    Exploring the Role of Social Media in the Identity Development of Trans Individuals

    This study explores the role of social media in the identity development of trans individuals and whether it can be viewed as a means to gain social support and thus enhance positive identity development. Traditional models of identity development, as well as those for trans individuals, count social support as a key factor in psychosocial well-being, and adaptive coping. However, many trans people may face difficulty in finding or accessing direct social support. This study consisted of five semi-structured interviews with trans individuals exploring their experiences using social media and their perceptions of its influence on their identity development. Using, Queer Theory as well as D’Augelli’s Model of Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Identity Development to inform this phenomenological study and analysis, three major themes were identified: Social Support, Negative Interactions and Microaggressions, and Access. Sub-themes of visibility, coming out, direct experiences of negativity and pressure to conform, indirect experiences of perception and external expectations along with frequency of use and social media resources were also identified. Participants reported both positive and negative aspects of social media usage that they felt had influenced their identity development and self-image. Regardless of their perceptions of its influence, all participants continued using social media. The findings of this study informed the recommendations for practitioners serving the trans community as well as trans community members themselves about the variety of potential experiences for trans people who might seek or advise others to use social media as a means to find or access social support

    Perceptions of Risk within Pastoralist Households in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia

    Perceptions of risk may vary within households as well as across households and communities. In this paper, we take advantage of panel survey data collected quarterly over a period of 2 ½ years to see how perceptions of risk vary across individuals over time. The surveyed households are in pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia and the survey period coincides with a severe drought in this region and the beginning of the recovery. We identify the structural heterogeneity of the perceptions of risk of these individuals. Because of the nature of panel data, we can also test how the perceptions of risk are affected by shocks in previous periods. In particular, we ask how an individual's risk perceptions change when shocks happen to him or herself, to other members of his or her, family, or to members of his or her community. This allows us to ask how expectations adapt based on the things that are happening to others and allows us to look at issues of social networks and learning.Risk and Uncertainty,

    Oral Cancer Awareness and its Determinants among a Selected Malaysian Population

    Objective: To assess oral cancer awareness, its associated factors and related sources of information among a selected group of Malaysians. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on all Malaysian ethnic groups aged >= 15 years old at eight strategically chosen shopping malls within a two week time period. Data were analysed using chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression. Significance level was set at alpha<0.05. Results: Most (84.2%) respondents had heard of oral cancer. Smoking was the most (92.4%) recognized high risk habit. Similar levels of awareness were seen for unhealed ulcers (57.3%) and red/white patches (58.0%) as signs of oral cancer. Age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, education, occupation and income were significantly associated with oral cancer awareness (p<0.05). Conclusions: There was a general lack of awareness regarding the risk habits, early signs and symptoms, and the benefits of detecting this disease at an early stage. Mass media and health campaigns were the main sources of information about oral cancer.     Simulating radiative shocks in nozzle shock tubes

    We use the recently developed Center for Radiative Shock Hydrodynamics (CRASH) code to numerically simulate laser-driven radiative shock experiments. These shocks are launched by an ablated beryllium disk and are driven down xenon-filled plastic tubes. The simulations are initialized by the two-dimensional version of the Lagrangian Hyades code which is used to evaluate the laser energy deposition during the first 1.1ns. The later times are calculated with the CRASH code. This code solves for the multi-material hydrodynamics with separate electron and ion temperatures on an Eulerian block-adaptive-mesh and includes a multi-group flux-limited radiation diffusion and electron thermal heat conduction. The goal of the present paper is to demonstrate the capability to simulate radiative shocks of essentially three-dimensional experimental configurations, such as circular and elliptical nozzles. We show that the compound shock structure of the primary and wall shock is captured and verify that the shock properties are consistent with order-of-magnitude estimates. The produced synthetic radiographs can be used for comparison with future nozzle experiments at high-energy-density laser facilities.Comment: submitted to High Energy Density Physic

    In silico profiling of miRNAs and their target polymorphisms in leukemia associated genes

    Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) within microRNA (miRNA) encoding regions of the genome are a large potential source for biologically relevant variation. SNPs along with miRNA act as a powerful tool to study the biology of a disease and also have the potential in monitoring disease prognosis and diagnosis. Therefore, evaluating the functional role of target mRNA will be a major challenge of future studies in the field of cancer biomarker research in leukemia. To assess, whether miRNA target SNPs are implicated in leukemia associated genes, we conducted an in silico approach along with the availability of publicly available web based tools for miRNA prediction and comprehensive genomic databases of SNPs. In this in-depth report, we attempted to use two computational approaches: prediction of miRNA in leukemia associated genes, and identifying the functional role of mRNAs targeted by miRNA. Our results from this study suggest that the application of in silico algorithms miRdSNP, PupaSuite and UTRScan analyses might provide an alternative approach to select target untranslated region (UTR) SNPs and understand the effect of SNPs on the functional attributes or molecular phenotype of a protein

    Hybrid Method for Digits Recognition using Fixed-Frame Scores and Derived Pitch

    This paper presents a procedure of frame normalization based on the traditional dynamic time warping (DTW) using the LPC coefficients. The redefined method is called as the DTW frame-fixing method (DTW-FF), it works by normalizing the word frames of the input against the reference frames. The enthusiasm to this study is due to neural network limitation that entails a fix number of input nodes for when processing multiple inputs in parallel. Due to this problem, this research is initiated to reduce the amount of computation and complexity in a neural network by reducing the number of inputs into the network. In this study, dynamic warping process is used, in which local distance scores of the warping path are fixed and collected so that their scores are of equal number of frames. Also studied in this paper is the consideration of pitch as a contributing feature to the speech recognition. Results showed a good performance and improvement when using pitch along with DTW-FF feature. The convergence rate between using the steepest gradient descent is also compared to another method namely conjugate gradient method. Convergence rate is also improved when conjugate gradient method is introduced in the back-propagation algorithm

    Perspectives on Development in Arid and Semi-Arid East Africa: Results of a Ranking Exercise

    This study investigates perspectives on development held by individuals living in arid and semi-arid areas of northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. Overall, we find that interventions to meet basic human needs (access to water, health care and education) are the most highly desired. Projects supporting pastoral livelihoods (livestock health and marketing-oriented, restocking and conflict resolution) are second most important, followed by those that support alternatives to pastoralism (cropping, other income generating activities). Econometric analysis indicates that variation in rankings is mostly driven by variation across communities rather than across households within communities, lending support to community-based approaches to priority setting

    This paper presents a simple two-period, dual economy model in which migration options may affect the informal financing of educational investments. When credit contracts are universally available and perfectly enforceable, spatially varied returns to human capital have no effect on educational investment patterns. But when financial markets are incomplete and informal mechanisms subject to imperfect contract enforcement must fill the breach, spatial inequality in infrastructure or other attributes that affect the returns to education create spatial differentiation in educational lending and consequently, in educational attainment. Although migration options can increase the returns to education, they can also choke off the informal finance on which poorer rural households depend for long-term, lumpy investments like children\u27s education
