Capillary origami: spontaneous wrapping of a droplet with an elastic sheet
The interaction between elasticity and capillarity is used to produce three
dimensional structures, through the wrapping of a liquid droplet by a planar
sheet. The final encapsulated 3D shape is controlled by tayloring the initial
geometry of the flat membrane. A 2D model shows the evolution of open sheets to
closed structures and predicts a critical length scale below which
encapsulation cannot occur, which is verified experimentally. This {\it
elastocapillary length} is found to depend on the thickness as , a
scaling favorable to miniaturization which suggests a new way of mass
production of 3D micro- or nano-scale objects.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
A discontinuous Galerkin approach for atmospheric flows with implicit condensation
We present a discontinuous Galerkin method for moist atmospheric dynamics, with and without warm rain. By considering a combined density for water vapour and cloud water, we avoid the need to model and compute a source term for condensation. We recover the vapour and cloud densities by solving a pointwise non-linear problem each time step. Consequently, we enforce the requirement for the water vapour not to be supersaturated implicitly. Together with an explicit time-stepping scheme, the method is highly parallelisable and can utilise high-performance computing hardware. Furthermore, the discretisation works on structured and unstructured meshes in two and three spatial dimensions. We illustrate the performance of our approach using several test cases in two and three spatial dimensions. In the case of a smooth, exact solution, we illustrate the optimal higher-order convergence rates of the method.</p
Exploiting the sensitivity of two satellite cloud height retrievals to cloud vertical distribution
This work presents a study on the sensitivity of two satellite cloud height
retrievals to cloud vertical distribution. The difference in sensitivity is
exploited by relating the difference in the retrieved cloud heights to cloud
vertical extent. The two cloud height retrievals, performed within the Freie
UniversitÀt Berlin AATSR MERIS Cloud (FAME-C) algorithm, are based on
independent measurements and different retrieval techniques. First, cloud top
temperature (CTT) is retrieved from Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer
(AATSR) measurements in the thermal infrared. Second, cloud top pressure (CTP)
is retrieved from Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) measurements
in the oxygen-A absorption band. Both CTT and CTP are converted to cloud top
height (CTH) using atmospheric profiles from a numerical weather prediction
model. A sensitivity study using radiative transfer simulations in the near-
infrared and thermal infrared were performed to demonstrate the larger impact
of the assumed cloud vertical extinction profile on MERIS than on AATSR top-
of-atmosphere measurements. The difference in retrieved CTH (ÎCTH) from AATSR
and MERIS are related to cloud vertical extent (CVE) as observed by ground-
based lidar and radar at three ARM sites. To increase the impact of the cloud
vertical extinction profile on the MERIS-CTP retrievals, single-layer and
geometrically thin clouds are assumed in the forward model. The results of the
comparison to the ground-based observations were separated into single-layer
and multi-layer cloud cases. Analogous to previous findings, the MERIS-CTP
retrievals appear to be close to pressure levels in the middle of the cloud.
Assuming a linear relationship, the ÎCTH multiplied by 2.5 gives an estimate
on the CVE for single-layer clouds. The relationship is weaker for multi-layer
clouds. Due to large variations of cloud vertical extinction profiles
occurring in nature, a quantitative estimate of the cloud vertical extent is
accompanied with large uncertainties. Yet, estimates of the CVE can contribute
to the characterization of a cloudy scene. To demonstrate the plausibility of
the approach, an estimate of the CVE was applied to a case study. In light of
the follow-up mission Sentinel-3 with AATSR and MERIS like instruments, Sea
and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) and (Ocean and Land Colour
Instrument) OLCI, respectively, for which the FAME-C algorithm can be easily
adapted, a more accurate estimate of the CVE can be expected. OLCI will have
three channels in the oxygen-A absorption band, thus providing more pieces of
information on the cloud vertical extinction profile
An Artificially Lattice Mismatched Graphene/Metal Interface: Graphene/Ni/Ir(111)
We report the structural and electronic properties of an artificial
graphene/Ni(111) system obtained by the intercalation of a monoatomic layer of
Ni in graphene/Ir(111). Upon intercalation, Ni grows epitaxially on Ir(111),
resulting in a lattice mismatched graphene/Ni system. By performing Scanning
Tunneling Microscopy (STM) measurements and Density Functional Theory (DFT)
calculations, we show that the intercalated Ni layer leads to a pronounced
buckling of the graphene film. At the same time an enhanced interaction is
measured by Angle-Resolved Photo-Emission Spectroscopy (ARPES), showing a clear
transition from a nearly-undisturbed to a strongly-hybridized graphene
-band. A comparison of the intercalation-like graphene system with flat
graphene on bulk Ni(111), and mildly corrugated graphene on Ir(111), allows to
disentangle the two key properties which lead to the observed increased
interaction, namely lattice matching and electronic interaction. Although the
latter determines the strength of the hybridization, we find an important
influence of the local carbon configuration resulting from the lattice
mismatch.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
The Wolf effect and the Redshift of Quasars
We consider a simple model, based on currently accepted models for active
galactic nuclei, for a quasi-stellar object (QSO or ``quasar'') and examine the
influence that correlation- induced spectral changes (``The Wolf Effect'') may
have upon the redshifts of the optical emission lines.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. To be published in J. European Optical Soc. A:

AEROSOL OPTICAL DEPTH FROM SPECTRAL DIRECT NORMAL IRRADIANCE MEASUREMENTS IN MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY
Aerosols are liquid or solid particles with diameters between 2.5 and 10 µm suspended in the lower layers of the atmosphere. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is a relevant parameter that quantifies their concentration in the atmosphere. It is usually estimated from sun photometer measurements at specific wavelengths. The objective of this work is to implement a simple inversion algorithm to retrieve AOD at six different wavelengths (340, 380, 440, 500, 675 and 870 nm) using solar direct normal spectral irradiance ground measurements from a relatively low cost collimated spectroradiometer (EKO MS-711) at a low-altitude site in Montevideo, Uruguay. The results obtained are compared with AERONET products for the same site, including AOD and Angström coefficient. The results of AOD for all wavelengths show a consistent negative mean bias (MBD, unitless), between −0.005 and −0.015, and dispersion (RMSD, unitless) between 0.021 and 0.015 (to be compared to a mean reference AOD of 0.097). These metrics improve considerably for very clear days, MBD up to ± 0.001 and RMSD under 0.007 (to be compared to a mean reference AOD of 0.058). These results are considered to be a first step in implementing the methodology and acquiring local knowledge about AOD retrievals using relatively simple instrumentation
Capillary origami
International audienceThe hairs of a wet dog rushing out from a pond assemble into bundles; this is a common example of the effect of capillary forces on flexible structures. From a practical point of the deformation and adhesion of compliant structures induced by interfacial forces may lead to disastrous effects in mechanical microsystems
