    A Case of Extensive Spinal Cysticercosis Involving the Whole Spinal Canal in a Patient with a History of Cerebral Cysticercosis

    Although cysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease affecting the central nervous system, spinal cysticercosis is rare. A rare form of spinal cysticercosis involving the whole spinal canal is presented. A 45-year-old Korean male had a history of intracranial cysticercosis and showed progressive paraparesis. Spinal magnetic resonance scan showed multiple cysts compressing the spinal cord from C1 to L1. Three different levels (C1-2, T1-3, and T11-L1) required operation. Histopathological examination confirmed cysticercosis. The patient improved markedly after surgery

    Relation between Obesity and Bone Mineral Density and Vertebral Fractures in Korean Postmenopausal Women

    PURPOSE: The traditional belief that obesity is protective against osteoporosis has been questioned. Recent epidemiologic studies show that body fat itself may be a risk factor for osteoporosis and bone fractures. Accumulating evidence suggests that metabolic syndrome and the individual components of metabolic syndrome such as hypertension, increased triglycerides, and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol are also risk factors for low bone mineral density. Using a cross sectional study design, we evaluated the associations between obesity or metabolic syndrome and bone mineral density (BMD) or vertebral fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 907 postmenopausal healthy female subjects, aged 60-79 years, were recruited from woman hospitals in Seoul, South Korea. BMD, vetebral fracture, bone markers, and body composition including body weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat, and waist circumference were measured. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, total calcium intake, and total energy intake, waist circumference was negatively related to BMD of all sites (lumbar BMD p = 0.037, all sites of femur BMD p < 0.001) whereas body weight was still positively related to BMD of all sites (p < 0.001). Percentage body fat and waist circumference were much higher in the fracture group than the non-fracture group (p = 0.0383, 0.082 respectively). Serum glucose levels were positively correlated to lumbar BMD (p = 0.016), femoral neck BMD (p = 0.0335), and femoral trochanter BMD (p = 0.0082). Serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) was positively related to femoral trochanter BMD (p = 0.0366) and was lower in the control group than the fracture group (p = 0.011). CONCLUSION: In contrast to the effect favorable body weight on bone mineral density, high percentage body fat and waist circumference are related to low BMD and a vertebral fracture.     A HISTORICAL APPROACH TO SYPHILIS INFECTION IN KOREA

    From the end of the 15th century, syphilis spread worldwide, posing a serious threat to public health. Venereal syphilis has been a major research topic, not only in clinical medicine but also in paleopathology, especially because it is a disease of questionable origin and of high prevalence until the discovery of antibiotics. Syphilis in history has been studied extensively in Europe and the Americas, though less so in Asia. In this review, based on extant historical documents and available paleopathological data, we pinpoint the introduction and trace the spread of venereal syphilis in Korea to the end of the 19th century. This review provides fundamental information that will be of great help to future research on pre-20th century syphilis in Korea

    Multivariate Statistical Analysis of Dyeing Wastewater Organic Matter Indicators

    Objectives Since 2016, TOC (Total Organic Carbon) has replaced COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) as an organic indicator for effluent wastewater quality standards. However, the distribution of organic substances by process in wastewater treatment facilities is not properly identified, making it difficult to secure stable treated wastewater quality. Therefore, in this study, we identified the correlation between TOC and existing organic matter indicators in raw wastewater, primary treated, secondary treated, and effluent wastewater for dyeing wastewater. Methods Samples for each process were collected twice a week, a total of 24 times, from a dyeing wastewater treatment plant located in Y-city, Gyeonggi-do, and organic pollutant indicators (TOC, CODCr, CODMn, BOD5) were analyzed. TOC was analyzed by the NPOC (non-purgeable organic carbon) method using TOC-VCHP (Shimadzu, Japan). Using the analysis results, the characteristics of organic pollutants in dyeing wastewater were analyzed. In addition, multivariate statistical analysis was performed using SPSS to analyze correlations between organic pollutant indicators and principal component analysis. Results and Discussion As a result of multivariate statistical analysis, TOC was inflowed at an average of 574.9 mg/L and treated at 58.2mg/L. In the case of CODCr, CODMn, and BOD5, the inflow was 1,644, 448.9, and 440.7 mg/L and was treated at 98.2, 39.7, and 10.8mg/L. When evaluated based on effluent water quality standards, all of them satisfied the Region III standards, but were discharged at a relatively high level compared to the TOC concentration of sewage treatment plants effluent. As a result of comparing correlations between organic matter indicators through Pearson correlation analysis, the inflow raw water shows a high positive correlation with TOC:TCODCr (r=0.720), TOC:TCODMn (r=0.636), and TOC:TBOD5 (r=0.302) showed low correlation. This is reason to be due to the fact that most organic substances in dyeing wastewater are non-degradable substances and have low biodegradability. As a result of principal component analysis of influent, primary treated, and final treated, three main components each (two for final treated) were extracted, with cumulative contribution rates of 80.1%, 83.2%, and 95.6%. Conclusion Because the properties of wastewater differ greatly depending on the type of leather and chemicals handled at the dyeing factory, the correlation between influent water was low, but the correlation between treated water and treated water was relatively high. The correlation between processes in wastewater treatment facilities also tended to increase toward later processes. It is believed that the above statistical analysis can be used as basic data for effective organic matter management

    Examining the links between burnout and suicidal ideation in diverse occupations

    IntroductionIt is uncertain whether burnout is associated with suicidal ideation among workers not in health care services. The aim of this study was to identify how burnout and suicidal ideation are linked among employees in various occupations and whether depression affects this link.MethodsThis cross-sectional study collected data from 12,083 participants aged 19–65 years from 25 companies and public institutions who underwent workplace mental health screening. Burnout and depression were assessed using both the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Suicidal ideation was assessed by a self-rated questionnaire from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.ResultsExhaustion but not the cynicism dimension of burnout was associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation after adjustment for depression and other covariates (odds ratio [OR] = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.26–1.72). The association of exhaustion with suicidal ideation was significant in both depressed (OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.14–1.61) and not depressed (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.13–2.76) participants. In exhausted participants, insufficient job control, an unfavorable occupational climate, low educational level, and depression were associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation.ConclusionExhaustion is linked with risk of suicidal ideation in employees not in health care service, regardless of depression status. Exhausted employees, particularly those having poor job resources, should be recognized as an at-risk group

    Crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of neoagarobiose hydrolase from Saccharophagus degradans 2-40

    Many agarolytic bacteria degrade agar polysaccharide into the disaccharide unit neoagarobiose [O-3,6-anhydro-α-L-galactopyranosyl-(1→3)-D-galactose] using various β-agarases. Neoagarobiose hydrolase is an enzyme that acts on the α-1,3 linkage in neoagarobiose to yield D-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose. This activity is essential in both the metabolism of agar by agarolytic bacteria and the production of fermentable sugars from agar biomass for bioenergy production. Neoagarobiose hydrolase from the marine bacterium Saccharophagus degradans 2-40 was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2, with unit-cell parameters a = 129.83, b = 76.81, c = 90.11 Å, β = 101.86°. The crystals diffracted to 1.98 Å resolution and possibly contains two molecules in the asymmetric unit

    Early Results from Posterior Cervical Fusion with a Screw-Rod System

    PURPOSE: We performed 65 cases of posterior fusion surgery for cervical and/or high thoracic lesions using a polyaxial screw-rod system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 486 screws were implanted in 65 patients. RESULTS: Fixation of the screws was carried out over an average of 2.9 spinal segments. Upon evaluation by postoperative CT scans, twelve (2.5%) screws had suboptimal trajectories but two of these revealed radiculopathy in one patient and required screw repositioning. No vascular sequelae resulted. There has been no segmental motion in any of the cases to date. As for other complications, there was one case of dural tearing and two cases of lateral mass fractures. There were no infections or other wound healing problems or hardware failures. No patients had neurological deterioration after surgery. There were statistically significant improvements in the mean Neck Disability Index (NDI) scores and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores in the preoperative and late postoperative follow-up evaluations. Although further studies are required to establish the long-term results of fusion rates and clinical outcomes. CONCLUSION: We cautiously suggest that the posterior polyaxial screw-rod system can be safely used as a primary or additional fusion method in this risky region. The successful and safe use of this method is dependent on a precise preoperative surgical plan and tactics for ensuring safe screw fixation.ope
