    (Re)engaging the Body in Being & Becoming Teachers of Writers

    This article offers a framework by which writing teacher educators can offer secondary preservice teachers a way to engage lived writing histories with pedagogical content knowledge of writing (PCKW) through embodied practices. Building on antiracist creative writing scholarship and genre theory, two practices from a semester-long course (Teaching Writers) are offered that acknowledge the still-evolving implications of writing education during the pandemic on preservice teachersā€™ writing development and the writing development of high school students, some of whom spent the past three years only writing physically isolated. The author offers initial observations about the ways she sees embodied PCKW as a practice that can support and sustain preservice teachers across their writing and teaching of writers lifespan(s)

    Improving Dynamic Decision Making Through Training and Self-Reflection

    The modern business environment requires managers to make effective decisions in a dynamic and uncertain world. How can such dynamic decision making (DDM) improve? The current study investigated the effects of brief training aimed at improving DDM skills in a virtual DDM task. The training addressed the DDM process, stressed the importance of self-reflection in DDM, and provided 3 self-reflective questions to guide participants during the task. Additionally, we explored whether participants low or high in self-reflection would perform better in the task and whether participants low or high in self-reflection would benefit more from the training. The study also explored possible strategic differences between participants related to training and self-reflection. Participants were 68 graduate business students. They individually managed a computer-simulated chocolate production company called CHOCO FINE and answered surveys to assess self-reflection and demographics. Training in DDM led to better performance, including the ability to solve initial problems more successfully and to make appropriate adjustments to market changes. Participantsā€™ self-reflection scores also predicted performance in this virtual business company. High self-reflection was also related to more consistency in planning and decision making. Participants low in self-reflection benefited the most from training. Organizations could use DDM training to establish and promote a culture that values self-reflective decision making

    K-12 Writing Teachersā€™ Careerspan Development: Participatory Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Writing

    This narrative grounded theory study examines 19 US Kā€“12 teachersā€™ development of pedagogical content knowledge of writing (PCKW) across their careers. Building on writing pedagogies and career cycle theories, we invited writing teachers to tell stories of critical experiences that contributed to their development. Findings indicate that teachersā€™ understanding of writing, being writers, and teaching writers were propelled by various critical experiences--both personal and professional. Our model shows that these experiences prompted teachers to engage in participatory PCKW to cultivate development. Implications are that writing teachers need communities of practice, mentors, and ongoing participatory engagements to sustain process pedagogies

    Self-Control, Self-Regulation, and Doping in Sport: A Test of the Strength-Energy Model

    We applied the strength-energy model of self-control to understand the relationship between self-control and young athletesā€™ behavioral responses to taking illegal performance-enhancing substances, or ā€œdoping.ā€ Measures of trait self-control, attitude and intention toward doping, intention toward, and adherence to, doping-avoidant behaviors, and the prevention of unintended doping behaviors were administered to 410 young Australian athletes. Participants also completed a ā€œlollipopā€ decision-making protocol that simulated avoidance of unintended doping. Hierarchical linear multiple regression analyses revealed that self-control was negatively associated with doping attitude and intention, and positively associated with the intention and adherence to doping-avoidant behaviors, and refusal to take or eat the unfamiliar candy offered in the ā€œlollipopā€ protocol. Consistent with the strength-energy model, athletes with low self-control were more likely to have heightened attitude and intention toward doping, and reduced intention, behavioral adherence, and awareness of doping avoidance

    T-Cell Responses to the M3 Immune Evasion Protein of Murid Gammaherpesvirus 68 Are Partially Protective and Induced with Lytic Antigen Kinetics

    DNA vaccination with the M3 gene, encoding an immune evasion molecule expressed during both the acute lytic and persistent phases of murid gammaherpesvirus 68 infection, yielded a significantly lower titer of virus in the lung than controls. The protection seen was dependent on T cells, and we mapped an epitope recognized by CD8 T cells. The immune response to this epitope follows the same kinetics as lytic cycle antigens, despite the fact that this gene is expressed in both lytic and persistent stages of infection. This has important implications for our understanding of T-cell responses to putative latency-associated gammaherpesvirus proteins and how vaccination may improve control of these viruses

    Using an epiphytic moss to identify previously unknown sources of atmospheric cadmium pollution

    Urban networks of air-quality monitors are often too widely spaced to identify sources of air pollutants, especially if they do not disperse far from emission sources. The objectives of this study were to test the use of moss bioindicators to develop a fine-scale map of atmospherically-derived cadmium and to identify the sources of cadmium in a complex urban setting.We collected 346 samples of the moss Orthotrichum lyellii from deciduous trees in December, 2013 using a modified randomized grid-based sampling strategy across Portland, Oregon.We estimated a spatial linear model of moss cadmium levels and predicted cadmium on a 50 m grid across the city. Cadmium levels in moss were positively correlated with proximity to two stained-glass manufacturers, proximity to the Oregonā€“ Washington border, and percent industrial land in a 500 m buffer, and negatively correlated with percent residential land in a 500 m buffer. The maps showed very high concentrations of cadmium around the two stained-glass manufacturers, neither of which were known to environmental regulators as cadmium emitters. In addition, in response to our findings, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality placed an instrumental monitor 120 m from the larger stained-glass manufacturer in October, 2015. The monthly average atmospheric cadmium concentration was 29.4 ng/m3,which is 49 times higher than Oregon\u27s benchmark of 0.6 ng/m3, and high enough to pose a health risk from even short-term exposure. Both stained-glass manufacturers voluntarily stopped using cadmium after the monitoring results were made public, and the monthly average cadmium levels precipitously dropped to 1.1 ng/m3 for stained-glass manufacturer #1 and 0.67 ng/m3 for stained-glass manufacturer #2

    'Reaching the hard to reach' - lessons learned from the VCS (voluntary and community Sector). A qualitative study.

    Background The notion 'hard to reach' is a contested and ambiguous term that is commonly used within the spheres of social care and health, especially in discourse around health and social inequalities. There is a need to address health inequalities and to engage in services the marginalized and socially excluded sectors of society. Methods This paper describes a pilot study involving interviews with representatives from eight Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) organisations . The purpose of the study was to explore the notion of 'hard to reach' and perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to accessing services for 'hard to reach' groups from a voluntary and community sector perspective. Results The 'hard to reach' may include drug users, people living with HIV, people from sexual minority communities, asylum seekers, refugees, people from black and ethnic minority communities, and homeless people although defining the notion of the 'hard to reach' is not straight forward. It may be that certain groups resist engaging in treatment services and are deemed hard to reach by a particular service or from a societal stance. There are a number of potential barriers for people who may try and access services, including people having bad experiences in the past; location and opening times of services and how services are funded and managed. A number of areas of commonality are found in terms of how access to services for 'hard to reach' individuals and groups could be improved including: respectful treatment of service users, establishing trust with service users, offering service flexibility, partnership working with other organisations and harnessing service user involvement. Conclusions: If health services are to engage with groups that are deemed 'hard to reach' and marginalised from mainstream health services, the experiences and practices for engagement from within the VCS may serve as useful lessons for service improvement for statutory health services

    Intervention to Reduce Adverse Outcomes among Older Adults Discharged from Skilled Nursing Facilities to Home

    Background: Older adults may be at risk for adverse outcomes after discharge from skilled nursing facilities (SNF), but little research has focused on this transition. Objective: To assess the impact of an alert system on the rates of adverse outcomes among older adults discharged from SNFs to home. Methods: Within a multispecialty group practice, we tracked 30-day re-hospitalizations after SNF discharges during an intervention that provided discharge alerts to primary care physicians. We compared them to discharges from the pre-intervention period matched on age, gender and SNF. For the first 100 intervention discharges and their matches, we performed chart reviews to identify adverse drug events (ADEs). Multivariate analyses controlled for age, gender and intervention status. Results: We matched 313 intervention SNF discharges to 313 previous discharges. There was a slight reduction in the rate of 30-day re-hospitalization (30% vs. 31%) adjusted. Within the ADE study, 30% of the discharges during the intervention period and 30% of matched discharges had ADEs within 45 days. Among the 83 ADEs identified, 28% were deemed preventable; 69% resulted in symptom duration more than one day; 69% occurred within the first 14 days after discharge. This was a highly vulnerable population: mean age 82.5 (standard deviation (SD) 6.7); mean number of prescribed medications 11.9 (SD 8); 17% had Charlson Comorbidity Scores of ā‰„4. Common clinical conditions included myocardial infarction (24%), heart failure (22%), COPD (23%), and major depression (28%). Patients with scores of ā‰„4 were more likely to experience an ADE than those with lower scores (adjusted OR 2.5 (CI 1.2, 5.5), RD 0.21). Conclusion: Simply providing alerts when these vulnerable patients are discharged from SNFs is not sufficient to lower rates of adverse outcomes. Further research is required to track trajectories and identify additional points for interventions
