Effect of a Liner Material on the Formation of the Wrapping ExplosivelyFormed Penetrator

    No full text
The wrapping explosively-formed penetrator is a new approach to shape change based on a pre-folded double liner: outer liner of higher density forming the shell and the inner liner of lower density forming the core. The penetrator can not only penetrate the armor but can form lots of fragments behind the target when it attacks light armored objects. The fragments generated by the lateral enhanced effect are able to destroy crew and equipment improving the integrated damage outcome. The shape and materials of the core and shell are the main factors controlling the penetrability and formation of fragments. The effect of liner materials on penetration was studied. with AUTODYN analysis. The results show that the difference in the through-thickness velocities and the interface of the two liners are the main factors leading to the separation of the core and shell. Penetrator with an evident lateral enhanced effect could be helpful to choose appropriate liner materials. The feasibility of forming the penetrator with double liners is substantiated providing a reference for the selection of liner material.

High berberine yielding Phellodendron insulare Nak. lines were selected by aggregate cloning method and the antimicrobial activity of their extracts was assessed. The berberine producing cork tree lines were selected by adopting a colorimetric method. In all 300 high berberine producing lines were selected with a colorimetric reagent containing 5M HCl and H2O2 and established from dissociated cell aggregates. The crude extracts from these lines showed antibacterial activities against tested Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimulium, and Listeria monocytogenes. The cork tree extracts were found to be inhibitory to these test organisms. Further the antimicrobial activity of plant extracts was on par with the berberine isolated from the extracts from native cork trees. These results have potential for developing alternative plant products as antimicrobial substances for application in agriculture and food industry

Electronic Structure and Optical Properties of the Co-doped Anatase TiO2_{2} Studied from First Principles

The Co-doped anatase TiO2_{2}, a recently discovered room-temperature ferromagnetic insulator, has been studied by the first-principles calculations in the pseudo-potential plane-wave formalism within the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA), supplemented by the full-potential linear augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. Emphasis is placed on the dependence of its electronic structures and linear optical properties on the Co-doping concentration and oxygen vacancy in the system in order to pursue the origin of its ferromagnetism. In the case of substitutional doping of Co for Ti, our calculated results are well consistent with the experimental data, showing that Co is in its low spin state. Also, it is shown that the oxygen vacancy enhances the ferromagnetism and has larger effect on both the electronic structure and optical properties than the Co-doping concentration only.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

First long-term study of particle number size distributions and new particle formation events of regional aerosol in the North China Plain

Atmospheric particle number size distributions (size range 0.003–10 μm) were measured between March 2008 and August 2009 at Shangdianzi (SDZ), a rural research station in the North China Plain. These measurements were made in an attempt to better characterize the tropospheric background aerosol in Northern China. The mean particle number concentrations of the total particle, as well as the nucleation, Aitken, accumulation and coarse mode were determined to be 1.2 ± 0.9 × 104, 3.6 ± 7.9 × 103, 4.4 ± 3.4 × 103, 3.5 ± 2.8 × 103 and 2 ± 3 cm−3, respectively. A general finding was that the particle number concentration was higher during spring compared to the other seasons. The air mass origin had an important effect on the particle number concentration and new particle formation events. Air masses from northwest (i.e. inner Asia) favored the new particle formation events, while air masses from southeast showed the highest particle mass concentration. Significant diurnal variations in particle number were observed, which could be linked to new particle formation events, i.e. gas-to-particle conversion. During particle formation events, the number concentration of the nucleation mode rose up to maximum value of 104 cm−3. New particle formation events were observed on 36% of the effective measurement days. The formation rate ranged from 0.7 to 72.7 cm−3 s−1, with a mean value of 8.0 cm−3 s−1. The value of the nucleation mode growth rate was in the range of 0.3–14.5 nm h−1, with a mean value of 4.3 nm h−1. It was an essential observation that on many occasions the nucleation mode was able to grow into the size of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) within a matter of several hours. Furthermore, the new particle formation was regularly followed by a measurable increase in particle mass concentration and extinction coefficient, indicative of a high abundance of condensable vapors in the atmosphere under study

New exact solution of Dirac-Coulomb equation with exact boundary condition

It usually writes the boundary condition of the wave equation in the Coulomb field as a rough form without considering the size of the atomic nucleus. The rough expression brings on that the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation and the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential are divergent at the origin of the coordinates, also the virtual energies, when the nuclear charges number Z > 137, meaning the original solutions do not satisfy the conditions for determining solution. Any divergences of the wave functions also imply that the probability density of the meson or the electron would rapidly increase when they are closing to the atomic nucleus. What it predicts is not a truth that the atom in ground state would rapidly collapse to the neutron-like. We consider that the atomic nucleus has definite radius and write the exact boundary condition for the hydrogen and hydrogen-like atom, then newly solve the radial Dirac-Coulomb equation and obtain a new exact solution without any mathematical and physical difficulties. Unexpectedly, the K value constructed by Dirac is naturally written in the barrier width or the equivalent radius of the atomic nucleus in solving the Dirac equation with the exact boundary condition, and it is independent of the quantum energy. Without any divergent wave function and the virtual energies, we obtain a new formula of the energy levels that is different from the Dirac formula of the energy levels in the Coulomb field.Comment: 12 pages,no figure

Andreev Reflection in Ferromagnet/Superconductor/Ferromagnet Double Junction Systems

We present a theory of Andreev reflection in a ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet double junction system. The spin polarized quasiparticles penetrate to the superconductor in the range of penetration depth from the interface by the Andreev reflection. When the thickness of the superconductor is comparable to or smaller than the penetration depth, the spin polarized quasiparticles pass through the superconductor and therefore the electric current depends on the relative orientation of magnetizations of the ferromagnets. The dependences of the magnetoresistance on the thickness of the superconductor, temperature, the exchange field of the ferromagnets and the height of the interfacial barriers are analyzed. Our theory explains recent experimental results well.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

JMJD6 is a tumorigenic factor and therapeutic target in neuroblastoma

    Get PDF
Chromosome 17q21-ter is commonly gained in neuroblastoma, but it is unclear which gene in the region is important for tumorigenesis. The JMJD6 gene at 17q21-ter activates gene transcription. Here we show that JMJD6 forms protein complexes with N-Myc and BRD4, and is important for E2F2, N-Myc and c-Myc transcription. Knocking down JMJD6 reduces neuroblastoma cell proliferation and survival in vitro and tumor progression in mice, and high levels of JMJD6 expression in human neuroblastoma tissues independently predict poor patient prognosis. In addition, JMJD6 gene is associated with transcriptional super-enhancers. Combination therapy with the CDK7/super-enhancer inhibitor THZ1 and the histone deacetylase inhibitor panobinostat synergistically reduces JMJD6, E2F2, N-Myc, c-Myc expression, induces apoptosis in vitro and leads to neuroblastoma tumor regression in mice, which are significantly reversed by forced JMJD6 over-expression. Our findings therefore identify JMJD6 as a neuroblastoma tumorigenesis factor, and the combination therapy as a treatment strategy
