Near-Surface Martian Materials?

    Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA), which involves heating a sample and monitoring the gases released, has been performed on Mars by the Viking gas chromatography/mass spectrometry instruments, the Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer (TEGA) on the Phoenix lander, and the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Mars Science Laboratory. All of these instruments detected CO2 released during sample analysis at abundances of approx. 0.1 to 5 wt% assuming a carbonate source. The source of the CO2 can be constrained by evaluating the temperature of the gas release, a capability of both the TEGA and SAM instruments. The samples analyzed by SAM show that the majority of the CO2 is released below 400C, much lower than traditional carbonate decomposition temperatures which can be as low as 400C for some siderites, with magnesites and calcites decomposing at even higher temperatures. In addition to mineralogy, decomposition temperature can depend on particle size (among other factors). If carbonates formed on Mars under low temperature and relative humidity conditions, the resulting small particle size (nanophase) carbonates could have low decomposition temperatures. We have found that calcite can be synthesized by exposing CaO to water vapor and CO2 and that the resulting mineral has an EGA peak of approx. 550C for CO2, which is about 200C lower than for other calcites. Work is ongoing to produce Fe and Mg-bearing carbonates using the same process. Current results suggest that nanophase calcium carbonates cannot explain the CO2 released from martian samples. If the decomposition temperatures of Mg and Fe-bearing nanophase carbonates are not significantly lower than 400C, other candidate sources include oxalates and carboxylated organic molecules. If present, the abundance of organic carbon in these samples could be greater than 0.1 wt % (1000s of ppm), a signficant departure from the paradigm of the organic-poor Mars based on Viking results
