Reference Mutability for DOT
Reference mutability is a type-based technique for controlling mutation that has been thoroughly studied in Java. We explore how reference mutability interacts with the features of Scala by adding it to the Dependent Object Types (DOT) calculus. Our extension shows how reference mutability can be encoded using existing Scala features such as path-dependent, intersection, and union types. We prove type soundness and the immutability guarantee provided by our calculus
Unheard Voices: Adoption Narratives of Same-Sex Male Couples
This is the first legal study in Canada on same-sex adoption law, adoption administrative practice, and the social realities of parenting as experienced specifically by same-sex male couples. This paper identifies a gap in existing legal literature and jurisprudence with respect to the adoption narratives of same-sex male couples. Next, focusing on the province of Québec, it offers insight into how legal rules and social expectations construct families headed by such couples. It also highlights how, post-adoption, same-sex male couples conceive of their own families in a legal and social environment that continues to privilege heterosexual family models. Contradictorily, by entering societal discourse as committed couples who create families, these men reproduce aspects of an idealized heterosexual, two-parent family model
Test-beam and simulation studies for the CLICTD technology demonstrator -- a monolithic CMOS pixel sensor with a small collection diode
The CLIC Tracker Detector (CLICTD) is a monolithic pixel sensor featuring
pixels of 30um x 37.5um and a small collection diode. The sensor is fabricated
in a 180 nm CMOS imaging process, using two different pixel flavours: the first
with a continuous n-type implant for full lateral depletion, and the second
with a segmentation in the n-type implant for accelerated charge collection.
Moreover, CLICTD features an innovative sub-pixel segmentation scheme that
allows the digital footprint to be reduced while maintaining a small sub-pixel
pitch. In this contribution, test-beam measurements for the pixel flavour with
the segmented n-implant are presented. The performance is evaluated in terms of
time and spatial resolution as well as efficiency. Furthermore, the test-beam
data is compared to simulation studies using a combination of 3D TCAD and Monte
Carlo simulation tools
Neoliberalism and Social Justice in the City: An Examination of Postwar Urban Development in Colombo, Sri Lanka
Neoliberal urban development has witnessed tremendous changes in urban landscapes around the world. It has also contributed to increasing inequalities and social injustices in these changing urban landscapes. This study is an attempt to explore how neoliberal urban processes and accumulation by dispossession have shaped the new and rapid urban (re)development drive in Sri Lanka that is dramatically restructuring Colomboâs landscape and the socio-economic positions of its people. The post-war Sri Lankan governmentsâ initiation of a complete transformation and reinvention of the cityâs built environmentâthrough large-scale market-oriented infrastructural developments that would attract financial direct investments and promote public-private partnershipsâhas also necessitated the removal of âslums and shantiesâ that are home to Colomboâs poor working class population.
The study assumes significance in the context of a country that is attempting to rebuild itself after a three-decade long civil war that ended in 2009. The state-led accelerated and expansive urban renewal program serves to meet Sri Lankaâs postwar economic and political vision of fully integrating itself into the global economy by transforming Colombo into a âworld class cityâ and âmodern megapolisâ. Framed within a comprehensive theoretical framework and based on an extensive analysis of archival and secondary data, this study maps out the socio-economic, political, and spatial processes that underlie Colomboâs urban renewal agenda and its related class implications. I believe this study has the potential to contribute to the body of knowledge on the social injustices related to neoliberal urban development around the world and to be the basis of further urban sociological research
