    Quantum Liouville theory in the background field formalism I. Compact Riemann surfaces

    Using Polyakov's functional integral approach with the Liouville action functional defined in \cite{ZT2} and \cite{LTT}, we formulate quantum Liouville theory on a compact Riemann surface X of genus g > 1. For the partition function and for the correlation functions with the stress-energy tensor components , we describe Feynman rules in the background field formalism by expanding corresponding functional integrals around a classical solution - the hyperbolic metric on X. Extending analysis in \cite{LT1,LT2,LT-Varenna,LT3}, we define the regularization scheme for any choice of global coordinate on X, and for Schottky and quasi-Fuchsian global coordinates we rigorously prove that one- and two-point correlation functions satisfy conformal Ward identities in all orders of the perturbation theory. Obtained results are interpreted in terms of complex geometry of the projective line bundle \cE_{c}=\lambda_{H}^{c/2} over the moduli space Mg\mathfrak{M}_{g}, where c is the central charge and λH\lambda_{H} is the Hodge line bundle, and provide Friedan-Shenker \cite{FS} complex geometry approach to CFT with the first non-trivial example besides rational models.Comment: 67 pages, 4 figures (Typos corrected as in the published version

    Propagators and WKB-exactness in the plane wave limit of AdSxS

    Green functions for the scalar, spinor and vector fields in a plane wave geometry arising as a Penrose limit of AdS×SAdS\times S are obtained. The Schwinger-DeWitt technique directly gives the results in the plane wave background, which turns out to be WKB-exact. Therefore the structural similarity with flat space results is unveiled. In addition, based on the local character of the Penrose limit, it is claimed that for getting the correct propagators in the limit one can rely on the first terms of the direct geodesic contribution in the Schwinger-DeWitt expansion of the original propagators . This is explicitly shown for the Einstein Static Universe, which has the same Penrose limit as AdS×SAdS\times S with equal radii, and for a number of other illustrative cases.Comment: 18 pages, late

    Decoherence and CPT Violation in a Stringy Model of Space-Time Foam

    I discuss a model inspired from the string/brane framework, in which our Universe is represented as a three brane, propagating in a bulk space time punctured by D0-brane (D-particle) defects. As the D3-brane world moves in the bulk, the D-particles cross it, and from an effective observer on D3 the situation looks like a ``space-time foam'' with the defects ``flashing'' on and off (``D-particle foam''). The open strings, with their ends attached on the brane, which represent matter in this scenario, can interact with the D-particles on the D3-brane universe in a topologically non-trivial manner, involving splitting and capture of the strings by the D0-brane defects. Such processes are described by logarithmic conformal field theories on the world-sheet. Physically, they result in effective decoherence of the string matter on the D3 brane, and as a result, of CPT Violation, but of a type that implies an ill-defined nature of the effective CPT operator. Due to electric charge conservation, only electrically neutral (string) matter can exhibit such interactions with the D-particle foam. This may have unique, experimentally detectable, consequences for electrically-neutral entangled quantum matter states on the brane world, in particular the modification of the pertinent EPR Correlation of neutral mesons in a meson factory.Comment: 41 pages Latex, five eps figures incorporated.
