    Genetic design of multivariable control systems

    In the real world there are three types of multivariable control systems. The first one is when the number of inputs is equal to the number of the outputs, this type of multivariable control system is defined as a squared multivariable control system and the main type of controller designed is a decoupling controller which minimizes interactions and gives good set-point tracking. The second type of multivariable control system is where the number of inputs is greater than the number of the outputs, for this type of system the main controller designed is a fail-safe controller. This controller remains stable if a sub-set of actuator fail. The third type of multivariable control system is the number of outputs is greater than the number of inputs, for this type of system the main controller designed is an override control system. This controller only controls a sub-set of outputs based on a lowest wins control strategy. All the three types of multivariable control systems are included in this thesis. In this thesis the design of multivariable decoupling control, multivariable fail-safe control and multivariable override control as considered. The invention of evolutionary computing techniques has changed the design philosophy for control system design. Rather than using conventional techniques such as Nyquest plots or root-loci control systems can be designed using evolutionally algorithm. Such algorithms evolve solutions using cost functions and optimization. There are a variety of system performance indicators such as integral squared error operator has been used as cost functions to design controllers using such algorithms. The design of both fail-safe and override multivariable controllers is a difficult problem and there are very few analytical design methods for such controllers. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to use the genetic algorithms to involve both fail-safe and override controller multivariable controllers, such that they perform well in the time-domain

    On the discovery of continuous truth: a semi-supervised approach with partial ground truths

    In many applications, the information regarding to the same object can be collected from multiple sources. However, these multi-source data are not reported consistently. In the light of this challenge, truth discovery is emerged to identify truth for each object from multi-source data. Most existing truth discovery methods assume that ground truths are completely unknown, and they focus on the exploration of unsupervised approaches to jointly estimate object truths and source reliabilities. However, in many real world applications, a set of ground truths could be partially available. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised truth discovery framework to estimate continuous object truths. With the help of ground truths, even a small amount, the accuracy of truth discovery can be improved. We formulate the semi-supervised truth discovery problem as an optimization task where object truths and source reliabilities are modeled as variables. The ground truths are modeled as a regularization term and its contribution to the source weight estimation can be controlled by a parameter. The experiments show that the proposed method is more accurate and efficient than the existing truth discovery methods

    Creation and suppression of point defects through a kick-out substitution process of Fe in InP

    Indium antisite defect In P-related photoluminescence has been observed in Fe-diffused semi-insulating (SI) InP. Compared to annealed undoped or Fe-predoped SI InP, there are fewer defects in SI InP obtained by long-duration, high-temperature Fe diffusion. The suppression of the formation of point defects in Fe-diffused SI InP can be explained in terms of the complete occupation by Fe at indium vacancy. The In P defect is enhanced by the indium interstitial that is caused by the kick out of In and the substitution at the indium site of Fe in the diffusion process. Through these Fe-diffusion results, the nature of the defects in annealed undoped SI InP is better understood. Β© 2002 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

    Enterobacter nimipressuralis as a cause of pseudobacteremia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The clinical significance of the <it>Enterobacter nimipressuralis </it>as human pathogens remains unclear.</p> <p>Case presentations</p> <p>The microbiologic culture monitoring system of sterile body fluids revealed on an episode of <it>Enterobacter cloacae </it>and <it>Enterobacter amnigenus </it>in blood culture results on the same day; the antibiotic sensitivity and MIC were nearly the same for both species. First patient was a healthy woman with postmenopausal syndrome, while second patient with herpes zoster. Both patients had febrile sensations without signs of bacteremia. <it>E. amnigenus </it>was also cultured from the unused package of salined cotton in the container through epidemiologic investigation. The cultured <it>Enterobacter </it>species were all identified as <it>E. nimipressuralis </it>through <it>hsp60 </it>gene sequencing and infrequent-restriction-site PCR (IRS-PCR).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>When an unusual microorganisms such as <it>E. nimipressuralis </it>is isolated from blood of a patient with no clinical signs of sepsis, a pseudobacteremia should be suspected. When the antibiogram and MIC test results of bacterial cultures from two or more patients are nearly the same, although the species involved may appear different, it may be necessary to prove that they are the same species through molecular methods. The microbiologic cultures monitoring system will probably help to detect pseudobacteremia and other pseudo infections through reliable and fast identification.</p

    An activity-based integrated land-use transport model for urban spatial distribution simulation

    This research develops an activity-based integrated land use/transport interaction model based on the concepts – activities (mainly, households and employment activities), activity location and relocation for Chinese regions. It consists of a residential and employment location sub-model, a transport sub-model and an implicit real estate rent adjustment sub-model. The model is developed to model the urban activity distribution evolution, predict urban spatial development trends and examine various planning decision implications. It spatially distributes household and employment activity change of a study area by zone based on the current activity distribution, land use policies and the accessibilities of the zones. The model is subsequently calibrated to predict the distribution of households and employment activities in Beijing metropolitan area in 2025. Model results show that the resident and employment densities are still high in central Beijing in 2025, and most zones’ resident densities are higher than their employment densities. However, there is also significant population density increase along the 6th ring road, indicating the relocation trend of the residents and businesses to the outskirts. This is consistent with the government objectives to decentralize activities within the central urban area. The paper also suggests that the model should be used mainly in examining the possible differences arising from the adoption of different policies though predicting future of a city distribution proves feasible

    Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness among Children Aged 6 to 59 Months in Southern China

    In China the protective effect of seasonal influenza vaccine has only been assessed in controlled clinical trials and proven to be highly effective. However, the post-licensure effectiveness of influenza vaccine has not been examined. In our study all influenza cases from the 19 surveillance sites in Guangzhou were laboratory confirmed during 2009 and 2010. Controls were randomly selected from children aged 6 to 59 months in the Children's Expanded Programmed Immunization Administrative Computerized System. 2529 cases and 4539 controls were finally enrolled. After adjusting for gender, age and area of residence, the vaccine effectiveness of full vaccination was 51.79% and 57.78% in the 2009 and 2010 influenza season, respectively. Partial vaccination provided 39.38% and 35.98% protection to children aged 24 to 59 months in 2009 and 2010, respectively, and no protective effect was observed among younger children. Full vaccination is highly protective and partial vaccination is protective for older children. Influenza vaccination in general should be encouraged, and full vaccination should be particularly encouraged because its protective effect is much stronger than that of partial vaccination

    Qualitative and Quantitative Detection of Chlamydophila pneumoniae DNA in Cerebrospinal Fluid from Multiple Sclerosis Patients and Controls

    A standardized molecular test for the detection of Chlamydophila pneumoniae DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) would assist the further assessment of the association of C. pneumoniae with multiple sclerosis (MS). We developed and validated a qualitative colorimetric microtiter plate-based PCR assay (PCR-EIA) and a real-time quantitative PCR assay (TaqMan) for detection of C. pneumoniae DNA in CSF specimens from MS patients and controls. Compared to a touchdown nested-PCR assay, the sensitivity, specificity, and concordance of the PCR-EIA assay were 88.5%, 93.2%, and 90.5%, respectively, on a total of 137 CSF specimens. PCR-EIA presented a significantly higher sensitivity in MS patients (pβ€Š=β€Š0.008) and a higher specificity in other neurological diseases (pβ€Š=β€Š0.018). Test reproducibility of the PCR-EIA assay was statistically related to the volumes of extract DNA included in the test (pβ€Š=β€Š0.033); a high volume, which was equivalent to 100 Β΅l of CSF per reaction, yielded a concordance of 96.8% between two medical technologists running the test at different times. The TaqMan quantitative PCR assay detected 26 of 63 (41.3%) of positive CSF specimens that tested positive by both PCR-EIA and nested-PCR qualitative assays. None of the CSF specimens that were negative by the two qualitative PCR methods were detected by the TaqMan quantitative PCR. The PCR-EIA assay detected a minimum of 25 copies/ml C. pneumoniae DNA in plasmid-spiked CSF, which was at least 10 times more sensitive than TaqMan. These data indicated that the PCR-EIA assay possessed a sensitivity that was equal to the nested-PCR procedures for the detection of C. pneumoniae DNA in CSF. The TaqMan system may not be sensitive enough for diagnostic purposes due to the low C. pneumoniae copies existing in the majority of CSF specimens from MS patients
