    Three design approaches to cell-level protection were developed, fabricated, and tested. These systems are referred to as the single-cell protector (SCP), multiplexed-cell protector(MCP). To evaluate the systems 18-cell battery packs without cell level control were subjected to cycle life test. A total of five batteries were subjected to simulate synchronous orbit cycling at 40% depth of discharge at 22C. Batteries without cell-level protection failed between 345 and 255 cycles. Cell failure in the cell level protected batteries occurred between 412 and 540. It was determined that the cell-level monitoring and protection is necessary to attain the long cycle life of a AgZn battery. The best method of providing control and protection of the AgZn cells depends on the specific application and capability of the user

    A device is described for counting aerosols and sorting them according to either size, mass or energy. The component parts are an accelerator, a capacitor sensor and a readout. The accelerator is a means for accelerating the aerosols toward the face of the capacitor sensor with such force that they partially penetrate the capacitor sensor, momentarily discharging it. The readout device is a means for counting the number of discharges of the capacitor sensor and measuring the amplitudes of these different discharges. The aerosols are accelerated by the accelerator in the direction of the metal layer with such force that they penetrate the metal and damage the oxide layers, thereby allowing the electrical charge on the capacitor to discharge through the damaged region. Each incident aerosol initiates a discharge path through the capacitor in such a fashion as to vaporize the conducting path. Once the discharge action is complete, the low resistance path no longer exists between the two capacitor plates and the capacitor is again able to accept a charge. The active area of the capacitor is reduced in size by the damaged area each time a discharge occurs

    Development of single cell protectors for sealed silver-zinc cells, phase 1

    A single cell protector (SCP) assembly capable of protecting a single silver-zinc (Ag Zn) battery cell was designed, fabricated, and tested. The SCP provides cell-level protection against overcharge and overdischarge by a bypass circuit. The bypass circuit consists of a magnetic-latching relay that is controlled by the high and low-voltage limit comparators. Although designed specifically for secondary Ag-Zn cells, the SCP is flexible enough to be adapted to other rechargeable cells. Eighteen SCPs were used in life testing of an 18-cell battery. The cells were sealed Ag-Zn system with inorganic separators. For comparison, another 18-cell battery was subjected to identical life test conditions, but with battery-level protection rather than cell-level. An alternative approach to the SCP design in the form of a microprocessor-based system was conceptually designed. The comparison of SCP and microprocessor approaches is also presented and a preferred approach for Ag-Zn battery protection is discussed

    The colour-magnitude relations of ClJ1226.9+3332, a massive cluster of galaxies at z=0.89

    (Abridged) The colour-magnitude relations of one of the most massive, high redshift clusters of galaxies known have been studied. Photometry has been measured in the V, R, I, z, F606W, F814W, J and K bands to a depth of K*+2.5 and spectroscopy confirms 27 K band selected cluster members. The V-K colours are equivalent to a rest-frame colour of ~2700A-J, and provide a very sensitive measure of star-formation activity. HST ACS imaging has been used to morphologically classify the galaxies. The cluster has a low early-type fraction compared to nearby clusters, with only 33% of the cluster members having types E or S0. The early-type member galaxies form a clear red-sequence in all colours. The scatter and slope of the relations show no evolution compared to the equivalent Coma cluster relations, suggesting the stellar populations are already very old. The normalisation of the relations has been compared to models based on synthetic stellar populations, and are most consistent with stellar populations forming at z>3. Some late-type galaxies were found to lie on the red-sequence, suggesting that they have very similar stellar populations to the early-types. These results present a picture of a cluster in which the early-type galaxies are all old, but in which there must be future morphological transformation of galaxies to match the early-type fraction of nearby clusters. In order to preserve the tight colour-magnitude relation of early-types seen in nearby clusters, the late-type galaxies must transform their colours, through the cessation of star-formation, before the morphological transformation occurs.     Crosshole Sonic Logging Integrity Testing for the New Cooper River Bridge

    A new cable-stayed bridge for US Highway 17 is currently under construction over the Cooper River between Mount Pleasant and Charleston, South Carolina. This new bridge will replace two existing structures, the Silas Pearlman and the Grace Memorial Bridges. When completed, the new bridge will have a 1,546 feet span over the Cooper River, making this bridge the longest cable-stayed span in North America. The foundations for this replacement bridge are drilled shafts embedded within the Cooper Marl formation, which underlies the near surface lower coastal plain soil deposits. Depending on the location within the bridge structure, the drilled shafts range from 1.07m (3.5ft) to 3.66m (12ft) in diameter with embedments of up to 56.4m (185ft) within the Cooper Marl. The deepest drilled shafts extend to depths of 71.3m (234ft) from mean sea level (MSL). A total of 410 drilled shafts will be used as the foundations for the new bridge. At of the time of submittal of this publication, a total of 384 of these drilled shafts were installed over a time period ranging fromMarch 2002 to September 2003. The design of the bridge left little redundancy in the drilled shaft foundations. Therefore, integrity testing of the drilled shafts, especially at critical areas such as the main bridge piers, was of major importance to verify that these foundations were capable of supporting the bridge superstructure. Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) was selected as the primary testing method to evaluate drilled shaft integrity. This paper presents the results of the drilled shaft CSL integrity testing and discusses the findings of the testing and lessons learned over the course of drilled shaft installation

    Daily Sleep Quality is Associated with Daily Cognition in Late-Life

    Background: Older adults often face sleep disturbance or cognitive decline that goes beyond the scope of normal aging. The present study examined the relationship between self-reported sleep quality and self-reported daytime attention in a community-dwelling sample of older men at the between-persons and within-persons levels of association. Methods: Thirty-eight participants (M age =75.36 years, SD age =7.51 years, range=66-90 years) completed a twice-daily sleep diary for one week. Sleep quality and attention were assessed using a single-item 0-10 rating scales from the morning diary (“How was the quality of your sleep last night?”) and from the evening diary (“How was your attention today?”). A two-level multilevel model was parameterized with days nested within individuals to examine whether nightly sleep quality predicts an individual’s daily attention rating. Results: A multilevel model predicting self-reported attention revealed (1) older individuals who reported better sleep quality reported having better daily attention [Beta=0.64, t(248.15)=10.12, p\u3c0.001] and (2) following a day of above-average sleep quality, older individuals experienced above-average attention [Beta=0.16, t(259.79)=2.75, p=.006]. Conclusion: Not only was overall sleep quality associated with self-reported attention, but a good night\u27s sleep was associated with better self-reported next-day attention. Results point to the potential importance of fluctuations in sleep quality for daytime functioning. Interventions aimed at improving nightly sleep consistency may be worth exploring as methods to improve daytime cognitive functioning in older adults.
