Our idea of the First World War is still dominated by the trench warfare at the Somme, at Ypres or other famous war scenes of the Western Front. Ernst Jünger, Erich Maria Remarque and the published memories of hundreds of others who fought at this part of the war have painted our picture: trenches, tanks, shock troops, the bone mills and the Stahlgewitter shape this narration.
